John's gonna give a 10 minute solo if you let him
Years ago, John Mayer played a show at Buddy Guyy's "Legends" club in downtown Chicago. Towards the end of the set, they did a duet with dueling solos and Mayer absolutely played Buddy off the stage. You could tell Buddy was seeing red after getting shown up in his own club like that.

The studio version is a lot faster though, they slowed the live version down a lot so the guitar solo would fit the vibe of the song better

John loves Ed. He flew in to be his opener when his original opener canceled. He also played guitar during Eds set to help him out. John didn't try to steal the spotlight or make it about him. Just a friend helping another talented friend.
I believe he wrote the Thinking Out Loud solo as well

I would hardly call that stealing the spotlight. John Mayer is a pro through and through. Like any great player, he knows his place and doesn’t overstep. If anything, I’d say he nailed the “featuring” role. My 2 cents 🤷♂️

I agree 100% with you. Ed Sheeran isn’t a soloist so it makes sense that Mayer would do it. Plus I’d be honored as a musician and recording artist if an incredible guitarist like Mayer played on my song
A good musician plays for the song and the vibe, to truly play tastefully takes time with music god and your instrument , it takes soul. Serpents play well because they are in competition with natural children of god. Real music is played for love and is creative and signature, it is from source from what will not be mentioned as to not devalue what we don’t understand by feigning comprehension, to be creative is to love and share and to be competitive or in competition is to be primal, the devil is you, and rewards you for not identifying with your true self because you have dominion, anyways what I am saying is humans are equals and have infinite carnal knowledge and use it as a weapon against there equals AGAINST THEMSELVES, because of lies and fear. What this short doesn’t show is the other 3 minutes of the song where he’s playing minimally and tastefully, letting ed shine
John rocked this entire song. Three verses and three different movements before that solo in this arrangement. First was in the pocket. Second was experimental. Third, John knew what he wanted to do, and then he finished off with that solo.
There were levels to this performance. This short made me listen to it again and I was vibing with John the whole time. Simply awesome.
John Mayer did the guitar riff in Mac Miller's Small Worlds as well.

@@JohnMayersTop4Fan I'm going to lay down a comment that may or may not be a good point. Gustavo Cerati was an artist that casually walked kind a similar path on guitars owned. Let me explain: Gus started playing Soda Stereo with a Stratocaster, which was robbed of him, then played a Jackson Soloist, similar to the john's one in this video; then went to PRS to own a Custom Multifoil which went on to be its main guitar. Also owned an ES335. On acoustics they differ, cerati using Guild, yamahas or Ovation, and also a Gibson Chet Atkins SST.
Cerati mainly did rhytmics, very treble-y sounds, which i think contrasts with John's preference to warm and blues-y sounds.

I got to see this live and it was phenomenal. They both clearly enjoyed playing together and John did absolutely kill it. Also, dont' forget the tatoos! 🐱 (from Ed to John) and "Cool Guy" with an arrow pointing toward Ed's face (from John) (both sweet)!!!

That guitar solo was amazing but there ain't no way you no way you can steal Ed Sheeran spotlight. Those are two extremely unique artists to perform very well together
He didn’t steal the show. That was planned and rehearsed. Was probably Ed’s idea.
It wasn't even the solo...it was that wicked rhythm he put on all the verses that made the other band members forget Ed was even there. Still the only version of this song worth hearing.
