Why Is The Philippines Scoring Badly in PISA
Maybe we should really have a very comprehensive and irrefutable survey and start asking questions to people in government, teachers and most importantly, the parents and students.
First of all, is it important for those surveyed if the nation scores badly in PISA, with the same results in 2018, even before the pandemic?
If only 50% of the nation believes that it is important that we do NOT score badly, then the other 50% either do not think it is important or do not care at all. Regretfully, even if only 10% of the nation do not think it important or do not care at all, if this 10% is in positions of power and influence like government and media, then the 10% can still overturn the nation. Remember that after 2016, K-12 was stopped and DepEd in 2021 came out with a memo: "No more titles of valedictorian and salutatorian. No more concept of Top 1." And years ago, the general school practice of having a Section A or Star Section or a Top 10 Students was abolished. Why? Because the nation thought it was bad to make students feel bad about themselves when they are not in the Star Section or in the Top 10 or the Valedictorian.
Which then begs other questions, in a survey to be asked to those in government, teachers, and especially the parents and students:
How much do you really want Filipino students to be taught in schools?
In terms of the numerical grading system, what grade do you want Filipino students to have in math, science, and reading? 100%? 90%? 80? Or just the passing grade of 75%?
What this question actually asks is: Is it important for you that students learn, or to just pass and finish school? Or do you just want a diploma to be used to find a job, and it really doesn't matter if the student learned anything or not?
To those in government, it might offer wisdom to know: Why is it important for highly developed countries like Singapore and EU countries that their children are well educated? And how different or the same is their reason compared to the Philippines? If the reason is the same, what are they doing right and what are we doing wrong? If the reason is different, then obviously it doesn't matter.
To the teachers, it should be asked: what do you think will help and make your students do well in school? Better pay for you? Lesser number of students per class? Lesser teaching hours?Air-conditioned classrooms? New curriculum?
Perhaps the government should make a study comparing PISA questionnare results administered to public schools, private schools, and the Philippine Science High School. Include other factors such as teacher salary, number of students per class, number of teaching hours, +/- Aircon, and curriculum. The study results should be instructive.
I honestly don't believe that the Department of Education hasn't made this kind of study yet. And if they have, I'm sure those in power already know what to do but are simply not doing it or saying it.
To the parents and students it should be asked: what is it exactly that you want from schools? What numerical grade average and/or specific subject numerical grade do you want? Or do you honesty just want to just get school done and over with?
Every time the nation is reminded about how poorly Filipino students are doing in schools, the government always says it will work on measures to address the issue, the teachers will blame their salaries and being overworked, the parents and students will blame the education system, and the nation as a whole will blame both the government and the system.
And no one is looking at himself/or herself.
    The government.
Corruption in government resulted to lesser and poor public school buildings, lesser free college education, and better teacher salaries and benefits compared to military personnel and first responders.
    The teachers.
If teachers are paid P100,000 a month, will that be enough? What if the teacher's wife or husband is unemployed and merely stays at home to take care of the kids of which there might be 3 or more? Will P100,000 a month be enough if the kids start going to college at, say, Ateneo or La Salle or UST? Worse, what if a child is pregnant or brings home a pregnant girlfriend? Needless to say, what if an in-law or another unemployed relative is staying with the teacher's family?
Lesser number of students per class? Lesser teaching hours?Air-conditioned classrooms? New curriculum?
Let's wait for the results of the study on this, especially when compared with the Philippine or Manila Science High School.
    To the parents and students.
If you die tomorrow, would you want the people you know - your relatives and friends - to remember you as someone who was intelligent?
Why are news on television shown during breakfast, dinner, and late night today in Tagalog when they used to be in English?
Are there still game shows where high school and college students compete intellectually, rather than basketball?
Do newspaper front page photos acknowledge Filipinos who achieve intellectually rather than in beauty pageants and sports?
The whole nation celebrated every time Pacquiao won and there is a float parade every time a Filipina wins an international beauty pageant. But how did the nation react when - for the first time EVER - a Filipino won THE NOBEL PRIZE?
It is frequently heard - when a classmate or schoolmate says to another who got a high or perfect score on an exam - "Wow! Ang talino mo talaga!" ... and the reply: "Hindi naman. Tsamba lang."
Is this because it is more important to be called "humble" rather than be called "intelligent" and most importantly, not to be regarded as "arrogant?"
Does it really matter to the Filipino nation if the country scored badly in PISA 2022, as the country did in 2018, or is this being discussed only - weather-weather -lang - because it's in the news?

Eh paano kasi elementary palang and kender ang dami nang subjects ang education system nang pililinas ang mali they should focus to the three important subject kasi when you pursue your college education this three course are the most important in some other countries they focus in the three subject math english and science tapos depende na sa anak mo kung saan siya magaling kung sa music art or iba pa he or she can study music once every two months pwede ka papasok sa music kung dyan ka magaling.

ilipat na ng lgu sa mga pacu-coa at paascu accredited schools ang nasa top 20 ng class sa public dahil fast learners na at para matutukan pa ang ibang students sa public at mabawasan ang population sa mga public schools.
