    We do all of those! My mom is in stage 6. Miraculously, she can do 300 piece puzzles. She loves coloring books too. I check every week for appropriate movies. She loves going to movies.

    When my mom was in a dementia care home, they had a baby changing table set up with dolls, doll cloths, baby blankets, bottles, etc. It brought back the familiarity of motherhood. There was also a fake office set up. Your typewriter made me remember it-a typewriter, old-fashioned dial phone, Rolodex, file folders, etc. They had 'proms' where everyone dressed up, had corsages, etc., and a band. It was prom night!

      Wonderful! And yes- the familiarity of being a Mom- caring for children- can be such a comfort! And I love the ideas of adding a Rolodex, dial phone and file folders to the room. Excellent! Actually, at 67 (my age) I STILL prefer hard copy and real folders I can touch. Some on the cloud I lose never to be found again!🤣🤣🤣
      And a band! So good! Music does amazing things for our loved ones.
      Thank you for taking the time to add all these ideas!

    My mom recently moved in with our family. I am a homeschool mom. Mom reads well yet so having her read aloud is fun and helpful. I have an old farmhouse. She has a tiny bedroom, adjacent small livingroom and bathroom. We share kitchen. She loves plants so i filled it with pretty plants for her to care for. She is thrilled seeing new blooms daily, i put all her own furniture and lamps in her area. We had the Amish make her a special quilt for the twin bed we got her as she talked about her bed a lot. We have a prayer journal together . I let her write in it and we pray for people together. I tell her what a wonderful prayer warrior she is. ❤

    Very many thanks for these amazing suggestions, one I would like to add is songs or hymns, they never forget the words to hymns from years ago, the words to songs they used to love too.
    Also, go back in years to funny stories they used to tell about their childhood, it’s amazing just how much they remember from their youth or teen years, my mum used to laugh out loud when recalling events with a friend of hers when they cleaned the boats and ships at Southampton Docks (in Hampshire here in England!! By golly they used to get up to all sorts, thank goodness she’d told me some of those stories when I was a youngster. Anything from when they were young and you’ll see their faces light up. I know they won’t remember it afterwards, but while they’re retelling their tales …they’re alive and so happy! 😊😂
    What about knitting and sewing they enjoyed in years gone by? Just start a simple pattern off…could you do some for me please mum?

    • @Practical_Dementia_Care
      @Practical_Dementia_Care  4 місяці тому +1

      Yes to the old hymns! I used to sing the simple “Jesus Loves Me” when showering Mum and she would nod her head and mouth the words with me. And I love the reminder to tell stories about when they were young, because they absolutely do fill in and add even more details to go along with the stories. Anything that brings a sparkle to their eye is worth trying! Thank you for sharing the sweet stories and suggestions!

    is anyone dealing with a person who has a stubborn attitude?

    • @Practical_Dementia_Care
      @Practical_Dementia_Care  9 днів тому

      @@doreenjohnston7672 Hi Doreen! That can be such a challenge! What are they being stubborn about?
      I remember when Mum would be determined to do something, like go out side when it’s too cold, and I had to try and understand what was going on and look at things from her point of view. Stepping back and figuring out what their unmet need is can be frustrating for everyone, but it helps to find a solution quicker! Mum got outside once when I was in the shower - and it scared me so bad. She was ok but even though she got out , Mum couldn’t figure out how to get back in the house.
      Many times they are stubborn because the part of their brain that is reasonable has already died. Brain failure is so sad!
      Sometimes their vision has changed so much, it makes them introverted almost because the world doesn’t look the same anymore.
      I hope you find a way or can have someone help you figure out what your loved one needs so the stubbornness goes away!
      Blessings on this complicated journey! 🙏🏻💗
      And maybe someone else in the community will have some ideas too .
