Oh my goodness Chusss.... I finally get it. Now i understand the order of the modes 1-7.... like dorian is number 2 bc its the 2nd note of the scale or lydian is number 4 bc its the 4th note of the scale... now it all makes sense...no more plucking arnd the board looking for that 1st position anymore You're a great teacher whether you mean to be or not Thank you from my heart for all you do for us Many blessings your way 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks Mark, modes took a few years for me to fully understand and apply. I like to share what I learned with these videos. I am happy you find it useful, if you have any questions or suggestions just let me know. I always try to enhance those videos as an educational tool.
I really enjoyed playing through this, it was great for my mind ears and fingers. I know I’m repeating the slant of some comments by saying this, but… G Ionian-use sharps, F Dorian use flats, G pryg use flats, G lyd use sharps, G Mixo no sharps or flats, G aeolian use flats and G locrian use flats. I’m sure you know this already, but it helps to understand the related scales to each mode. Great stuff. I’m looking forward to checking out your other videos.
This is an excellent practice tool. The only downside is that the note names on the fret board are wrong most of the time. For anyone trying to learn the theory here, it will be confusing, for example, to try and justify A# as the flattened 3rd in relation to G dorian, phrygian, Aeolian or Locrian. Same goes for the other scale degrees. Otherwise this is brilliant.
This is great I really benefit from practicing to this. Also I think it would be helpful if you would include the chords progression that are being played in each mode . Cheers
Dude thank you so much!!! Literally where i was stuck. I thought the modes moved up like the minor pentatonic aka each mode is just the next step up. No wonder it always sounded like ass when i played with backing tracks. Feels like I just opened Panoras box fkin awesome!!!!🎉😮
G Ionian = G Major/E minor G Dorian = F Major/D minor G Phrygian = Eb Major/C minor G Lydian = D Major/ B minor G Mixolydian = C Major/A minor G Aeolian = Bb Major/G minor G Locrian = Ab Major/F minor
Great thanks good demo on the modes in action. Just an a observation. The Lochrian, being the 7th in the Ab Ionian, so the chord is Gm7b5 which you are playing on guitar. It's quite hard to hear what the bass note is playing (unless it's my gear or ears) but the Gm7b5 is also the substitution chord of Eb9 which without the bass can sound a bit like that rather than a Gm7b5. In which case the chord progression is a 1 5 1 in Ab.
I thought the point of modes was, say if you're in G Ionian(the major scale), the modes of G would be A dorian, B Phrygian, C Lydian, etc, as each note in the G scale becomes a starting/ending point for a new scale(mode). So for G Ionian, if we want a dorian feel, we'd start/resolve on 'A', while playing the same notes of the G major scale. If we wanted an exotic Phyrigian, we'd start/end on B', Lydian on C, etc. That way you can play all these modes without changing the key you're in, cause its all still the same notes of G, just starting and ending on different notes of the G.
Those modes only have flavor in relation to the context. If you play A dorian over a G major loop, it will never sound dorian. Oye Como Va (Santana) is dorian because of the harmony. Am is home base. In Aolian ("normal minor") the D chord should be minor. In this case, it's a D major chord. The one note that makes D a major chord is the 6th note from A. (raised or major 6th) You could play G major over Oye Como Va and never hit a wrong note. It won't, however, make it a song in G major as the home base is very clearly Am. You could, though, use the 7 modes as the seven "boxes" of the major scale. As with the 5 boxes of the minor pentatonic. That can prove helpful to navigate the neck, but it is misleading. To me, modes=flavors. To taste them, treat them as a tonality as was done in this backing track.
Great track thanks. I'd love to know what chords are being played as my ear is not that great yet. I understand certain chords bring out the modal flavour so would love to learn which ones thank you in advance!
is no one going to mention how funky that bassline is for G Phrygian.... Shit knocked me back i was groovin
Chord progressions would be great to see how each mode fits over those chords. Great exercise to jam along to.
Ion Gmaj - Cmaj
Dori Gm7- C7
Phryg Gm7 - Fm7 / Gm - Abmaj
Lyd Gmaj - Amaj
Mixo G7 - Am7
Aeo Gm7 - Cm7
Loc Gm7b5 - Abmaj7

Very helpful!!
Hi ! Good backing track to play with ! Could you give us the chords you used for the different modes please ? Thanks.
Good
Thank You! If i would play in A and use mode scale for A, for example, can I use this same scales on fret, just move on 2 frets?
Right. You can do that with all the modes.
Мне очень нравятся ваши треки , но например мне как новичку интересно какие сочитания нот вы играете ... Не могли бы вы их отмечать во время минуса ?

I'd love to get some of these broken out individually with the scale maps...
Sure. There you go chusss.bandcamp.com/album/jam-tracks-7-modes-g
look at the shapes of each mode, once you see how a shape reflects that mode, its easy to visualize how the entire map is
Were some modes only for minor. Chords

G phygian sound d prhygian to me
G Aeolian is D Phrygian. is that what you mean?
No I do d phrygian on it and sound more intuitive to me
