Great beat. I'm 70 years old. Drummed my whole life. I play this ' Purdie Shuffle. Nearly every time I play. Home at Last, Rosanna, and the Zeppelin beat.
The Purdie shuffle awesome 😊😊bI know every Steely Dan album. every song, this one here the drums out played the song . I guess the emphasis was on the drums. but it was home at last😊
@@sammominks Yes I was! And to the kind of man he is, he came to see ME play! He was doing a clinic in my city at a friend’s drum shop. On the night of the clinic, my daughter was having her first ever band concert, then I had to run to a gig after that. So I couldn’t make the clinic. My buddy told Mr Purdy what a fan I was and why I couldn’t be there, so he had my buddy drive him to see me play for a bit and say hi on the way back to his hotel! I had no idea this was happening and I was shaking like crazy when I saw him there!
Simply awesome to hear this breakdown! I think of the experience and feel Purdie brought to the table, amazing. People bust on Steely Dan about studio vs. live but in the end they created mainstream music using rhythm and jazz with blues and rock blended in to create incredible songs that intrigue us to this day. I love hearing from these master studio musicians.
HOme At Last is one of my very favourite songs. The Purdie Shuffle is iconic groove and Bernard Purdie is one of the greatest musicians in history. Such a pleasure to hear this man speak. Thanks for posting this. Anyone who is serious about the art and craft of drumming must get hip to this man.
I taught this to one of my students and the following week he was at a party at her house, through a mutual friend of her father, and he played it on her drumset !
Heard variations of that story a few times. Each time I hang on every word because it translates to some of the best songs ever produced by SD. Great to see BP still in action at 100%.
I met him at the Liverpool drum festival two weeks ago... Amazing... I later in the week had a one to one drum lesson time with him at Premises Studios, Hackney.... Very kind, we did a mixture of music... Purdie shuffle, rock, blues, Bossa nova... Just fab
@@liamfitzdrums According to Wikipedia, he never lived there - born in Maryland, built his career in NYC, lived in NJ for years, now lives in NC. He took lessons from Leonard Heywood, an old jazz drummer, though, and I'm not sure where Heywood was from.
@@Baribrotzer Ah. Leonard Heywood probably taught him a bit of New Orleans style of playing. Or maybe Bernard met a few New Orleans drummers while touring the US and learned from them.
Fagen, and Becker were notorious for blowing through multiple musicians, and numerous takes in the studio. @stephanleo Hey there! A percussionist is anyone who plays percussion instruments, like the drums. I guess I used that word to hedge my bets in case he's played any other percussion instrument - but his whole career has been on a drum set, so I could've just referred to him as a drummer.
@@MrFchank 💯. MAAAAYYYBE the one time, as an overdub on that one song for a few bars that Quincy was going off about. But people have looked into the timelines of his claims, and they just don’t fit. Plus, we all know what Ringo sounds like. Now in this video, he’s claiming that song was “Steely Dan’s biggest song ever!!” Very, very far from it. He is a great drummer (and decent singer!), with plenty of real accomplishments. I don’t know why he had to tell such crazy stories.
You need to catch the twinkle in his eye when he tells those stories. His eyes always let on to when he’s telling you what went down Vs yanking your chain.
@@Gk2003m Well, there was no “twinkle” in print to catch when he said that in Modern Drummer years ago, or any of the other places that story was printed. I think you are giving him far too much latitude.
I love how they play together, the way their styles punctuate each other

That man is a legend. :)
I met him at the uk drumshow in Liverpool. Amazing drummer and very generous with his time. A true great.
He still looks, sounds and plays outstanding. What a treat
I’ll never forget my chance meeting with Mr Purdie. Such an amazing cat!

What a legend, Simplicity in Perfection thank you Mr Purdie😎🥁💎🥁😎 11:42
I don't have Mr. Purdie's talent, but I do have that shirt....
Dave yeah man !
Legendary. Love his method of teaching. Starts so simple. Then drops the fattest Bass beats Ever created .
Telling a story with DRUMS in such an expert masterful manner. NO G/CHOPS or BLAST BEATING…
Maestro of maestros.
Bravoooooooooooooo

man that snaaare..whant is it?
There would be no Babylon Sisters and Home At Last without the Purdie Shuffle
He REALLY embellishes everything beyond truth.
A 5 star drum clinic
Purdie still does this shuffle the best. Eat your heart out John Bonham.
♥♥♥♥♥

Is the Purdie shuffle what Bonham played on Fool in the Rain?
Bernard looking great… lost some weight✌🏻❤️🙏🏻
what happened to his left eye??
Looks like it might be macular degeneration

if you gotta ask you'll never know
Bernard Purdie is a big bullshitter!! He the one that said Ringo Starr was not the drummer for the beatles!!! Can’t take this bozo seriously!!!

Notice how the greatest, less insecure musicians couldn't care less about gear. A cheap kit and a Privia piano - that's all you need!
That's a great beat but he 100% didn't invent it haha
