    www.mesaboogie....
The MESA/Boogie King Snake is a Limited Edition, custom-covered amplifier, built in tribute to the Original Snakeskin that put MESA and a young Carlos Santana on the map with it's revolutionary and instantly identifiable tone.
MESA Founder Randall Smith and Carlos Santana got together on October 29, 2013 to discuss the history and the inspirations behind the pioneering of all-tube, cascading preamp high-gain that the Mark I made famous. It's a sound, feel, sustain and functionality that Carlos had long been seeking and many guitarists since have found as their ultimate voice for punchy, sparkling clean sounds and unmistakeable, singing Boogie solo tones.
For more information on this hand-signed and numbered, extremely Limited Edition production of the MESA/Boogie King Snake, check out the King Snake page for details:

Boogie is my favorite amp.So fat, so clean, so saturated, that's what I like about them.A boogie and maybe a wah will get you through any gig.You don't know how good (or bad) you sound until you play through one. When Carlos and Randy collaborated it was an epiphany.

"You don't know how good (or bad) you sound until... That is SO true! These amps are unforgiving in that respect.

Been into Mesa Boogie since the beginning. My friends who could afford them would let me jam on theirs! I found my own soul my own music in Mesa Boogie's have never left! I currently own the road king version 2 with Road King cabinets, and the amazingly beautiful Electra Dyne, 2x12. I use two different speakers in my 2x12, the C 90 and the V 30. When I roll off the cleans brighten up, when I roll on it gets nasty! I met Randall many years ago and hung out with him and his race cars. Amazing time! Got to hang out with him at NAMM as well. Can't wait to hear this new beast! I'll probably have to get one. As for Mr Santana? I love you like most in the world! Combination made in heaven, sonic heaven! Peace, DVB

I am a lucky owner of a King Snake which I got at Station Music near Munich....I drove over there from Munich, it was the last one in Germany. I drove two hours to the shop and it took me literally 5 min buying it. Been using Boogie since I bought my fist one Mk Iic in hardwood in 1989....the King Snake is my go to amp each and every day in the studio.....

Thank you Carlos... I may have sometimes questioned why you don't expand your playing but your spirituality and purity I always respected. What you said about John M. was really a showcase of humility but I have to say he may be up on Coltrane theory but you are the one with Coltrane's feeling, intuition and soul.

Of course - how could it not, he is Santana! He doesn't sound as good with the Dumbles & Hemp cone speakers though; on the album when he introduced them (was that Shaman?) I was surprised to read that none of my favorite songs featured the new amps & speakers but all the others did, which I thought was interesting. I guess I can understand him wanting to try new things but really he had such wonderful tones at his finger tips already, why mess with it.

Two of my favorite things from the hippie era: Santana and the MkI.
I usually don't go in for corporate self-hype, but this is really interesting.
I would love to hear them talk about the original Boogie built into a Princeton cab. And just the days of hangin out in SF in those days.

    1) I totally appreciate this interview. Love, Devotion, and Surrender is one of my top favorites of all time. I feel that period of time became lost when what was called Fusion became smooth jazz....
    2) I was looking at the Mark V head when I ran across the amp, and immediately thought "Well, obviously I need this amp for Open G slide." Then I saw the video with Carlos and Randall, and that Carlos signs the amp. Forget Blue Stripe, Green Stripes- Carlos signs it.
    3) I had a Nomad 100 4x10 combo that had this cab design, and the top lifted completely out of the sides. I really do prefer the tolex over the joints for support like a skin. Having said that, this piece is probably 60 lbs lighter.
    4) If this amp were not an amp, but a scene in a movie, it would be this.... [don't ban me!] The Big Lebowski - I'm just gonna go find a cash machine.

I saw Santana in 1977, when he was using a Yamaha SG2000 & Boogie Mk1. At the back of the stadium, about 50 metres behind the F.O.H desk was the men's room (old Sydney Showground) at ground level of the stand. When Carlos hit the solo level he deafened all of us inside the men's room & everyone had to decide whether to try to pee no handed & cover our ears or go deaf and control the pee! The concrete room made the sound worse. It seemed that the P.A. stacks were aimed right at the men's room... yeah, a Boogie 'projects' all right.

Fantastic discussion about a really important period in the history of music gear. I’ll never forget reading Carlos’ interview in Guitar Player magazine where he talked about this new amp he was using. He said he could make it make scream in a hotel room. Well, that sounded good to me! Soon after that I was talking on the phone to the people at Mesa (probably Randall himself) ordering my own Boogie. Eventually it arrived - I don’t remember how long it took. I think they had to ship it air freight for some reason. Good times.

Great amps, and based off the great Mark I, which is still one of the finest amps ever produced. One of the best things about Boogies is the headroom, great tone at all volumes. You can really save your ears with one of these. Are they expensive? Yes. But think of all the crappy amps you won't have to buy, all the repair bills. I played the hell out of my Boogie. I changed the tubes every three years. They are so well made, so efficient, just wonderful pieces of engineering genius.

@@patrickromero5365 Took out the "dated" E V speaker? I just built a 12 pedal pedalboard during covid so really haven't got a chance to really play out with it. Yes very heavy especially with a road case and the 12 L speaker. But I wouldn't change anything on this amp. It's actually heavier than my pro tube Twin but that's the case making it heavier. I'm pretty satisfied with my current whole guitar setup. Strat, Paul, board into Boogie. As a kid had the usual pictures on bedroom wall. Now I own and play same stuff that was on wall. Rest of equipment; bass, keys, drums, P A is all junk ( not very expensive kinda equipment). But it's mine and even if it was free always needs so TLC.

You should get one before they are all gone! Well worth the price in every way. I also have a 97 Mark I reissue with a Great Plains Audio 417-8H (basically an Altec) speaker. The KS has a few refinements over the Mark I. Overall string balance is improved. Very good taper on the master volume. It does not explode with volume when you change from Input 2 to Input 1. The speaker they put in there is very good and works well with the amp. Two amp voicings (Tweed and Black Face), 10 watt mode. Tremendous feel to the amp. I have a Fryette Power Station for use with these amps.

+wasn't me Just to chime in here.... When you talk about Mesa Money I know a lot of us musicians face the reality of wanting what we can't afford but, If you look around many places like Reverb.com or Guitar Center and other places you can find some of the old Boogie Combos for a very reasonable money. If you get these older combo amps they are built like tanks and they still just sound awesome. I have a Mark III combo and its 30 years old, sounds like a dream and cost me $800. Look around, the deals are there and it is worth the money!!! They make AMAZING amps! One last thing, how Carlos sounds is mostly in his hands and his head. The amp is great at letting that out !

    • @kewlbns69

      Michael Watkins
i wouldn't expect to find a "deal" at guitar center but the local music shops and pawns are great places to look for cheap gear. and not for nothing but $800 is still a pretty substantial chunk of change. you might laugh but i got pretty close to santana tone w/ a pod nut before i had to sell it.

+Kewl Beans Funny thing is I got it at guitar center, it was one of the lowest prices and its in amazing shape. One thing to remember is if your getting the tone your after then stay where you are ! No matter if its a pedal, amp or combo of both, the hunt for the king tone is a life long run. Enjoy !!!

    • @mesaboogie
      @mesaboogie  10 років тому +1

Hi ***** - The "snakeskin" used then was a reconstituted leather, very similar to what is used now on the King Snake. Appreciate the concern and Mesa does not utilize materials of the kind that would concern anyone. ;)

    • @jonsmith4669
      @jonsmith4669 10 років тому

Thanks,I'm not particulary keen on snakes but I know pythons are a protected species and they are just doing their thing, whereas snakes in human form are not.
When snakeskin real or not was used on the original amp, that was in the days before people became more enlightened about wild animal welfare.
I would be happier if some poor creatures skin didn't end up simply for decoration for an amp when there is a perfectly good looking hard wearing synthetic alternative and it would be a lot cheaper and bring the cost to you and the customer down.
Leather for a practical use like shoes is more acceptable ,but still difficult for me personally.

Here's what I find strange. Companies come out with a great product, but they only have it in limited quantity. Then they take it "off the menu".... WHY? Is it that they only want to sell the other models that suck? I never figured that one out. It's like Gibson only selling 250 1959 Les Pauls. Heck, if that's the Holy Grail and people always want to buy it, then make it a standard model and make em whenever someone wants one. the point of Mesa Boogie were the old original models and variations and they should ALWAYS be available, even if it's on a special order basis.
I had one of my favorite Chinese restaurants, and they had one of their Chef Signature dishes and then they took it off the menu. It's like WHAT? That's the dish I want, if you don't make it, then I have to find another favorite restaurant to go to.
Either keep on making them or add the circuitry that these have in the other Mark models. Also, just make them in the standard cabinet finish and offer the snake skin through the custom shop. :-)

+Oneness100 I can answer that. First, the special models don't fit into standard production. They shortcut the systems in place in order to make them happen. Parts inventory and manufacturing have to do makeshift arrangements that need to be undone for the next big idea to have room for them. Next, the beancounters run most companies that stay in business. They constantly analyze return on investment and that's a measurement of profit divided by time and resources invested--and cheap junk from china wins every time with the beancounters, hence you see Guitar Center dropping Mesa and selling more cheap amps. Same reason all large stores like Sears and Pennys went from offering a full range of household items for your convenience, to nothing but cheap soft goods from third world countries. Maximize return on dollars invested. In the end beancounters win and we lose.

Taterly Saladman They can make these a standard model is my point. I know all about the costs and how beancounters analyze a business. Mesa has never really gone the way of off shore mfg have they? For them, it's just making a different model with different specs and charging what they need to charge to make the profit margin they need to make.

Hi +Taterly Saladman - Some of what you have said here is accurate but a couple of things are not... Mesa dropped Guitar Center... Small but important distinction. :) Regarding bean counters, any company has to determine the profitability of what it makes and sells and we are fortunate to be able to continue to hand build everything we make in Petaluma, California to exceptional high standards, just as we have since moving to the same building since 1980. We are also extremely proud to offer some of the most versatile and innovative products for vacuum tube guitar and bass amplification at relatively affordable prices compared to 'the new boutique builders' with higher prices and less versatility. We have stayed, and will continue to stay true to the same values under which the company was founded and our track record shows just how much control the bean counters have over Mesa's product offerings. In the edn, Randy Smith decides - not the accounting department. Thanks for the thoughtful comment and your interest! :D

Hi +Oneness100 - You are indeed correct that Mesa can easily build a lessor cost version of this model. At some point, that may take place. In the meantime, this was a collaboration with one of the great guitarists of this century and one with incredible history with the company who approached Mesa to do a specific re-issue of an amp he loved after having a 'return spiritual experience' with the amp that started it all. So we decided to stay true to that original vision while adding just a touch of features and circuitry that exposed itself 45 years later while researching the project. It's a great tribute to the amp that started it all and one of the key players of the time that helped expose that new voice and innovation in cascading high gain that Randy pioneered! Thanks for your interest and enthusiasm and the kind words. Stay tuned! :D

MESA/Boogie What I find kinda funny/sad at the same time is when a company does something that's special and that's their inherent history and signature sound, some stray away from it, when they shoud be continuing that special something they created that made them what they are. It's like going to your favorite restaurant and they take a great dish off the menu. WTF? I never understood that. If that dish is what helped create the restaurant to be great, then keep the dish on the menu..... :-)
Same thing with amps. Keep that original sound intact. I can understand making other models to add to the product line, but you have to keep that famous sound as part of the product line.
Keep up the great work, you guys make great products.
