    The knowledge in this video is invaluable to anyone focusing on drawing with pen and ink. I've watched it a few times now. I would love to see this topic redone with a bit better video as it is fading in and out quite a bit.

    I really appreciate how dense these teaching videos are, it makes it so easy to learn from them! Hatching is a new technique for me so I'm maybe a step previous to this video... How do I position my drawing arm? Is my elbow resting on the table? Or is it my forearm that's resting on the table? What angle should the drawing board be? Are there basic exercises to building up to cross hatching and where would I find them? I'm registered for the upcoming workshop and really looking forward to it! But I might need some preliminaries first. Thank you!

    Hi Mark. Are you using a ligher or watered down ink possibly? With Parker Quink black or Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black after just a layer or two it's pretty saturated and not capturing the subtleties?

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  7 місяців тому

      I’m actually using Noodler’s Lexington grey here, which can appear black, but has a transparency that makes it easier to gradually build up values.

    This is amazing! You sure make it look easy!😆 How do get these super faint lines? I use a Preppy 0.2mm and yet even with light pressure, things come out bold with little variety.

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  Рік тому

      Thanks! I'm not using anything superfine here, just a TWSB eco EF. Platinum Peppies EFs do tend to write a little wider...

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  5 місяців тому

      My pleasure! It’s been awhile since this video was made, but I believe I was using Noodler’s Grey here, which is a transparent ink that can look black when you slow down, but generally puts down a softer lighter line that makes the gradual build up of value easier.

    On contour hatching I have a question. Are you basically hatching at perpendicular to the “Normal” of the surface ? In essence if you are at the north pole (or south) your normal would be up/down so you contour horizontally (with an arc). As you go towards the centre the normal would be pointing more towards E or W so you hatch vertically ? From a physics/light perspective this would make sense because the normal would be direct bounce back light and scattered light would come off at 90 degrees to incident light. Since the surface is round, your normal perpendicular has to be round to. Cross hatchingis just shifted by 15 degrees to darken/interfere with the last hatching ?

    • @mkompan
      @mkompan  Рік тому +2

      If I understood your question, hatching can be done as you describe, (using longitudes and latitudes), but any angle of hatch will work so long as it consistently follows the forms. The same way one can draw a line on a sphere in any direction, one can choose an initial angle of hatch based on any number of factors (one of which is simply what is most comfortable for your hand).
      I’m not following your explanation of light, but really the prime consideration here is linear perspective,with foreshortened angles appearing either more horizontal or vertical on receding planes.

    • @pentachronic
      @pentachronic Рік тому

      @@mkompan Perfect answer. Thanks for your feedback. Yes I realised after typing that longitudes and latitudes would be a better description. The other thing I have learned from another YT video is to follow the form (effectively project a cartesian grid [like an overhead projector with a grid] onto the form). The grid being rotated at whatever angle you like from what you are saying. Obviously projecting a cartesian grid on a perspective form will distort in perspective too, hence following that persective foreshortening too. Your rules on hatching angles would need to be applied to but now with this “projection mapping” taken into account. I’m sure there are lots of subtleties to learn later on like line weights, spacing and broken lines but for now this will get me down the right path I believe. Hopefully this approach will give me effective form and value from line.
