I've been growing roses for 50 years, but I learned a lot from this video. I'll review it next month before I prune for next season.
Please keep making these! You are a great teacher!!! I'm excited to understand what I'm doing and WHY I'm doing it in my garden!
Thank you Angi! I almost missed your post, i did not get a notice of it. Posts like yours keep my spirits up. :)
Well, I hope you'll keep posting, because I've already gobbled up all of the ones out here and then run out to my yard to try out my knew "skills"! :)
Hello, I have a question.. I've heard when pruning roses to count 5 leaves down? (Not 3) is this correct? Because at no point in your videos I heard that rule..so I'm not sure if that is correct? Can u please advise if that's an actual rule of thumb? Thank you. Love your videos! :)
Hi Lluvia, sorry for such a late reply. Working alot! You are correct that in my videos I do not talk about the 5 leaflet "rule". For people who enjoy showing their roses, pruning down to the second leaflet with 5 leaves is key for encouraging tall, straight stems for the show. For most people pruning to an outward facing node on the stem you're cutting is what I show in the videos. Sometimes this means I cut farther down than the second 5 leaf leaflet. There are so many "rules" for roses that I like to show how you can get beautiful, well blooming roses with a good balance of stems.
