@robinrobin3022 because they are fighting in an alliance and they don't want to compete against their own alliance members and split their vote share, india alliance put up unified candidates to face the bjp, so if congress was to fight where tmc is fighting as well for example, then they would naturally cannibalize the votes of their own alliance members or thr other way around, and this split would ensure that the bjp candidate wins.
