too useful for a t4 owner!!! thanks a lot! I've spent lifes searching on blogs etc and in ten min. you solved the problem. blessings!! 😂
Thank you for watching!
I just did that job without removing the wheel. Access for drilling is clear and easy. Removed the barrel in the time it took to watch this video. I appreciate the video however. Thanks
Some people are better / smarter than others.... thanks for watching!
Or lazier lol.
Damn bud you are one of the most detailed mechanic on yt. Thanks for all your previous help, I'm proud to be a patreon supporter and I encourage all your subs to try to donate what they can. You've been a big help to me on my last few projects and I do appreciate your time. Thanks again thomas.
+Chris Watson Thank you Chris!
Thomas EXOVCDS no problem bud!
Thomas, Many thanks for this video. Helpful for my 95 EVC. While in Yellowstone last year, I could not turn the key so I ended up removing the ignition switch and starting the van with the screwdriver the remainder of the trip back to Halifax. So I needed to fix this summer. I was able to to drill by removing the steering wheel and stalk only. I used a paper template to find the exact spot and bought a new 6" inch 3/16 drill bit to access and make it easier to drill without a wandering dull bit.
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for this great tutorial. I was stopped (Steering wheel was blocked), now I can drive. I've just make the small hole without dismounting, as you explained.
Grand merci!
Thank you for watching!
I see your sitting down on the job again. My dad was an auto mechanic for years. He said "never hang heavy objects on a key ring because it would wear out the ignition switch". I don't know if that's true but I never hang anything on my keys. Knowing where to drill is a huge tip! Thanks for showing us that one.
I've heard the same saying! This one was 20+ years old... lasted long enough (heavy chain or not). =)
Thanks I had intermittent turning over on my T4 never failed to start but had to turn key several times until it started. Ordered the ingnition from just Campers and did the job today. Perfect starting better than ever now and I could see the wear on the old ignition switch plastic where the end of the key goes in. Mine is a 1996 T4 diesel 2.4 AAD. Thanks for your guidance much appreciated.
Thank you for watching!
99Rialta - VW front body with Winnebago coach, and no one will work on them. This video is priceless, got my sloppy keyset outta there! Sharing if you dont minds.
Thank you for watching.
Sharing is good... every time someone watches my video, I get a few cents.
@@EXOVCDS I'll rewatch it an you can get more cents 8>) Say, did all disconnects, ignition housing still wont budge. Key in start, lower bolt out, lock washer/spring off, seems something is holding it. Dont want to smack alum to badly, is there any other pin or lock?
If the steering is locked or does not unlock, you can't slide the housing up.
Put the steering wheel back on the shaft and check if you can turn it.
UA-cam keeps track of video watch per IP address. You may see ads, but I don't get compensated for multiple views from same IP.
Guess just WD and some persistent tapping will do it.
If steering is locked, no.
Is steering locked?
Drill a small hole in the housing, remove the key cylinder... then you can use a screwdriver to unlock the steering and pull the housing up.
The more info I have (when replying to me) the better I can help.
Well dang, the switch works with a screwdriver and the key lock cylinder ain't broke, guess I'll start with the switch. Like another commenter, I too was able to drill it without removal from steering column. Thank you!!!
What's the reason for investigating the switch?
No crank or crank no start?
@@EXOVCDS intermittent crank. If I pushed upwards on the key cylinder, sometimes it would crank. Or when I pushed inwards on the wire connection to the switch, I think that helped it crank.
@quartamile yeah, start with the switch. Most likely, it's at fault.
Thomas mentions that this can probably be done in the car and I just did it. Just remove the steering column trim and the lower dash kick (see ignition switch video) and then, as with Thomas, I used the replacement lock cylinder to verify the point to drill the hole. I started with a tiny drill, planning to move up in size if my location was too far off. But it's any easy spring to release, large target area. Really, there's no apparent downside to drilling with everything in place. Just go slow clear the shavings and use your sense to know when you are through.
Make sure you have popped off the column lock rod and be aware that you may need to move that lever as you pull the cylinder out. I put my key in and turned it before pulling and that was a mistake as it got caught inside on the column locking mechanism. Moving the lever that the cable was connected to got me out of that "jam".
Ok, the hardest part was pulling the security sensor ring off the old cylinder so I could take it to my bench and knock out the roll pin. I used thin metal shims all around the ears of the ring to release all the locking plastic tabs. OR, you might try getting out the pin with the thing in place, as mine was not very hard to get out. IF so, I'd use pliers with a tiny nail as a drift to squeeze it out.
Really, really easy. I can't believe that anybody pulls the wheel or the column to do this on an EV. No apparent advantage at all. The drill fits right in there without pulling anything but the plastic cover.
Furthermore, as Thomas and somebody else mentioned, you can readily knock out that little roll pin in the mechanism of the new lock cylinder to remove the linkage piece which is all that is typically wrong. Swap that good piece into your old cylinder and you are good to go with same key as always. I bought an OEM cylinder ($120 cheapest) to get that piece and be more assured that it would swap but you also might find one in a junkyard.
Wow... quite the post! Thank you for sharing your DIY experience!!!
Send me a message with your mailing address and I'll send you some of my channel stickers as a thank you! If you want some... fkh161@fkh161.ca
Oh man this video is a blessing for sure. Was expecting such a good video and gives me exactly what I needed thanks so much bro 😊
Thank you for watching!
That's quite a faff! This is one of those things I've never had to do, but will be super-good to know when the time comes! Kudos, Thomas!
I like how VW kept it the same location on all lock housings (older models with this setup). =)
Thanks Thomas always learn watching you work!
Thank you Mike... right back at you!
Many thanks Thomas, you got my 92 camper going again.
Nice to hear, thank you for watching!
Clear instruction, may change mine to match the door locks, thank you.
Thank you for watching!
good job buddy love the way the steering wheel pops of so easy compared to most Chevys
Yeah... even when they have airbags, it's still fairly easy.
These videos are keeping these junky turds on the road! Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Dang, the switch link on description doesn't work. I have a couple 3-pronged security screws on top of the lock cylinder, are those what need to come out? They're super tight! Can't get em yet, unsure what tool to use with the security but, super tight space. Thank you!!!!
Not sure which ones you mean... at what part of my videobare they visible? 7:22 is the only security screw that I am aware of.
How do you compress the spring enough to get the lock washer back on? I can't imagine wiggling it with channel locks will work.
It's been a while since I did one, but if I recall correctly, I position the spring, put the washer on top and then I smack the washer with a deep socket, using a hammer... till the adjustment (according to service info) is correct.
Great video! But now I can't get the steering wheel back on...there just isn't enough thread left to get the nut on there. What am I missing!?
The threaded shaft needs to be pulled up more or the lock housing needs to be lowered more. Have a look at the lock housing securing bolt... if it is positioned high in the slotted hole, then lower it. If you remove the switch assembly, you can position the steering wheel on the shaft and attach the nut, then grab the steering wheel and pull up on it... if the spring & lock washer are not compressed enough, that can also cause lack of threads to show when the steering wheel is on.
So....keyed housing is on, ignition switch hooke dup and column lock cable in place. Now when trying to get the spring/lock washer on the steering column now moves in and out, and I've lost 2 little ball from the collar bearing when I pull it up, I've stopped . . . . Whats happening? Take it back apart?
Yeah, you'll have e to pull it apart again. Not sure why those little ball bearings fell out. Part number 3 in the following link is a soft plastic collar / sleeve that the bearing race rests against. I've pulled many ignition lock housings off of steering columns... have never had bearings fall out. Wish i could tell you why it happened.

The cylinder seized up on my EuroVan a while back. Had it replaced. At least I won't be dealing with an immobilizer after my TDi swap...
+Jack Rosenfeld Are you documenting / recording any of the swap?
Yes
It will work on T4 99r ? I don't have this black cover next to key. I have immo. Maybe it doesn't matter but i'm afraid to destroy part
Imm antenna / ring comes off with the cylinder... you need a thin stiff piece of wire to release the lock cylinder... like in this video at 10:14 (Golf, Jetta with immo).

Hello,
several links no longer work.
Thank you for everything.
Yes, I removed them due to copyright reasons. You can find that information in your service manual.
If you do not have a service manual... read the rest of the info in the video description.
@@EXOVCDS Hello, thanks. Just question, you have a email ? Thanks.
Holy crap! Surely the engineers could have put a hole in there to release the lock cylinder. That's some good information to know Thomas and do you remember what size drill bit that was. 😀👍
Missed this one... sorry. Good question and info that would be useful! =)
4 to 5mm (+/- 3/16") should be fine.
No problem Thomas! I appreciate the info...
Still a great video.
Thank you for watching... if you need the pdf, click the fkh161 link in the description and then click on "tool request" to send me a message.
I would have thought by now that the steering shaft would have say two flutes filled so the wheel can only go on in one place.
Nice lock drilling, handy when you have good diagrams :-D
One-way only fit would be nice!
My van still runs but wanted to change the barrel to match my other new locks. Does this same method apply?
As you can see in the video, I removed the key cylinder / barrel. If that's what you want to / need to do, then yes... do what I did. "Coding" the cylinder / barrel to match the other locks may need to be done by a locksmith.
@@EXOVCDS thanks for the reply. My van is the 1.9tdi abl engine it doesn't have the ecu to code the key into. I thought it must be just a simple barrel exchange maybe?
@@Adam-gq7gk I did not mean ECU / immobilizer coding. The "tumblers" inside the key cylinder need to be coded to match the outer doors. Door cylinders are easy to take apart / to change the tumblers for different keys. The ignition key barrel is not easy to take apart. If you have a new barrel with new keys, then you need to code / match the door cylinders to those keys... if you have already done that, I did not know.
@@EXOVCDS yeah all other door locks are changed to a new set of keys just have the barrel to change then all locks would be the same(the new keys would match all locks) just the barrel left to change
@@Adam-gq7gk Yup, then follow the video and insert the new barrel.
Hi Thomas, Thanks for the helpful video's. My barrel has gone in my 2000 reg T4, I have replaced the ignition switch, I get lights on the dash but no ignition spark. Am I correct in saying that once I have drilled the hole and released the ignition barrel that the steering lock housing is useless and needs also to be replaced? Seems a bit pointless to have to remove the whole assembly and get the broken barrel out if I need to replace the whole steering lock housing in the process. (according to the haynes it suggests once drilled, it's scrap!) Can I just drill a small hole and replace the barrel with no problem to the housing and steering lock mechanism? Thanks for any answers, I really can't afford to pay for a mechanic/garage to solve this, hopefully simple issue of a new barrel.
Drilling a small hole allows the barrel to be released from the lock housing. The lock housing does not need to be replaced. Here's a DIY for a 2000 EV.

Hi mate.. Did you know speedometer sensor G22 location in gearbox JP JC7- 09B 321 107.. Thanks
Newer VW's & Audi's use the front left ABS speed sensor as an input for vehicle speed. Not sure if your 09B transmission has a G22 sensor. I'm still at work... I'll check the service info when I get home tonight. What year/model vehicle?
09B transmission (which I think this JP JC7- 09B 321 107 is) does not list a G22 sensor:
fkh161.ca/VW/A4/09BSensors.pdf
What is the actual issue? What fault codes are in the ECM & TCM (if any)?
Thomas EXOVCDS is a sharan AUY 1.9 tdi PD 2005 automatic.. That give me error sensor G22 speedometer.. I try to find in my gearbox but nothing..
Pontes Mocho I'll look for information after work tonight.
Thomas EXOVCDS OK.. Thanks mate

Great little video...
Thank you!
nice job mate
It really is as simple as that!
Thomas EXOVCDS sorted!!!!
How many miles, or years, before this shows up on some cars?
This one was original... 1995 (I think) some 200k+ km's
Can probably fail under 100k km's and under 10 years.
No real "average" lifespan.
Just failed on my 2000, 157 000 km, I think it as already been replaced once by a previous owner
:-))) good job, Thomas (you know I AM the expert :-P)
Thank you... Meister Sunshine!
Not so easy, but I did same job after watching you! Now my van (2.4 aab L) works again! did you worked even on vacuum pum? Thanks for sharing!
Ciao e grazie ancora! ;)
Thank you for watching... good to hear that things worked out for you! I have replaced vacuum pumps before, yes. I have not repaired a vacuum pump with a repair kit (on a Eurovan), but I have installed repair kits on old Golf / Jetta vacuum pumps (70's/80's).

Is there any video? Thanks again!
A small phillips screwdriver... I made a stubby / short one (I showed it in the video).

You would think VW would put a small mark on that housing so you know where to drill. .. but no no . they most likely want to sell that whole assembly.
You don't want to make it too easy for thief's. =)
I have a question I want to buy a jetta it a 2000 vw jetta 2.0 4cylinder and the only trouble that it has leaks transmission fluid is that hard to fix and how do I fix it?
Depends on the leak... could be a couple hundred dollars or a couple thousand dollars. Take the car to a transmission shop for an estimate before you buy it (if the owner will let you).
Thomas EXOVCDS ok we're should I look is there any seals that go bad 50/50 I hope the owner lets me to take it to a transmission shop
Thomas EXOVCDS he reply and sad it leaking from top around trans cooler ,is that good or bad? Or what is that
Could just be cooler seals... don't know, can't see. Have a pre-purchase inspection done at a shop (30min to 1hr) and they can give you an assessment of the car (buy or don't buy). If the owner will not allow you to take it to a shop or if he doesn't take it to the shop that you want it to go to... he's hiding something. Don't buy!
Thomas EXOVCDS I understand and I will keep you updated if I do get it
Succinct. Well done.

No... a tow truck would be quicker.
