The rebels had only a dozen spies on the capital of the Galactic Empire, which also houses the headquarters of a number of important agencies and organisations, and has a population of over one trillion? Damn, the Imperial Security Bureau must be really good at their jobs.
ISB was likely a pretty large organization also makes sense to keep a very close eye on your capital

This is why Palpatine keeps it an absolute secret that he is a Sith and is able to use the Force. It means people are always going to try assassination plots against him that are never gonna work, because he has the fuckin Force, which they don't take account of.

I guess he saw how out of their league the rebels were and no longer supported them, but still supporter the same cause they did.
I’m wondering if he deliberately had some of his worst guards seeing as they would’ve all died in the explosion, to minimise waste but it would also somewhat explain being able to defeat them.

Not only did Palpatine eliminate a huge rebel threat and discredited them serverly. He also strengthend his rule by manipulating the people's resolve so that they thought they needed him as a leader to face this "threat" . All the while distracting them from any discontent they might be feeling about his ruling.
A true evil mastermind any sith should respect.

This was actually an awesome story. I like how you do canonical videos as well as Extended Universe lore. I don’t entirely agree with Disney’s decisions on what is and isn’t EU material but seeing Canon vids are actually a nice touch. As much as I am a fan of the EU, more vids on canon content does carry significant merit.

They seem to do better in canon comics and books than the flims. I don’t accept the flims in my canon but I can live with the comics and see legends and canon as alternate verses
I have a feeling the artists/storytellers of these comics have more creative freedom.
But at the same time there is an overarching plot. Unlike Legends which was largely a hodgepodge and massive power creep.
I can just imagine emperor palpatine saying out loud "OH I HOPE NO REBELS COME OUT AND SHOOT ME IN THE BACK BECAUSE IM COMEPLETELY DEFENSELESS"

I just love it when good guys get outsmarted by villains who are smarter than them and exploit their naïveté.
That must have been crazy in the debacle/chaos of it all. Poor Ray, but not only did his mission go to crap, he learned that Palpatine was a Sith Lord. I wonder how he, Ray, would’ve reacted if he learned the entire history of the Sith and discovered Palpatine’s name was Darth Sidious.

It was more he was just bloody smart, he pretty much made the future right up until the end, where his plan to make Luke his new apprentice went completely wrong in the most unpredictable way.

To be fair, he did come from a planet where it was common for their Kings and Queens to have dozens of body doubles at the ready 24/7.

The movies are filtered through a Rebel lens which paints the Imperials as Judge Dredd fanatics while the alliance is always presented as “heroes fighting for freedom and apple pie” despite their terrorist acts

Risking all their available assets/agents in Coruscant for a huge gamble of successfully killing Palpatine was just so stupid, even if they didn't know that he was a Sith that was impossible to kill for normal men. You have the valuable resources to gather intel in the innermost territory of your enemy, assets that probably took time to just be established there, and you are just gonna gamble all those lives away based on one haphazard on the spot decision of one man? I'll certainly take the chance of approving the assassination of the biggest enemy if there's an opportunity, but sending all those valuable agents just on a whim? It's so dumb I can't immerse myself with the story.
The Rebel Alliance did view the republic through rose colored glasses (at best) and was led by greedy politicians who got butthurt over Palpatine taking away their private slush funds for public use

Fact free: why does the rebel alliance need a base on a planet ?
vigicraft_omc_ probably because it would be harder for the Imperials to find a base on a planet, considering there are hundreds of planets in the galaxy, since the only areas of space that people would go to were areas near planets or hyper space routes, anything else and it would be suicide since they could easily get lost in space, also if their base was in space, they’ll be easy targets since the imperials will see a floating station around the planets, also it’s less work if your base is on a planet since you don’t have to worry about supplying oxygen to the base or anything else that would be necessary for survival in space
Faulty Blue yeah but they couldn't use home one as a base or other moncalamary ship cause it would be more easy for them and if the empire find them all they have To do is to jump to a other system, having a planet makes things more harder for the rebel and their sitting duck on the surface of the planet and a evacuation takes a while don't get me wrong and would cause a lot death look at hoth and atolon. Also supplying air isn't that hard for the rebel (i mean they have a fleet)
vigicraft_omc_ having a planetary base would mean having a central command and the means to expand the planetary base if needed. If rebel HQ was a mobile fleet, rebel cells who lose contact wouldn't know where to go, and they'd be dead in space, so the planetary HQ also doubles as a fallback point.
Also, base shields are particularly powerful against orbital bombardment and force invading enemies to the ground where the rebels can take them on easier (since the rebels know their territory and have the appropriate equipment).

See this is the sort of story I'd love to see Lucasfilm or Electronic Arts tackle in either a film or game, that whole idea of Imperial propaganda painting the Rebel Alliance as terrorists and Palpatine still finding ways to manipulate both sides of the war to further his goals.

palpatines biggest brain moment of all time, killing all the prisoners who were going to die anyway and prevent them from being rescued, uncovering and killing all the agents on corouscant, framing it as an act of rebel terrorism and using it for propoganda, and breaking a rebel spy into fighting the rebellion, all in 1 action
