  • Ellen: You're not reassuring me doctor.
Dr. William Beckham: I can't reassure you. This idea you have, that there's a way to be safe, it's childish and cowardly. It stops you from experiencing anything, including anything good.
Ellen: You don't think I feel bad enough already? I know I'm messed up, but you're supposed to teach me how not to be.
Dr. William Beckham: You know how. Stop waiting for life to be easy. Stop hoping for somebody to save you. You don't need another person lying to you. Things don't all add up, but you are resilient. Face some hard facts and you could have an incredible life.
Ellen: That's your pearl of wisdom? Grow a pair?
Dr. William Beckham: That's a more concise way of putting it. Yeah.

I thought the same thing, dude has lost his wife, unborn child, best friend... dude has seriously met a lot of heartache in his life, yet he is unbelievably well conditioned in a lot of ways, or at least appears that way...I mean acting is his job.

I think if it's about sadness, keanu is the expert one. He had to go through multiple tragedies and shit but still came up on top, while most celebs would already be addicted to something at that point. Not to say others are pathetic but Keanu really did grow a pair to put it simply.

He was very genuine here like he was telling from his life experience. That is a very strong point. We always want people to help us when we are in trouble. But the best person to help us is ourselves.

And yet what do we do when something goes wrong? Are you going to mend your own broken leg or entrust it with the hands of others? Self stoicism only works for those who have the privilege to live independently

And what happens when someone comes to find that there isn't always another person available to them with the ability or know-how to care for their catastrophes? This is a circular argument on both fronts, and they need to be taken in tandem.
It's great to be able to rely on others when they're available to and capable of helping you -- but that is *never* a given. Life is fair to no one, and placing your own wellbeing in the hands of anyone else is always going to be a greater gamble than learning how to own and rely on yourself.
External reliance only works for those who have the privilege of living with others who care or are paid to care for their wellbeing.

this scene. this scene is my life. ive been anorexic for 2 years, and i know that what my therapist says is true, but i still wait for something to "save" me from myself. i know im the only one who can help myself but i cant. i only feel safe when i stay away from things that can hurt me (going out, socializing, falling in love, getting a hobby) and try to be in control by starving myself. controlling what goes in my mouth gives me a false feeling of safety and relief. ive tried to recover many times, and every time i relapse i feel like im coming home after a long and exhausting day at work, but 100 times more intensely. i know it will kill me one day and i dont want to die. i just want to be safe. it also has to do with the fact that i refuse to grow up. during my childhood i had two loving parents, unconditional love and attention, i was safe and small and clueless and everything was fine. so instead of trying to be strong and start living and growing as a person, im trying to get that back. be smaller. have my family's attention. it sucks. i know exactly what i do wrong, but i dont want to leave it. im scared. i havent been happy or excited in years because while i try to keep myself away from pain and disappointment, i also keep myself away from good things, like the doctor said in the movie.

Honestly? She didn't like it but this is exactly what she needed to hear. Life isn't fair. No one is gonna be perfect and come into your life to save you. You have to want it. You have to want to live. You have to find the reason. The simple fact is that you have to love that one thing and love living for it more than you hate feeling sad. There's no answer.

When I first saw this movie, I though this speech was not enough for the character, to which I felt connected not about the eating disorder but because of the depression I was facing.
Now that it's been seven years, I was somehow thinking about this movie and I listened to this speech again... he is so right.
It's just that, at that age, you're still too young to understand it.

Isn't exactly effective for depressed people. It's what we say because talk therapy has been nearly all we've had for 150 years and we don't know what else to say. One day, when neuroscience has provided us with all sorts of amazing tools - and it's already starting to - will be looked on as the dark ages of mental health treatment. This is true. If raw willpower was enough, don't you think we'd have realized that by now, and not tried to develop anything new?
It's a good scene, it's just only a small part of the real story.

I only recently realized what restrictive eds are for a lot of people, including myself. Eating enough gives me substance and life through which experiences and emotions flow. It's where I hold on to things. It's when those experiences and emotions became a nonstop barrage of pain and anxiety that I wanted to be rid of that substance. I want to be empty because it feels like I'm full of poison. It's too painful to exist, but I have faith things will get better, and I know I have the responsibility to stay alive and give what I can to the world, so I don't want to die either. Moderate starvation helps me to find a middle ground and subsist. But it's like he said, can I really move on to a better life if I'm too afraid to live? It just feels so unfair because none of it was my fault, and living is still so painful. I was given a weight too heavy for me to carry and I want to put it down.

well Keanu,s character is right.Though maybe a bit blunt but its true there is no point ,no meaning ,no reason. We are born we live we die.We all need help sometimes but we waste years at ttimes looking for a point ,a greater meaning .Its not there.Once you understand this things get a little easier.Like someone once said there is no spoon

Ether way you will not be long for this world as the system will grind such a person to pulp for their insolence. Being a worker drone will not be the end result of taking this message to heart. It's not bootstraps mentality. It's identifying the root cause of why people don't act on the help that's offered to them. He's saying "living will never not be scary and facing that is the first step toward courage".

    Is this proper therapeutic communication

    • @CB66941
      @CB66941 2 роки тому +1

Not really. Been to therapy before and coaching as well, and this kind of approach usually does not end well. For some people, it's a good wake up call. (though granted from context in this movie, this is the last place for these people to go to, and the therapist here is considered to be quite controversial in his methods, so in a funny kind of way, his methods don't reflect what most therapists would say)
But for people suffering from things like depression, anxiety, and in this movie's case anorexia, it can be very demoralizing and discouraging to hear.
For depression especially, imagine if you are constantly contemplating suicide, maybe even had several attempts, and you've been trying as much as you can but still feel so hopeless, and then imagine finally seeing a therapist who says to you that there is no point why we live and to just "grow a pair" after trying when you can't (depressed people tend to be have very low energy, with some having episodes of lying in bed all day). It will feel like there's no point going on anymore, since it's either "get on with the times" or bite the dust.
I used to have this "grow a pair" mentality until the depression got really bad. It wasn't until seeking a good therapist that I made some pretty good progress in my life.
