    I agree completely about the Tormek's chatter when sharpening scissors. I'll be looking at a Twice As Sharp system for scissors in the near future. About the burr.. Steve Bottorf's method for removing the burr is really good. I think it leaves just enough tooth in the edge to be useful. He has a video on here about it.
    Loving these videos PG, I'm about 6 months into my business and a week away from going full time. It's great to look at all the different perspectives others have and see what I can adopt in my business.

    Quick tip for you Pete, be careful with a loose rag around your grinder especially on the buffer side. If the wheel catches your rag it will bunch up inside the cover and wheel and might cause a divot on your wheel that is sometime hard to true sometimes.

    Bought a TAS about 25 years ago. Sharpened a few $500 shears using white wheel and silicone carbide wheel. Didn't want to but they begged and they were happy with them. Why it didn't ruin them don't know. Pinking sheers shouldn't be sharpening past the darker lap line. Buying new ones try them before you pay for them on the kind of fabric you will use them on. Seems like it was 10% of pinking sheers are defective from the factory. Sharpen regular scissors both blades. Always deburred bottom blade edge trailing then used scissor lube and gentlely close them a few times. Charged 2.00 a pair. Also sharpened knives on the white wheel free hand trailing edge. Deburred on silicon wheel, a piece of wood and a leather strap. 1.00 a knife. Also pizza rockers for Pizza Hut. For about 15 years used a Harbor Freight 1×30 for machetes, lawnmower blades, sickles. But the main business was copying keys and car opening and some locksmithing. All done in an old Kodak photo booth. Work area 4 foot by 6 foot. Clinton Iowa. Oops forgot sharpened many large drill bits for Ralston Purina on a Drex M5. Sorry to ramble on so long. 78 years old now. Didn't often make minimum wage after expenses but it was a good place to share Jesus with people that wanted to hear. God bless you folks.

    great video. you are so modest even with master level skills. Regarding convex beauty shears, i can see people uses twice as sharp with a jig to do it. what he did is after establishing the first edge, he changes the angle (increase +5 per time), then do a few more passes to maitain the convex. And i also see someone is using CBN wheel to reduce heat. the 19k machine you mentioned, it seems just a special jig + tormek.
    There is another horizontal grind machine with 3M paper to achieve the convex grind.

      Yes you can use TAS but you should also disassemble and stone the inside. In my business I just pass on them. Even though it pays $35
      Many systems work just as well when the sharpener is well practiced.
      My choice has these features that are important to me.
      Low dust
      Low heat
      It runs on my generator
      Clients like seeing the whetstone’s.
      I am working in front of my customers.

    A question. Would it be possible to sharpen scissors on a Tormek if it was provided with the scissor clamping system used on the Twice as Sharp?

    • @FREEHAND.WETGRINDER
      @FREEHAND.WETGRINDER  9 місяців тому

      Tormek has a jig for scissors.
      I sharpen lower end scissors on a belt sander. And sometimes by hand on the twice as sharp. But fabric scissors I prefer the jig on tas. But belt sander does a fine job if y can hold the angle.
      P.s. Tormek scissors jig makes a horrible sound. Like finger nails on chalk board

    Sir, is the reason you're not using with beauty scissors cutting method first to remove burr is you get finer result ? For future if there is possibility to show curved single bevel knife sharpening for example shoemaking knife.

  • @kellywillauer1059
    @kellywillauer1059 Рік тому

    Seeing is believing. High end blades are water
    Cooled while sharpening. Plastic cutting sticks are used to remove the burr.

    Hey boss, wondering on the little angle knob you switched out on the tas clamp, great idea. That thing hurts my fingers after 200 pairs, where do I find that knob?

    • @FREEHAND.WETGRINDER
      @FREEHAND.WETGRINDER  3 роки тому

      Amazon. It did take some modifications to shorten the arm a little. I once had a round rubber ball knob. It was great but can’t find them now. 1 1/4” ball

    At about 11:30 you stated that you "can use your TAS" to sharpen convex shears. WRONG! If you use the standard TAS (the one you have in your video) to sharpen convex shears you will ruin them, pure and simple. It's a different system/configuration (different set of wheels, clamp, technique, etc.) required to sharpen high-end shears. I know you're not deliberately trying to mislead people, but be careful with your assertions, especially when your experience and knowledge is limited (as it obviously is with high-end shears). No ill will intended, just doing my part to keep the public informed.

    • @tpuma1234
      @tpuma1234 4 роки тому

      So where in this video does he say anything about Ookami Gold wheels? He also makes no mention of reestablishing ride lines or deburring. Is he going to do that with wheels? No he's not, and neither are you. As I stated, the configuration is different, and it requires different tools and methods.

    • @tpuma1234
      @tpuma1234 4 роки тому

      @@joshuacassella6451 He uses a knife to cut the burr off an ordinary pair of scissors, not convex beauty shears (big difference). Try that trick with convex or semi-convex shears and see the results, why don't you? Watch the video again, and this time pay attention to what he's saying, not just what he's doing, if you're capable of that. LOL!!!

    • @roselps
      @roselps 4 роки тому +4

      Amazing! That little shiny line on the inside of the blade is NOT a wear pattern, it's a ride line, designed to be there, it is where the blades, "ride" along each other to allow the shear to cut properly! The absolute worse thing one can do is remove it!!!!!
      Without it the shear doesn't function properly.
