Everyone knows about how fast they can strike, but would be shocked by how fast they can move along the ground as well. I have to deal with them on my property every year. Oh, and they don’t always rattle/warn you before striking..
@@stevesabo1269 What does chicken taste like? Snake?
@@snapcutter9596 it's a lot easier than you think. Lol
@@killroyjohnson1256 Will do! I’m gonna have to sneak that one past the wife though. 😆
A baby rattlesnake only has a nub on the end of its tail that does not make noise unless it's shaking its tail against something and many nonpoisonous snakes shake their tails too.
There are signs that they are evolving to loose thier rattles probably due to the rattle making them super easy to find for poachers
I've encountered rattlesnakes in the desert. They don't want to bite you, so they make their noise and give you an opportunity to walk away.
Their venom is expensive to make, they’d rather use it on something they can eat.
@@aaronscarpa7469 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Don't believe everything you hear or say. They don't always give warning.
That camouflage is perfect.
Yea I would’ve never seen it and got bit
what camouflage???
@dutchreagan3676 exactly... now I fully understand the meaning of "if it was any closer" like woow😅
@@dutchreagan3676 the camouflage that hides it when it’s not out in the open. Besides that, one camouflaged pattern is gonna blend in with only so many backgrounds.

In effect, the snake is saying: "Keep your distance!"
They WILL strike before they rattle. I walked by one about 12 times within 2 feet in the weeds...finally it had enough and as I walked by again it struck when I was about 3 feet away going by...it missed me by about 6 inches. THEN it rattled.
@@boydwhite3708
It's like the whistle on your tea kettle, sometimes it works, sometimes not. Just as the snake tries to be responsible for its life and ours... we share equal responsibility. Do not harm or kill that which would not harm you... if left alone.
@@raymondparsley7442 A good general rule...with the disclaimer if they are in the wild they have their place...when they are on my property that is another matter. If they were not disposed they might get the notion the belonged. I have six rattles from rattlesnakes on my property over 7 years...four of the rattlesnakes were within 15 feet where I stand in my trailer right now.
They are quite scary.
@@boydwhite3708
In Louisiana I had a close call with a cottonmouth, I walked past the snake blinded by a grass catcher in one hand, almost stepped on it for sure. I heard something thump against the wooden fence, just to look back at this large snake heading in the opposite direction. It crawled under the fence into the neighbors yard and back to the drainage ditch. Never saw it again, but I come to realize the snake was only interested in getting away.... I know what you mean by being scary... They are that. We have rattlers here in central Texas, but I've never seen one...not yet anyway.
I bet those are well tested famous last words by some "what'll you think it's gonna do?" And then there's a "ouch, shit the buggers got me."
Aye..some cheeky shit mate.
Beware the individual who just wants to be left alone?
Exactly.
Man look at that pretzel!

KILL IT! The only good venomous snake is a dead one! Look for a nest and destroy all eggs. Find a nice black snake and put in it's place.
I’ve come across them . If you see one , there is another one around
I have a “line of sight” rule when it comes to anything that can kill me. If I can see it then I’m way to close and need more distance away from the threat. But that’s just me.
L. O. L. I have the same rule now!
I'm in total agreement! I might go a little further and say if I can hear it even I'm backing off, and GTHOT. (getting the hell out of there)

Not a bad way to look at it
...and lets not forget, are you coming back that way? where is Mr' Viper now? I always know!
After interrupting it's day, the snake is cocked and locked, ready to strike.
some friends in Arizona were playing with a rattlesnake to see how far in could strike. The snake struck its full length. So I recommend staying back further than you think you need to.

Skid marks is the operative term being that close😂 mad respect for vipers.
nice pair of boots right there
...and yes they taste like chicken.
Closer than I'd get😮
right, at least 12 feet, if not 15!!
The docile nature of the rattlesnake completely changes after it's been stepped on, and they can move very fast when they are angry!
To answer the unanswered question, it can strike as far as the spot it’s body comes off the ground to its head…
THAT RATTLE SNAKE SAID KEEP PLAYIN JUST KEEP PLAYIN WIT ME
I thought I better give you a like, since this might be one of your last videos (if not THE last).
Ran into many around the hills of San Diego county! Biggest one i ever seen was out by Barrett Lake, it was atleast 8 to 10 feet long and the head was as big as my hand and i have big hands!😮
Rock climbing, clearing out around a rock with my foot to build an anchor - my boot froze 9” above a rattle snake head. While I though I was going to die, it just sat there. I spent hours sitting 3 or 4 meters from it that day as I came and went from several climbs topping out in the same spot. It didn’t move much and was weirdly chill. One of my favorite memories as a Brit living in the US
I thought you would move in closer, let it strike, jump back, and guess at the strike distance. That would have been cool. Unless, you misjudged his capabilities.
He saved that one for tiktok
We have rattle snakes in West Virginia but I haven’t see one this big though. My brother was bit by a copperhead when we were kids walking by our pond putting the chickens up. He said it never hurt just felt like a stick poked him. Then we got half to the house and he started collapsing and was in the hospital for like 2 weeks
We have large Rattlers in SW Va. Saw once what a copperhead can do to a child's foot. Be careful. It's that time of year friends.
😬😬
@@Pyro2979 yes, spring they come out and in october they are moving around to get warm on concrete and close to the heat from homes.

Never mess with the savage beast. Their abilities will shock you.

I believe a rattle snake can strike out over half of its length, and lightning fast.or the blink of your eye.
Beautiful Animals and wow that camo on that trail watch where you step always
Saw two western diamondbacks in seperate locations a couple days ago while trail walking. They knew we were there but neither rattled. Left them alone and of course nothing happenned.
Bob Hansler found out they can strike further than you think!
"How far can a rattlesnake strike!" We'll never know by this video.
I am in Yorkshire UK, and that is about the distance I want to keep between that snake and myself. Thanks!
You’re closer than I ever want to f’ing be.
I was walking across the desert from a friend's back to my house one august day and behind me I heard a slight flick of the rattle....and you'll hear locusts or whatever at times and wonder if it's a rattlesnake but when you actually hear one you know exactly what it is. I turned around and sure enough, it was off to my left but about 10 yards back was a huge fat one coiled up and ready to strike. About as fat as my wrist idk how long but it was ready. Idk I have a lot of stories I grew up here in southeast new Mexico. Another time I was up on a small dirt hill in my backyard with brush and overgrowth something told me to look down and about a coke can distance from my foot was another fat healthy rattler. No rattling at all though. Was about 85 degrees in early October
You should have walked to your right instead of your left. Wind him up and his striking distance shortens. Going to your left could possibly have given him the unwound length to reach out a little bit further if he needed to
Biting an absolute last resort for them. That venom is precious. The sound of their tail should be enough warning but then again. Natural selection.
Perfect range for a CCI 38/357 load, all done...
Absolutely no shortage of these dangerous serpents...

Dove hunters come over from Dallas to West Texas and see Diamond Back Rattlesnakes and freak out. I have sat 3’ away from a small Diamond Back and was not worried what so ever. Keep your distance and leave them alone.
I live in Carlsbad we get em here I haven't seen any in about 2 years but they are around. There's said to be Mojave here now as well
so are we supposed to bow to you trying to claim your bravery? rattlesnakes are all over the US. the eastern diamond backs are the largest. you was probably close to a western diamond back. a small one as you say, you was no doubt out of it's immediate strike range, but it can also move quickly.
OK if they keep their distance I'll leave them alone. count yourself lucky, they aren't always so polite.
They die the moment I see them. Wife and I are the top of the food chain on his outfit.
@@frankmorris4790 yeah kill the animals that control vermin in the area instead of calling to have it removed to a different location. No reason to kill a beneficial animal.
Ok tough guy 👍🏼
I had a rattler hit my van tire from about 10ft away. This snake went from the white line on the side of the road, past the yellow center line. All of 12ft. I thought he was going to pop the tire. An amazing animal.
Generally about 2/3 of their body length. Never try to touch one that's already coiled. You can however gently scoop it up with a shovel. They usually wont flee once in strike position. If they are relaxed and not in strike position you can usually crocodile hunter them by the tail. Most pit vipers cant get a good strike without coiling up. Rattlesnakes are dangerous but highly predictable. You can often just toss a box or something in front of it with the opening facing the snake and itll put itself in the box.
That very first posture when the video starts is sooo badass!! Absolutely ready for anything!! Beautiful!!!
That's a baby for a Western Diamondback. I've been closer than that to a full-grown timber rattler, which is about that length. More accurately, my camera was closer. I had a telephoto lens on my camera so I got a good close shot from right in front of it. My face and hands were at least a foot farther away than the front in my lens. Still, pretty close.
This one is an adult. In Arizona these snakes are typically 3 feet or so in length as adults, with some closer to 4'.
@@RattlesnakeSolutions thanks. I thought they were bigger than that, closer to the Eastern Diamondback.
@@JohnDrummondPhoto Eastern DB's gets a little bigger, but most adults are similar to Western DB's. I think it's common misconception because people tend to share video and pics of the largest ones that can get up to 8 feet.
One day, decades ago, I was jogging on a trail and I saw a few small snakes ahead of me on the path and leaped over them. I turned around to see that they didn't scurry away like usual, so I went back to investigate. By the time I got back to them they moved off to the side of the path. I crouched down low so I could look at them and they were all looking at me, moving around but keeping their fierce looking eyes on me. Then I heard a rattler start up. Then I was like, "OK. Time to leave these kids alone." That was before anyone ever told me there were rattlesnakes in Wisconsin. I was definitely within striking range of them, twice. That was pretty close.
Oh yeah? How big were they?
@@trinawhitener7753 About two feet long. I'm guessing they were juveniles, but they were born with those killer instincts.
SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME ONE TIME JOGGING UP A HILL IN MID-STRIDE I LOOKED DOWN AND A COILED UP RATTLESNAKE, RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRAIL, FORTUNATELY IT WAS EARLY MORNING AND IT WAS PROBABLY STILL ASLEEP, OR STILL TOO COLD TO DO ANYTHING !!!
What part of WI? I’ve never heard of rattlesnakes in my home state.

There was a man here in South Texas where I live and he was demonstrating to the kids at the camp how to catch the Rattlesnake and the snake got him first and went straight to the hospital and barely survived being alive. He is stupid doing that
Need a long snake stick. Much safer!
That man was a fool…and those people who ran the camp were insane to have him there, nothing says ‘lets kill the kids in an awful & painful way’ like offering to teach them to catch rattlers. 🤬
I have come across a few rattlesnakes and im always amazed at how much they want absolutely nothing to do with me. They rattle to let me know they are there but never have i ever had one strike at me or chase me .... yet so many people are convinced they are out to get you.
I’m starting to relate to snakes. They just wanna be left alone too. Awesome demonstration Bryan!!
Me too! 😂
For some strange reason this Snake reminds me of the alien ships in the original War of the World's.
Thank you for not killing it.
Never ever would!
"I'm not saying you should try this..."😂
Snake's exterior is well camouflaged.
Will make some nice 👢 boots!!
Your intestines would make a nice belt!
"Hey! A rattlesnake! Hold my beer.
Watch this..."
Thanks for being nice to the snake.
Love it! I’ve seen them strike just under what they measure in length. I watched a six footer strike about 5 foot and get a good hit ima dog
Holy cow. It blends in so well with the ground. Wouldn’t even notice it without the rattle.
The fact that the snake is so well camouflaged is unsettling.
I'm happy to finally see a reasonable human understanding they don't want to bite, most any creature would prefer to leave the situation rather than risk injuring themselves or wasting their venom. It takes energy and time for snakes and critters like skunks to replenish the fluids they use for defense. Humans are the most dangerous animal on earth
We were told as children that snakes can strike at 2 to 3 times it's body length. We always gave them a wide range.
Rattlesnake "what do you mean youll see me later,"
I fully expected the snake to not be there when he panned back to it
“Why is that meat tree talking to me?? 👹”
As a forester I was in woods everyday in Georgia. One day I was walking and felt something move under my right foot and looked down to find me standing on a 5 ft Eastern diamond back. I jumped (seemed like) 10 ft straight up. He never struck at me or rattled! I was lucky that day. I was walked up on many in my 30 yrs in the woods. One time I had one strike at me with half a rabbit sticking out his mouth! One time I was about to walk under eye level limb when I realized the limb didn't look just right and when I stopped I realized it was a rattlesnake stretched out on limb!! True stories and I have many more.
I’m calling BS
The one on the branch was off course a timber rattlesnake 🐍
I'm sorry but I wanted pimp to just strike dude on the foot 😂🤣😹💙
You: “I not saying you should try this, but…”
Me: oh don’t worry about that lol
i’m at a LOT of a bit of a distance from that western diamondback rattle snake.
You have to factor in what if he moves forward to strike, and what if you fall down while you’re trying to get back. Don’t underestimate a rattler.
That would be me - I would be trying to run away so fast that I would trip!!
snake thinks it's dirty Harry. Just come a little closer. Make my day.
Man. I measured it a couple times. Never measure it. It only leads to heartbreak 💔 and disappointment.
People from California moving to Texas ought to just find out for themselves. To be sure.
Now , there’s a man after my own heart !
California has rattlers too genius
I heard other snakes out there like to eat rattlesnakes, and they’re basically immune to their venom.
I live in Kern County and I've run into rattlers quite a few times. The scary part is they're so well camouflaged that when they start rattling, you're usually right on top of them. It's a lot louder than it seems in UA-cam too. It sounds like an adult grabbed a wooden rattle and shook it as fast as they can. The first one I ran into I never even saw, I could only hear it. I was in a Canyon on my motorcycle and walked into some tall dead grass, several feet tall, to pee. It started rattling somewhere within a few feet of me. Scared the life out of me
Looks like he was digesting a meal
That's a very healthy looking Westy.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ❤️ RATTLESNAKE'S!!!!!
Used to gold prospect the Arizona and Nevada deserts. I never had any problem with any creatures that live there. Always respected them and their space because I was a visitor in their home and did not want to interfere with them. I did carry a handgun, but that was for protection against the two-legged varmints that truly are the most dangerous creatures in the wild.
I remember seeing pics of snakes when I was younger and thinking “oh how do people not notice them , there “camo” isn’t that good “ . But seeing this rattler probably 6-8 feet from the camera , if you lost eye contact with it or it was just lying there, you would have no clue !
They are good at what they do!
I was going to say about three-quarters of its body length.
yes, that's correct.
I have seen way bigger ones than this one out in west Texas
Rattlesnake strikes are fast as lightning

Damn, he is TWS mode!
If that snake were just laying there you'd never even see it!

that would be a one way ticket to the emergency room if you get bit by a dangerous rattlesnake.
Not really.
I have been told they can strike as far as they are long.
how?
You heard wrong. They can strike 1/3 to 1/2 their body length.
i caught a baby diamond back and put it in the aquarium with a king snake. within 1 minute that king ate that rattler. few days later i convinced my friend to release the king snake. We need more king snakes in those hills.
I bet the great Steve Irwin would have picked up the blighter and give him or her a kiss and a cuddle.
I spoke with a rattlesnake handler at a roundup in Texas who said some rattler’s can strike out beyond 2/3’s.
