2:59 notice how the monk's eyes are white. He is doing a form of meditation where he looks up in the center of the forehead between the eyebrows at the pineal gland (third eye). While doing this he has his teeth mewed while holding his tongue to the roof of his mouth. This form of meditation is called shambhavi mahamudra.
Now gordon is doing another form of meditation to where every 5 seconds he looks at his watch to see when the hell the meditation will end.

This is something many people misunderstood about meditation. As a theravada Buddhist meditation isn't about not thinking about any thoughts. It's about training your awareness! Just like how working out is muscle training meditation is awareness training! So the fact that you realize u have a hard time concentrating and that realizing ur mind drifted away from concentration is also means u were aware of it! It's actually not the failure, it's in a way a success

When people think of religion most of the time they think of monotheistic religion (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, ect) religions that are purely based on faith and have one God that everyone must follow. However there are other religions out there that are based on just being compassionate, nonviolence, and peaceful and even have no Gods to worship. Also there is a difference in the way we think of God in the west vs how the East thinks of God/Gods

Gordon missed the point of the lesson. The root of his frustrations is his constant need to fill his time with what he deems "important", he has a need to control everything down to the last second. If he can't spare 20 minutes to be alone with his thoughts, or the patience to withstand a drawn out process, of course he will not have the capacity to control his temper or find peace in times of frustration.

You have to consider, in Ramsay’s world, he is used to the fast pacing of the Western World. Listen to what he says talking about critics and stuff. That is the world he is conditioned to live it. He has to unlearn the world he is used to. In order to actually master meditation, you have to able to slow everything down.

That monk that’s with Gordon is pretty much my uncle, He’s been a monk for over 10 years and he just quit being a monk last year. I’m 14 years old and I went to that exact temple to get ordained for 2 weeks. Sadly the head monk who runs the temple has passed away this year.
When I watched this video for the first time I was so shocked at the coincidence that Gordon just happened to interview that specific monk and in that specific temple.

Cannon Blasters & infographics, if you’ve just started meditating, meditate in short periods of time (10 - 15 mins) then as you get better gradually extend those periods to 30mins - 1hr (sounds relaxing but it actually hurts after a while, as in, being in the same position). Meditation is all about the present, and knowing we are living in the moment. Concentrate on your breathing every second (notice that your stomach is expanding then deflating after each breath) and if you’re distracted by another thought or pain, quickly come back to your breathing and stomach. Sounds awfully simple, but it takes years to perfect. Good luck ☺️❤️

"He can switch off quite easily" - Complete misunderstanding and it's one of the biggest hindrances to meditation.
What I learnt is that if anything, it's switching ON.
Thoughts rush in, pain appears, you feel restless, you feel impatient. However, it's not that these things come from meditation, we just become more aware of it.
Never meditate with the goal of becoming more "peaceful", that would defeat it. Never grasp for pleasure. The only goal, if any, is being passively aware of EVERYTHING.

That's is the reason why the monk always repeats lazy lazy lazy... boredom boredom....
That's why it uses lots of time to practice because sometimes when we sit still, we usually lost in our own thought. When we realize our feeling and thought, then, we can control our actions.

Did you hear the last thing that he said as he exited the sanctuary? "Where's the bar?"
Those few minutes of stillness, those few minutes of being with himself, stressed him and activitated his coping mechanism of alcohol.
This observation is not to stigmatize him but to alert all of us and remind us to be acutely mindful of ourselves.🙏

Hello Gordon! I meditate about 2 hours a day. Starting meditation is the most amazing I initiated in my life. The benefits are countless. Try it 15 minutes or less in the morning and 15 minutes or less before sleeping. It will probably change your life too. Have a great day! :D

As someone who teaches meditation regularly, I can assure you that this is not a good way for beginners to get started. Stillness of mind in a world full of instant gratification and distractions galore is an advanced technique. Something much more basic and interactive would have brought Gordon to an enjoyable place.

What kind of technique would you advice people to get started with?
Because I've seen great results with children, and teenagers trying out anapana.
although walking insight meditation definitely isn't a good way to start.
