Brazil is a beautiful country. My friend and I travelled the length of this country during our 'backpacking' tour of South America. Rio de Janeiro is a lovely city with its parks and beautiful Copacabana beach with its silver sand and the beautiful ladies. Didn't have any problems in Rio apart from our taxi driver refusing to go to certain parts of the city. I do feel sorry for the people who are caught in between the gangs and the police, it must be terrifying for the families with young children. I think the police needs to be commended on the difficult work they do under very difficult conditions. Love from the UK to the people of Brazil.❤❤✌✌🌹🌹
Just don't go there. It's not safe for anyone, even worse for tourists. The beauty of some beaches don't compensate for the fact everyone is in danger 24/7.

I was in Rio from December to March. Stayed in São Christavao. I didnt notice much crime, except the wheel in the back of my car was stolen and a traveller I met got mugged at São Christavao train station by 8 guys, one carrying a machete. On New Years Eve I heard fireworks like you expect, then i heard them again every week. Until eventually the fireworks got a closer and didnt sound like fireworks, but gunshots. But Rio is pretty chill if you arent involved in this drug war. The only thing that reminds you of the danger is everyone's home has tall walls with barbed wire at the top. The walls and gates are so tall, you could be walking past a indoor football pitch or volleyball court and not even be aware. A lot of private property has to be closed and hidden from the public or it will attract attention from theives and criminals.
Rio is a very weird city. It's both a modern clean metropolis, and an open warzone within blocks of each other. As Brazil becomes gradually richer I hope the situation in the favalas become drastically better. God Bless Brazilians. God willing their street cops cease being so corrupt, and the poor become well enough off they abandon the endless cycle of death and addiction.
The majorety of people watching this very good documentary abaut Violence in Rio de Janeiro ( And all Over Brazil), don't realize the Real Dimension of the Crime in Brazil. Brazil is simple the most Violent Sociaty in the World. In Brazil every year more people are killed than in a real War Zone. I lived and worked in Rio de Janeiro for 18 long Scary months,and since my 1st day until the last one there wasnt a single day/ night without multiple shootings in my neighbourhood,and iam talking abaut Machine Gun shootings. But the Worst part of this Absolute Insane Vicious Circle ,is the fact that the common citizens Lives in Constant Fear, but Specialy from the Authorities/Police that from the criminal gangs .They arel Terrified of being stopped by the Police while driving, specialy during the Weekends. They call it a Police Blitz. I thing that by the name "you" can imagine what happens during those Police "routine" traffic stops. My Grandmother used to say this abaut Brazil " God made Brazil a Paradise But the Devil put his people to live and Rule over that country ".

They're not as scary as they make them out to be in this documentary. It also depends on which favela you're in. I've been to Rocinha, the biggest favela in Rio, and honestly felt safer there than on the beaches.
From what I learned, kids aren't necessarily being "led" to join the gangs. They do because with poverty, lack of opportunities, and discrimination, it's the best way they see how to make money. 😂 I lived in Fortaleza for almost 4 years, one of the most dangerous places in LATAM. Shootings were a daily occurrence, the gangs particularly liked to put road blocks across certain roads at night and then rob the unfortunate drivers who happened upon the road blocks. At night it was common practice to never stop at traffic lights, only slow down and make sure you didn’t hit another car. Yeh real safe place!

Unfortunately, the homes in those neighborhoods looked like fortresses because the residents there fear home invasions. Exactly, Rio is a relatively safe city for the average tourist. Even having some "problematic areas", Rio is among the safer cities in Brazil and statistically safer than at least 40 major US cities
Yeah I just got back myself and honestly it's way more relaxed than people.make it out to be. That being said, flashing cash and valuables on the street is a dumb move. Dress down, take photos as much as you want, but put your phone back in your pocket once the photo is taken. And maybe have a burner phone to give to an opportunistic robber if needed

Wouldn't work. Firstly, El Salvadorian gangs are street gangs. They don't have centralized leadership structures, and they only perform low level street crime using light weapons like knifes and pistols. Brazilian factions on the other hand are more akin to cartels, in terms of structure and power. Brazilian gangs are drug traffickers, and are apart of international drug smuggling, they don't make their money solely from petty crimes. Secondly, Brazilian gangs have far superior firepower to El Salvador gangs. Brazilian gangs have LMGs, 50 cals etc.
And I'm guessing the lawyer's fees are paid out of drug money too. If her client can not provide a legitimate source for the money he's paying the lawyer then that money should be confiscated. That's how you get them.

If it was not the airport issue, i would love to visit Rio someday.

I've backpacked in Brazil, was in Rio for the Carnaval, great atmosphere, beautiful weather and very friendly locals, but you do have to be alert, as anything can happen, don't let the peaceful moment fool you. I would wear a singlet, shorts, and hide cash in my shorts, everything else was left at the hostel, that way me and my partner would go around and not attract attention. And during the carnaval, the police and army are all over, so it's safer. Stick to the touristy areas, pay attention to your surroundings, and don't carry valuables.

I've backpacked in Brazil, was in Rio for the Carnaval, great atmosphere, beautiful weather and very friendly locals, but you do have to be alert, as anything can happen, don't let the peaceful moment fool you. I would wear a singlet, shorts, and hide cash in my shorts, everything else was left at the hostel, that way me and my partner would go around and not attract attention. And during the carnaval, the police and army are all over, so it's safer. Stick to the touristy areas, pay attention to your surroundings, and don't carry valuables.
