Love watching your work on the lathe building a form 1 suppressor. It makes me wait to buy a lathe large and try it out myself. that being said the readings you're getting are more quiet then a 22 suppressor shooting subsonics by about 20db which is impossible. An unsuppressed 5.56 should be around 165 not 105 db so its obvious that meter cant handle the very short peak reading of a gunshot.
Yeah I've had others tell me the same, it seems to take a very high dollar meter to get the true dB reading. That being said would it not be like weighing items on a scale that is off by many lbs, and then weighing several items the numbers should be relative to one another even tho they are off by say 60 dB. I think that is clear as mud..lol thanks for watching oh yeah it's a 300 blackout shooting sub sonic loads.

that meter in no way can measure properly. a proper meter costs at least a few thousand.
The difference between A weighted and C weighted is simply bandwidth!!
A is @ 120hz-30khz
C is @30hz-30khz
Human ear can register 80hz-13-14khz
For example the dog whistle a human can not hear is 16-18k I believe maybe even 20k I can't remember exactly however out of human range!
Another factor is lower frequency register higher on db meter because waveform created!!
Your meter read higher db when measuring lower frequencies!!
Really is simple physics. The 80hz down to 30hz are frequencies you feel much more then actually hear. I kinda describe it "you can feel 30hz in your feet and 55-65hz in your chest!! If that makes sense?
So my takeaway.... adding/removing cones has minimal impact on sound. Tube volume does more than baffles.
I’d be interested to hear a larger tube with no baffles.
Given that dB is a logarithmic scale, a 10dB range suggests something grossly inconsistent between rounds fired. I'm guessing the meter doesn't deal well with impulsive noise. In any case, the variation renders the difference on sound level between your suppressor variations statistically insignificant.

These numbers are totally wrong. Should be around 128 to 140 benchmarks on the form 4. Your meter is off or you don’t have it set right
I have really enjoyed watching all of your videos on this subject. I would love to see a summary video explaining which designs were the most efficient. It would be interesting if you considered things like a much larger or longer can for more volume. Did you see significant benefit from the reflex vs traditional?

Give the Lehigh Defense 194gr max expansion bullets a try, if you haven't already.
I finally worked up a load for them in my 300 BLK and they are impressive for both suppresibility and Lethality. They do a great job on whitetail!

+BS in The Shop yep. They're designed to expand at 700-1200 fps. Not suitable for supersonics though.
They also do a great job on black bears 100 yds or less. In subsonic 300 B.O.

That is one nice set of carbide drills. Wonderful gift.
Great to see the tests -- interesting that the average with just 3 cones in was so good.. With the full complement of baffles that seems overall your best. Remembering the dB scale is logarithmic so the unsupressed was way louder - suppression soaks up that severe blast shock wave.

yeah Chris, the real star of this video were the carbide drills, you get a chance look up Sandvik Coromant R840-1450-30-A0A 1220. I'm being told that that meter is not capable of getting true dB readings of gunshots.. well you work with what you have.. thanks for the positive words
FYI: Your DB readings at a specific frequency would need a Octive band anylizer
Ideally a shot per each frequency would then het plotted on a NC Curve
The noise criteria curve NC would allow sound test as compared to how the human ear here's it.
Simply shooting and seeing a DB reading is the max reading but u don't no what frequency the meter
Is reading ?? 90 DB at one Freq. is not the same as 90 DB at another Freq to the human ear
did you ever find out if the reflex suppressor was any better or worse then the standard one that would go on the tip of the barrel?
did the reflex sound any better than store bought?

fine work on all the steps you went through. Heck of a job showing and the use of the sound meter that you have available. I'm sure if anyone telling you your equipment to test it is wrong that your willing to take the 10 k or more sound meter equipment from them. Best of luck on surgery.

Nice Video! I wonder if you tried a rubber wipe on the end cap if it would reduce the first round pop and overall numbers?
This setup give an idea of the suppression, better than the only so subjective sound captured from the camera.
Up here I don't even think we could even apply to make or own a suppressor, gun laws are so much more restrrictive.
You'll love drilling with carbide, just be careful not to introduce chips under the lips when pecking, that normally chips the edges. Keep em under constant coolant.

I though I had responded to you PB, but at any rate I've been told that the meter I used is not capable to capture a gunshot. therefore the test is worthless. I find this hard to believe since I was doing a comparison between a store bought device and one I built. I just wanted to see which ones had the lower numbers.
i want to try running truck exhaust through the suppressor to eliminate the first round pop
If you incorporate o-rings into your endcaps the extra resistance ought to help them stay put instead of unscrewing when you try to remove the suppressor. Will also help a little with noise reduction keeping the gases where they ought to be. Also clean up your muzzle thread on the rifle with scotchbrite or similar to get any crap outta there and put a tiny amount of copper grease or just plain gun oil on there.

Usually sound meters have a directional mic at the top. But that being said. I think the averages show.

for everyone thinking these are accurate numbers... you can't even suppress a .22LR down to those numbers. in a few of the shots, the bolt slamming shut is louder.

this test was done with a 300 blackout and I would say that the cone baffles worked best. good luck
@@bstanga So would you say the reflex design sounded better to you than the standard commercial unit? I've got a AR10 in 7.62 with a 20" stainless barrel. I've been wanting to build a reflex suppressor for it for years. Especially with that long heavy barrel. Do you think the reflex is worth the extra work? I was thinking going 12" long and maybe 1.75" diameter.
Exactly, had 2 of these theh did ok but my 2 monoblock suppressors worked much better

you know I was waiting for like 10 days for the weather to cooperate, and it never seemed to dry up, so when I did the video I was like making a mud hole, so I was just trying to get it done, but the numbers show the last conf with all six baffles plus the big blast baffle was the quietest , to me that is strange since all the volume in the tube was used up in that config. I think more testing with a nore expensive meter designed for gunfire..

I.e. your meter ranges from likely 63 to maybe 8000 Freq. Point being you don't know because the
Meter does not show you, it only shows a DB in one of 8 ranges / Freq.
LOOK up a NC curve, it will help u undertand
Yea you def have ur meter set waaaaayyy off. Bolt closing should b around 112db professional supressor should b between 125 and 138 and if you made your supressor right wich it seems u have it should b roughly the same

you Have too big a hole in the cones for the passage of a bullet and try to change the distance from the muzzle to the first cone and realize what a huge difference in the results.

If you watch the video closely you'll see that the suppressor is working better than your max results. The DB meter is picking up the sound of the spent cartridge hitting on something.
Very good of you to catch that, A lot of folks say this test was crap because I did not use $5000 meters.. I think it puts numbers to the test, it may not be the industry standard's #'s. Every time I see a suppressor shot on video I know that the camera's mic will clip the audio, and they all sound the same.. thanks for watching

Wait, you didn't spend thousands of dollars on a Bruel & Kjaer meter for your one test? (There were two main sonic metrology "experts" suggesting that. Sean Cody and David Morris.) That's crazy. This test is flawed.

well I know its not a bruel & kjaer sound level meter, and the conditions were not controlled, but you must admit is was better than watching a video and saying "that one sounds better" thanks for watching
Not really. I have been following sound testing and the proper methodology to do it since 2002. The problem with your video is that the numbers have no basis in reality. They are misleading. The sound meter that you are using and the microphone on it are not designed to capture the sound of a gunshot or the energy of a gunshot. They do not have the range nor do they collect data fast enough to give an accurate reflection of the sound signature or the energy in the sound.
That said, the workmanship in your suppressor is outstanding. It would be interesting to get it in front of a proper meter and microphone setup and see how it performs compared to the manufacture suppressors.
+BS in The Shop hey way, please don't take my criticism as anything but constructive as that's how it's meant. I myself get annoyed at all of the 13 year olds who want to comment on my smoking a cigar while I shoot in my videos

sound meter is bad. no possibility to calibrate. the readings you are getting are too unreliably low. first shot should have been @ < 190 Dbs oe more

Hi I'm not trying to insult you in any way whatsoever . The db reading you are getting though are not even in the realm of correct . even with the mic attenuation it's clearly 140 or more . i just wanted you to be aware because someone that has been running cans for a while talks to you then hears it they could think you were intentionally misleading them and I genuinely believe your not attempting to be dishonest . if you were in that db range you could fire 1000 rounds with no ear pio with zero discomfort .
I just finished the video and you said unless the meter is reading wrong just for a baseline .YOUR bcg while a plastic promag is 116db or very cloae and 124 with an empty magwell simply the action not firing it so ....

pepelapiu2004 the lab grade equipment is hard to come by.
The "a" scale is what most people use. DBA that's why your readings are low.
