When I skiied Sugarloaf back in the 70's I'd gaze longingly up at the snowfields and wish I'd have the chance to ski there. It never happened, and certainly never will now. Your video is a great look at what it's like to actually ski the snowfields. Thanks so much for posting.

I have done this route. Not for the faint of heart at all. Watching your shot of elevator shaft brought me back to the moment. You may be the only person I know who has video of it.
Great video. I am a season pass holder at Killington so I ski often and I have been pretty much everywhere, but sadly I have not make it to the Loaf. Mostly because of the distance. After your video I now know when the snow is good I need to make my way up there. I love to ski the trees. Take care
Appreciate it. Although Sugarloaf has its fair share of cold, windy, icy days, when there is snow it is hard to compete with, and the new lift will make the crowds minimal. Have fun out there!
And ice. When I first skied Alta in Utah, and stepped on to a steep black diamond, I was expecting all crust and ice. It was so soft, getting an edge was a piece of cake.

@@colter7300 That's just laughable. Many Olympic and World Cup skiers are from the East and you think they couldn't ski those spots? Bode Miller anybody? Julie Parisien? She started out on a little bump here in Maine for a ski mountain and was the top US skier. So many more to even bring up.
@@teleguy5699 I've had icy conditions at Snowbird. Its no where near what its like here on the east coast but both are challenging for different reasons. Trying to get into anything on the Curque as a snowboarder after its been skied out is more challenging than anything on the east coast. I think the gnarliest line I've rode was DJ tramline on the east. and out west the Pioneer ridge cliff area at Brighton, had some mandatory airs. I love the east coast and SLC specifically. Havent had a chance to ride the cascades but I think they would be next on my list. Colorado seems nice if you have money to live there.
Dude, you are insane. Those backside runs, especially Ball and Chain looked ridiculous. I've skied Colorado EX terrain, and that looked harder than some of those runs. Also, you got super lucky with the snow. It looked amazing. I hope I ride that kind of terrain as well as you some time.
Backside has a lot to offer when conditions are in, so when we got a bit of snow I had to skip class and get after it. Just trying to showcase the what the east coast can offer when the snow is good. More to come hopefully...
Sick video! You mentioned in the comments how extreme chute/elevator shaft was now put in bounds, and I’m wondering how you got down there. I’ve skied the backside a fair few times but never been down that way before. And also, did you go out behind Bullwinkles to get into the west mtn. bowl or did you take a different route, ive always wanted to get in there
The entrance to the chutes are right below the final steep pitch of the backside, if you look closely in the video you can see signs subtly pointing the entrances out. As for the bowl, I cut into the woods off Timberline. Thanks for the comment!

Got back there after almost 50 years, and the the place still amazed me - you just don't have to hit the Rockies to get a massive challenge if that is what you are looking for. I could probably still make it down some of the stuff you videoed, but what would take you 10 minutes would be a 3 hour trial for me now! :)
@@richardpare3538 That's great to hear, Sugarloaf has been one of my favorite mountains since I was in elementary school and it feels good to do the mountain a justice with videos like these. It's changed a lot since the 60's but even with the new terrain it has retained its charm and surely has challenging enough terrain to keep me entertained. Have fun out there!

I'm not entirely sure if it is still called elevator shaft but it is in bounds and on the map, perhaps under a different name. It is an amazing run to hit the chutes into brackett as well, so much better than that dull traverse. Cool video…what you skied was Backside-Adrenaline Rush-Extreme Chute…it’s gotten quite convoluted in there the last several years. Pretty ballsy posting video poaching that terrain. Especially the west mtn bowl. You’re obviously a good skier, and honestly I’d like to make a couple laps and show you around. I live in Kingfield. Not sure how to about sharing contact info or whatever…hit me up if you have any interest. You hiked back up west mtn bowl…interesting. Careful sharing this stuff man. There are few secrets left.
March is generally the best month for snowfall at Sugarloaf and has the highest likelihood of being close to 100% open, but impossible to predict. Last year March was warm and wet until the last weekend when we got 2 feet of snow....
Hello when you say backside does that mean facing west toward Carribou Valley road? I’ve wondered about hiking the Appalachian Trail , camping and backcountry snowboarding there. Thanks
The backside generally refers to the southeast facing ridge off the summit of Sugarloaf. The Appalachian trail ascends the west side across the ravine and to the summit, and there is also some amazing terrain in there if conditions allow. Not sure the feasibility of winter camping but definitely a remote backcountry area.
@@CamStathos thanks. Ever since Covid the AT parking lot between Carrabassett Valley and Stratton has been getting snow plowed . I’ve backpacked into Bigelow and have seen tracks leading up to the Crocker mountains and backside Sugarloaf zone. That means people are hiking up there too and it’s tracked out and camping and possibly backcountry riding is feasible. I plan on going up there hopefully this winter and if it seems right, possibly have a snowboard system to go there in the future. Thanks for the help

These chutes are accessed by gates off the backside. As you come down to powder keg along the rope you will see a sign that says " The terrain beyond this sign is extreme, an accident may result in death and rescue may be impossible, be careful and enjoy this wild place." Once you find that sign duck the rope and you are in. The first chute is elevator shaft. I will first warn you; this is the type of stuff that sends your balls to your throat. It looks like in this video he laid it out further left to hit ball and chain too. Eventually you drop out at hells gate. And subsequently bracket.

This is why east coast skiers are better than any west coast skiers. We are more technical because of the sparse snow conditions at times.
