- Skoda Slavia 2022 is here and we have tested the 1-litre TSI engine that is positioned against the Honda City , Hyundai Verna and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz . Based on the MQB-A0-IN platform that is heavily localised the Slavia boasts of class leading dimensions and 179mm of ground clearance which is the best in class - in fact more than SUVs also. Editor Sirish Chandran tests the Slavia in Goa and is impressed with its ride and handling balance, and also thinks it is a beautifully styled car. But can Skoda revive the dormant C-segment sedan in India?

The 179 mm ground clearance will definitely give the Slavia an edge over its competitors in terms of practicality considering the kind of roads we have in India. If I'm not wrong this would be the highest figure for ground clearance in the Sedan category.

I was forced to use an SUV in the last few years due to horrible road conditions in our area. In fact our C- Class remained parked in the garage for long durations. Neither me nor my dad had the heart to take it out on long trips as every trip inevitably resulted in tyre damage, rim damage or loss of a sensor. Not that road conditions have improved dramatically, but I am just done with driving an SUV. I am looking for a fun to drive car with good handling and ride, the Slavia might just fit the bill. Looking forward to the 1.5L review because that's the one might be right for me. I love watching your reviews because your enthusiasm for driving and cars in general just shines through!
Same happens with my Audi and BMW. Recently took my bmw on Delhi-Jaipur Highway, tyre got burst on rough patch of road at 110 kmph. Thank god we are saved and thanks to run flat tyres so we could continue our journey.
But i never bought pseudo SUV and i have love for sedans only. For the same reason, i am looking for 1.5L dsg slavia.

I think the Slavia is having higher ground clearance also because of the reason that, Skoda knows there is a community that is into tuning & modding like lowering ride height and low profile tyres, bigger wheels

I just hope this sells well and make manufacturers build more sedans. As a sedan kind of person I never had too many options when I set out to get a set of wheels.

Great review as always! And glad you are back! Just one small feedback, you mentioned the grip difference between Kushaq and Slavia due 16 and 17 inch wheels. However, the tyre width is 205mm so the grip levels will be the same, right?

It will surely give tough competition not only to City, Ciaz and Verna but also Kushaq, Taigun, Creta along with sub- compact SUVs until VW Virtus goes on sale. Many Indian buyers ditch sedans specifically for their low ground clearance. But not anymore. Though there is a different fun of driving low sitting sedans. Tough world to live in at this moment.

I would choose slavia over any mid size SUV all day
A well rounded package that can take on our roads well and provides great value while preforming great. Only caveat is with the shrinking sedan market, which if overcome; would make this a Virtus the best sellers.

Ride is much better, crazy ground clearance, and more grown up road manners. In terms of outright cornering speeds it will be little higher on Slavia

Somewhat I would prefer the 1.5 TSI of the Slavia any day over the 1.5 naturally aspirated V-Tec in the City. What do you think Evo India team?
HAHA BUT FUEL EFFICIENCY GOES BRR...
1.5 TSI Evo is very powerful than I-VTec...but as it as reliable as I-VTec is still a question and TSI is fuel sensitive engine VW recommends to use 95 ron or above...there lot of kushaqs having EPS failure is also things to be noted....1.5 TSi is shipped completely and not assembled here like 1l TSI so which makes parts expensive to replace
Watch out for the 1.5 TSI review on the 2nd of March

I have always been an sedan, hatchback guy never really got into SUV trend. This car looks amazing. Would certainly buy if i had the means. Now if Skoda gets the new Fabia with the same engine and dynamics it would work for them this time around.
Please talk about the turbo lag and driving in the city traffic issues, nobody told even in the Taigun and Kushaq review, the 1.0 takes some time for spooling the Turbo which in get go traffic is a bit much

Really great car. Great review as well! I just can’t digest that huge rear bumper that makes it look back-heavy. I’m definitely not used to seeing Euro cars look back heavy.

its a good attempt but here is whats sad:
No hood damping
Unfinished carpets areas in boot
Small features take an exit from Rapid/Vento
Plastic Rattling was experienced by other journalist in slavia
Rear under thigh support was okayish
3 cylinder vibration
A better analog dial with a larger mid would had made more sense than a small digital cockpit
i my self owe one skoda and those version are gold dust and even though the features were less but quality in small areas was not compromised

Very well engineered car, insulation could have been better though. Salvia appears to be a cheaper VW similar to Santana model strategy in China.
Whenever a model of any company whether Ford Ecosport or Suzuki Baleno or Hyundai Verna has offered a 1.0 litre Turbo and 1.5 litre NA engine options the 1.5 MA has always been the one which was preferred by the public. What makes u think that here the story will be any different?

Only thing I hate about it is the space between C pillar and rear-end is almost similar to space between A pillar and front-end.
Longer hood would have made this car look much nicer. Design is awesome but proportions seems off, perhaps this is accentuated because of high ground clearance.
But I hope I change my mind once I see it in person.
Edit: I am also not liking huge spaced wheel arches.
I am kinda disappointed with design. I know I maybe criticised for saying this but I still find Verna to be a better looking car.

Amazing car
Sedans are ditched by people just because of the worst roads and notorious speed humps which can break most sedans.. if these are fixed, i am sure people will still prefer a sedan.
Slavia vs Rapid is something that needs to be shown soon.

@@Moonlight-hq3gi first of all the Skoda suspension are not soft, They usually have hard setup due to which they feel harsh during low speeds but during high speeds they are much more stable.
Regarding the cornering, The vehicle was carrying quite a high speed on a tight corner. Even at that speed you see can how the car stays still and carries forward.

@@Moonlight-hq3gi I never said its stiff, Its suspension is hard compared to other brand's setup.
Obviously RAPID suspension was different and even the chassis and Dimension was not the same. RAPID was smaller and has less ground clearance.
It wont be fair to compare these two cars as Slavia is not its new gen model. Instead its all new product with different chassis.
Even with that high ground clearance Slavia is taking corners pretty well.
