STORYLINE:
At least two people have been killed and several others injured in a second day of student rioting in the East Timorese capital Dili.
Witnesses said one of the dead was a 16-year-old student who had been shot in the head.
President Xanana Gusmao arrived at the scene of the riots on Wednesday, which were centred outside the National Police Headquarters, to try and restore order. But the fighting carried on and he was escorted inside the building.
On Tuesday police fired tear gas to disperse about 500 high school students who had taken to the streets of the capital.
The protesters threw rocks at police and soldiers and set two motorcycles on fire in a soccer field near Dili's parliament building.
The protests, the most bloody since the poverty-stricken country became independent, were sparked by the recent arrest of a student from a school in the city. Police say the boy was suspected of gang violence.
East Timor became the world's newest nation in May after two years of UN administration following 24 years of violent Indonesian occupation.
