- Star of 'Billions,' Paul Giamatti, may have played a wine snob in the movies but in real life he's disappointed many sommeliers.

Giamatti strikes a wonderful balance between emotive and relaxed. It's charming.
Paul Giamatti; so likeable, you'll hate how likeable he is.
Likeable until you find out his dad is responsible for Pete rose not being in the hall of fame
@@sportjunkie5286 nope, still likable.
@@sportjunkie5286had nothing to do with him
Sideways is one of my all time favorites
"Did we just become best friends?"
"YUP!"
I'm gonna put my nutsack on yer drum set
I love that the sci-fi literature geek's secret handshake is just a normal handshake.
Mike Tython l
Sideways, John Adams and Billions are his three best works. Paul Giamatti is one of the best actors of his generation. He should have won an Oscar for Sideways.
I'd throw American Splendor and Private life in that mix
@@Freshlygrazed I was just gonna say AS before I scrolled down and saw your comment.
I agree. And he wasn't even NOMINATED. What a joke.
He could have taken the nomination for Johnny Depp or Clint Eastwood that year (DiCaprio should have won for The Aviator if you ask me, that performance was on another level) and Sideways is such a more entertaining movie than Million Dollar Baby, which is your typical emotionally manipulative, contrived Oscar bait downer
I made a list of authors Colbert had mentioned if anyone's interested:
1. Philip K Dick
2. Harlan Ellison
3. Larry Niven
4. Isaac Asimov
5. Robert A. Heinlein, or Vineland (by Thomas Pynchon) (thanks Jeffrey Pappas)
6. Henry Kuttner
7. L. Sprague de Camp (thanks Bart Alder)
8. Jack Vance
9. John W. Campbell
10. Cordwainer Smith (Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger)
Petriko thought he said Vineland, referring to Pynchon.
L. Sprague de Camp is your number 7
I came here hoping to find his author list, thanks so much!!
Thanks for the list man!... I was hoping somebody could make a list of the writers... I watched this interview months ago and I got hooked when Stephen started to mention them.. Mr. Giamatti's reaction is priceless.
thanks again man, greetings from Lima, Perú.
Literally came here for this list. Thanks Based Archivist :D !
That feel when you try to force an awkward sports conversation with a guy you don't know that well because you're trying to tone down your nerdiness and it's the socially acceptable thing to do but then he's also a huge nerd and you're so relieved
His dad was the commissioner of baseball so I think he was playing it down.....
That unintelligible comment
His father was the frigging Commissioner of Major League Baseball....I would have pursued that a bit, but maybe that is a "no go" topic for him?
Dude, did Stephen just geek the fuck out or what! GLORIOUS!!!!!!
"Sideways" is such a great movie. It's like a more relaxed "The Hangover," but with wine instead of hard drugs and prostitutes.
He is also in Hangover, isn't he?
That's 10 clicks, Jackson!
Far better than The Hangover; real depth beneath the comedy, not just screaming douchebags.
That's not saying much of anything at all. I really didn't like sideways. I found it boring and grating, but it was leagues better than the trash that was The Hangover.
Sideways is my all-time favorite movie. I honestly believe it is a perfectly-crafted movie in every single aspect.
His role in Billions is just brilliant. Great acting.
I'M NOT DRINKING FUCKING MERLOT!!!
GIGAtyWING yesssssss
I love how genuinly excited he gets
Me too! When he snapped his head back on the Hamilton bit, I died! 🤣😂🤣😂
EXACTLY ♥️
I still get goosebumps thinking of Giamatti's role as John Adams. That series was incredible!
Truly!
@@thatsalittlebassist I thought it was slow
@@frankonolfi1966 it was meant to be slow and psychological
@@axelv7169 Absolutely but I need some action too, otherwise ZZZZZZZZZ
@@frankonolfi1966 if you had read the biography on which the series was based you'd undoubtedly have been able to relish the psychological rather than military/physical action that carried it.
I love Paul Giamatti's voice.
Foodie Thinker love your picture. Such a cute cat!
Now that was a nerdgasm if I ever saw one
the first one I ever saw hhhh I now know what itès called. all the others are just faking, this was real XD
Paul was done but Stephen kept on going. "Stop stop stop!"
What you'd expect from a Yale man (BA, MFA)? Northwestern University ain't too shabby, either (Colbert).
When you nut and she still sucking
Garden-Variety UA-cam User Furthermore, Paul's dad was the Yale President and Stephen's dad was the Yale Dean of Medical Education
Who knows how this interview would have ended up if Stephen didn't ask Paul what he likes to read -- that changed everything. It was an awkward start, but Paul was genuinely impressed with Stephen's knowledge. It's like the time Susan Boyle walked out on stage -- luke warm reception and when she started to sing everything changed.
Agreed. Stephen should ask every one of his guest what they like to read.
He's a great actor, I would watch anything he's in, jus sayin
Stephen is so well read, holy shit
These guys are couple of Ivy grads; Giamatti - Yale (BA, MFA), Colbert - Northwestern. If they seem smart, well - it's probably because they are. :)
The Democrats aren't the ones lying their asses off day-to-day and dismantling the country. That's the Republicans. Hence why their the targets of jokes.
Atheist Nice are you an atheist? if so, why the hell would you support Republicans?
EQ-smoove lol fuck off dude
Atheist Nice probably not
this was an interview.....!this was a real interview!!
Not only LOTR but a hard sci fi novel expert as well? Damn Stephen, could you be any more awesome!?!
Stephen's reading list sounds like mine both now and when I was a kid... I knew he was well-read, but DAMN!
STRANGERS WITH CANDY!
one day when this corrupt US system will be over, you will see the role of this type of journalist in the propaganda and how "awesome" they really were. Just notice how they are all engaged in the anti-Russian propaganda, which is not anti-Trump (after all he gave them a bigger sanctions) but anti-Russia
Paul Giamatti in my eyes one of the most undervalued Actors on the Planet he killed every role i ever saw him i in
His small role in Saving Private Ryan was a good one. He's the soldier that knocks down the wall during the sniper in the city scene and reveals all the Germans inside. Crazy scene.
I think we just witnessed two people becoming best friends
I love how much of a nerd Stephen is. So damn dreamy
I'm a straight guy, but the instant Colbert brought up *Harlan Ellison* I would have said "TAKE ME NOW!" Then Niven came up...
Adam Winkelmann Harlan is The Man !!!
desertblitzkrieg Damn right.
LOOOVEEEEEE when he gets all nerdy !!!
Nena Heoz They both are amazing.
Paul Giamatti, the most underrated actor since Hulk Hogan.
Terry Bollea
They're so adorable geeking out over books.
This whole clip is my everything. It speaks to my inner sci-fi fan with a bullhorn and makes my toes curl.
I could go on and on about how great Paul Giamatti is ... his performance in The Illusionist was just superb (particularly his deeper voice to hint at the Austrian tone), but also, those of you Sideways fans should listen to the commentary track with him and Thomas Haden Church, it's just awesome and so funny.
WhatisASMR Totally agree, the commentary is freakin hilarious!!
Thanks for the hint. Side ways, it's on my list of 5 favorite movies . Just looked at it last week. And like a good wine, it seams to gets better the older it gets.
I'll look at the commentary track next.
" who's getting married? ...." " do you need money? " to be continued ...
Giamatti is a natural... brilliant and magnetic actor.👏👏👏
I can't wait for the next season of Billions..I love Paul in this show, opposite the truly excellent Damian. Paul is such a likeable guy and Stephen Colbert is one of my fave talk show hosts....
Andy Bee
I'd like him better if he didn't have to make everything about Trump. I respect his views, but stay on topic and stop pushing your political soap box, Steve.
Sideways is such a freekin amazing film. So funny on so many levels.
and its smart. somthing ur not!
Adam Goldstein after reading the sentence you typed, it’s clear you aren’t too bright either.
I liked Giametti as the villain in "Shoot 'em up"
I know him as that English king in 13century who got offed
I love Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti! shoot em up is one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies.
I started eating raw carrots all the time after that movie first came out haha , I know they don't really improve your eyesight that significantly but I still like em.
@@DonC23 I'm sure you know this but the reason why Clive Owen is snacking on carrots is because the director envisioned the main character as being a live action Bugs Bunny, oddly enough. He thought the movie had such a cartoonish vibe that it only made sense to have it be lead by an R rated Bugs!
@@jasonflay8818 I did not know that! thanks for the info! :)
I'd so much rather enjoy a glass of wine with this guy than "Miles"
Just don’t order any fucking Merlot
I loved Paul Giamatti in Saving Private Ryan.
How do I connect with this guy?? hmmmmmm.... Sports?? Nope. Push a litttle harder, something about flags, Next Politics?? some lost laws,Next! Interesting anecdotes?? not interesting enough next!! TV Shows?? Nope. Damn I give up. What the heck do you do? Science Fiction DING DING DING DING DING DING!!!!!!!!!! We have a winner!!!!!!!!
hahah, my thoughts exactly
And the audience is like 🤨🤨🤨. That was amazing. 🤣
you do realise this is all scripted rite?
beautifull post....
I AM NOT DRINKING ANY FUCKING MERLOT !!!
Mário Lopes don't give me anymore of your nega-downer bullshit!
Willow Tree xD
Paul G. is such a convincing actor, and master of facial gestures,
imo!😃
Glad to see Paul looking healthier than ever. Speaking of sports, Paul's dad was a former commissioner of Major League Baseball.
I've always been impressed with Paul Giamatti as an actor, but it's super cool to learn what science fiction fans he and Colbert are.
"Are you a sports guy?"
Stephen, his dad was the Commissioner of Major League Baseball.
yeah his father was only commissioner for 5 mths, so sad.
I am here for Paul Giamatti, but must go SIDEWAYS on a side note and say...our Nats are finally DEFENDING WORLD SERIES CHAMPS!
"The only enemy more dangerous than a man with unlimited resources is one with nothing to lose." Billions Season 2 Baby Letsgo!!
"Did we just become best friends? Yup."
Paul Giamatti is ADORABLE!
Side ways, it's on my list of 5 favorite movies . Just looked at it last week. And like a good wine, it seams to get better the older it gets.

" who's getting married? ...." " do you need money? " to be continued ...
I absolutely loved this interview!! 😂❤ TOO GOOD! 😂❤
Sideways was incredible. Really incredible. The book is quite good as well!
so glad Mr. Giamatti mentioned one of my favorite writers, Cordwainer Smith!
wow what a revelation it is when both guys find out they're both huge scifi books fans
Paul Is so down to earth and they mention terrific authors!!
I liked Giamatti in American Splendor ^_^
I have never seen two people bond so quickly in my life omg
I love the genuine conversations! So great!
one of the most wonder exchanges on an interview, loved the sc-fi book talk
Awww, they have a LOT in common! If I were ever a celeb, I'd be a V chill/low-drama one like Paul Giamatti.
Paul seems a delightful personality, always has.
I always think of him in "Lady in the Water".
DK Dempcey Knight DK 100% my favortie Giamatti movie. Weird, ik, but i found it sooo amazing.
I could be 100% wrong, but I sense the character he plays in "Lady in the Water" reflects a lot of his own personality. He is not a "Hottie", and he is getting up there in age however, his personality, mannerisms, etc., make him extremely handsome to me =) Go's to show how much attitude will carry one.
Science fiction nerds Paul Giamatti and Stephen Colbert just became best friends during this interview. hahaha
One of my favorite actors. Him and the farmers commercial guy
I first saw Paul in "Private parts" with Howard Stern, great funny movie, I've seen it like 20 times.
it’s refreshing to hear a conversation between people who actually still exercise their big brains by reading
How does one not like Paul Giamatti? He is like a nice guy you meet at a ball game, or at the gas station. I should note that he is an excellent actor and I try to watch everything he acts in. And I love readers ... and he is one. Of course, he only has two names which is much cooler than three named celebrities...whom I always feel it is too much information when they are introduced.
Loved him in Duets! Great guy!
He’s honestly a living legend
The last scene in Private Parts was great when he talks about Stern.
Paul "Pinot Noir" Giamatti is an amazing actor. He would have been a Perfect "George" in Seinfeld. Nobody "Blows His Stack" better than Paul.
Brilliant Actor, and a sci fin fan too, good to know.,
Cam here for a wine list, I left with a great reading list!
Genius: "I like watching hockey." = THE distraction of All Distractions, because Paul's father was the President of the National League in 1986, then Commissioner of Baseball until his death in 1989. Here, they never even said the word "baseball." ;-)
He is a fantastic guy and actor !Best wishes for him !
His dad was the commissioner of the MLB and his favorite sport to watch is hockey lol
Paul Giamatti was also great in "Cinderella Man"
Billions is an awesome show. He's good at his character. Ruthless individual, district attorney Buck Roades. love it..
Ahh ha ha ha... Just goes to show ya, you can't Out Nerd Stephen Colbert!!
Loved this guy since "American Splendour"!
PG seems like such a genuinely good guy.
Paul Giamatti got robbed of a 2005 Golden Globe win for Best Actor (Comedy/Musical).
Garden-Variety UA-cam User Agreed!
i've done that. got halfway thru shaving and just said "looks good i'm done"
Paul Giamatti's plumber knows me by name!
Legend........ Still pissed he didn't get an Oscar for SIDEWAYS
Absolute genius, Paul Giamati. Except wine. Not about wine.
Stephen Colbert's right ear deserves a show of its own. ❤
Paul Giamatti is essentially what I would be like on a celebrity talk show.
Paul's dad was the commissioner of MLB (Bart Giamatti).
They're gonna be besties nowwwwwwww
Merlot Guy: I'll watch the super bowl but if ANYONE brings a bottle of Merlot... I'm out of there....
I love that Paul is as taken by his own work as we are
Stephen Colbert seems perpetually excited to be an adult... he's got such a "Dad, look at me. Look at me. I'm the Dad now!" vibe. We get it dude, you're a master of your own version of whatever you believe intelligence and morality is. You were much better off staying in character forever.
Love Giamatti getting in that dig on Heinlein. I didn't hear them mention Ursula Le Guin though did I? That's too bad, she's fantastic.
The John Adams miniseries is really excellent. It's the one fancy DVD box set I own.
Does Colbert have a photographic memory?
Nice to see Marty Wolf back in Hollywood.
everytime I see Giamatti I just remember "this guy did lady in the water"
My Top 3 Paul Giamatti's Best Roles
1st Aleksei Sytsevich
2nd Stan Beals
3rd Academy Teacher
Paul, how do you stay so awesome? I MUST KNOW YOUR
He's just a regular guy lol I love it.
I am jacked about Billions coming back! Great show.
loved him as the Rhino in the amazing spiderman 2. his best role ever... !!!1!
Hey Stephen, how about getting some of those sci-fi writers on the show? It would be a nice break from all the movie stars.
I was shocked that there was even a clip existing without anyone dropping the f-bomb. Then again he had to compensate that in his interview
Woah they just geeked out for a minute there! :D
