And he finally got the opportunity to repay Johnny in kind at The Las Vegas International in 1969 during a live performance when he did an imitation of Johnny Cash. Not only do I get to hear Elvis, and other great artists, but I get to hear your reactions - funny, sad and every other description. As for who Elvis was rap battling... Hmmm... Well I do know Elvis & Johnny Cash had a back and forth thing going back in the day.
There was a mutual respect between then, two guys just picking at each other for a laugh.
Of course to hear June Carter Cash tell it, Johnny was always just a little bit jealous of Elvis.
She toured with Elvis back in the 1950's. She knew Elvis before she had even heard of Johnny Cash. In fact, it was Elvis that brought Johnny Cash to June Carter's attention.
She noticed Elvis was practicing a different way of singing and she asked him why he was doing it like that and Elvis told her about Johnny Cash and she was like, "Who?" And Elvis told her, "Johnny Cash. He's a singer who got signed onto Sun Records just like I did."
And June said, "I've never heard of him."
To which Elvis replied, "Oh, the whole world is gonna know who Johnny Cash is."
And too June Carter said that her first husband always suspected that she had had an affair with Elvis. But she said she didn't. They divorced (I'm sure they had their own separate marital problems that each felt they couldn't work out; I don't know much about June Carter's first marriage and anyway a couple's business is a couple's private business).
It was only later when June Carter's son wrote a book that he admitted his Mom told him his Dad was always a little jealous of Elvis and he asked her why and she said, "Well, honey, it was Elvis. He was so handsome. I always wondered what would have happened if..." June & Johnny's son said that when his mother revealed that to him she had this glint in her eyes.
Now June Carter absolutely loved Johnny. No doubt about that.
So now. Go back to 1958. Johnny Cash does a funny imitation of Elvis on national tv. Elvis is at that point in the army. But don't think he didn't hear about it. He may have even watched it. Who knows.
So Elvis bided his time. And he finally got the opportunity to repay Johnny in kind at The Las Vegas International in 1969 during a live performance when he did an imitation of Johnny Cash. Unfortunately Elvis imitation was never filmed BUT it was recorded.
I'll try to provide the link to the video below. Elvis's ad- lib lyrics to a Johnny Cash classic melody is pretty naughty & hysterical. I love it personally + I think Elvis's imitation of Johnny Cash is dead effing on.

If they think something isn't exactly how they want Elvis to be presented they'll slam it. That's why many of them boycotted the Elvis movie even though Lisa Marie and the Presley estate were enthused.
