Guitar Lesson: How To Play Cherub Rock by Smashing Pumpkins + Fulltone '70-BC Fuzz Pedal Demo!

- New toys are always fun. This Fulltone '70-BC Fuzz Pedal is on loan from a friend. I totally promise I'll give it back ;) Anyway, Cherub Rock by Smashing Pumpkins rock is great fun to play. Maybe not as fun as Fraggle Rock, but I don't think the fuzz pedal would have been exactly apropo for that kind of fun...

Another magnificent selection! Solo forthcoming? (Hint: yes)
why thank you Doug :)
I have spent the last year trying to figure out how to play this song, and even though I recently did, it amazes me because your video is the only one that has everything spot on! I’ve had to go to multiple videos and weed out the wrong parts but yours is perfect. I had to send it to a friend so he can learn James’s part. Thanks for the tutorial
that's a really nice compliment - thank you for that Joseph :)
best of the best, loving the break down on the different roles in such a short time, many thanks
many welcomes yoni :)
Ryan, you're so good. I've been watching you a couple years. Back in the day, I messaged you about doing "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns" on ukulele. Your lessons/tutorials are so awesome. Recently, I was looking up tutorials for "Cherub Rock" by other people. Pretty much all of them seemed needlessly complicated (detuning all strings a half step) and just a little off. And they concentrated on both parts, James' and Billy's guitars, rather than just doing a solo guitar that would work for one person. Great job, bro.
thanks bro!
God I love this song! Thanks for doing it so I can jam along.
rock on Darin!
It's starting to come together. Thanks for the awesome tutorial. And thanks again!!!! Subscribed :)
welcome to the party!
Thanks Ryan, you rule! Gonna get started learning this one today
woo hoo! cheers Ryan :)
My favorite sp song
good choice buddy
Now you have to teach us the solo. Great song and great lesson btw!
thanks so much BM :)
The font in your thumbnails makes me think of safaris
well then I hope you like safaris!
Someone said not good on acoustic but I think great at the campfire! Billy has numerous versions playing acoustic. The fuzz is Cherub Rock no doubt, but pretty fun on acoustic
yep - the acoustic version is this but on an acoustic. works great IMO
More Pumpkins, more plz:D
def!
Awesome. Thanks. Need to get my S (we have community guidelines, so the 's' stands for stuff) together and try it out.
sushi?
Can you do a guitar lesson for Cherub Rock’s guitar solo, please?
Great demo, thanks👍
my pleasure TJ :)
Great lesson! You really put this song together for me. Thank you! I subscribed.
welcome to the party Ed!
@@RyanLendt Ha! Thank you. 😊
Could you teach us What you give-Tesla. I think it would be a great lesson.
thanks for the idea J :)
The fact that you take the time to break down the very absolute beginning is what makes you leagues above the rest. You're awesome!
you're the best Ashlee :)
I know cherub has a biblical reference, but I’ve always imagined the Oompa Loompas (the 1970’s version) jamming to this tune and you decided to wear the Oompa shirt for this video! Coincidence? I think not. Thanks Ryan.
I'm always thinking of your oompa loompa obsession Kevin
Daaaaaamn nailed it mate :D Thank you!
thanks mate!
Ahh, perfect timing. New guitar day on Saturday. Can't wait to give this a go.. Not so great on acoustic lol. Well, unless chainsaw noise is ya thing.
Eric from the elephant show used to play the saw
Well, I looked that up. And now I feel sad that I missed out on that madness growing up. I'm from the uk. We had three channels when I was a kid, mostly showing utter dreck. 🧐🙃 Although rent-a-ghost was bonkers.
Great video!
thanks Z!
F n A!!
Thanks for the use of the pedal!
@@dougdevine27 Ryan was gracious enough to accept the shipment. I’m just stoked to have it used by a superstar!
too kind rhino - thanks for the fun I'll send it along shortly!
They hate shipping to us up here! Lol
have you filled out a customs form recently? It's unreal.
@@RyanLendt I bet!
Any reason you use pinky on octaves
personal preference
I love octave riffs. I might make a bumper sticker saying so. Good lesson btw.
I have a bumper sticker that says "I Brake For Turtles"
@@RyanLendt I've helped 3 turtles finish crossing the road this pass summer.
Thumbs up. You wanna borrow a looper pedal? (Oh, and the California Raisin looks lonely)
I shan't display CM until I clear a few things away and ask for your "supporter of the kermie cause" request. that is when the grand reveal will occur :)
Wonderful! Any advice on adding more liked videos? Seems my que is full....? And I've only just begun to learn
I don't think I understand the question madman - but thanks!
@@RyanLendt I didn't word that very well! When you smash the "thumbs up" it turns blue and says "added to liked videos" and compiles them in a library you can pull up and enjoy again....I can no longer turn the thumb blue. I looked and I have 5000 videos in that library so I may have to learn how to make room in there. ( I thought you might know a tip on how to do that) keep up the great channel buddy!!
How many telecasters do you have?
two
@@RyanLendt I love your videos by the way
Nice lesson, thank you Ryan. Why not a AC⚡️DC song for next time 😀
yeah why haven't I done an ACDC song yet!
The Bible is often misquoted that on the 4th day God created Moon, Sun, and stars but in all actuality it was Octave chords, just a whole day of the heavens rocking octaves. They need to release that book with proper translation.
that's the king clapton edition
If you’re willing to receive packages for Canadians .... you’d save me a fortune in 10C shipping 😂
I was just thinking about asking him for a favour myself. I wouldn’t expect him to do it for nothing though , I’d be more then happy to throw in a little something for Ryan being so awesome. I know you’re listening Ryan , I think I want that same pedal , what do you say ?
Ya dude, you may have a side gig for us Canadians. .lol
hahahaha my email is ryanlendt@gmail.com. generally happy to help though I'm generally pretty slow at stuff. if you're ok with that i'm ok with that
@@RyanLendt awesome , thanks Ryan.
@@RyanLendt so where did he order that pedal from ?
Love, Hate, Love solo! AIC

I’ve been playing it for years but you taught me some new things that I need to fix. Thanks!
woo hoo! I hope you have a fruitful journey to the South, Austin.
4:34 cherub rock into better caul Saul
I don't know if it's just me but everytime I start to learn a song, I find it on Ryan's channel :p. Just this time I searched for it the day before you post and was like "Noooooo, there's none, and I'm not gonna learn anything that is not from Ryan! I will wait even if it takes years!" , and then you posted it! X) Thanks, you're a magician.
you're real kind Val - thank you for being on the other end :)
Any fuzz makes this tune sound more authentic, but the Electroharmonix big muff Pi definitely has a different tone than that Fulltone, here. Not bitching! Keep up the good work!
Oh: This one definitely warrants a campfire version.
yes campfire!
There is an acoustic version from some mtv thing in 93. The aeroplane flies high 5 disc set also has a few other songs done acoustic. Good stuff.
thanks for the idea gents :)
Have you ever considered a lesson for Lazy Eye by the Silversun Pickups? Reminiscent of early Pumpkins.
that's a darn good idea, and you're darn right
I met Billy Corgan..he's a dick lol but siamese and melancholy are two of the best albums of all time. Good job on the song
He's my good friend's idol - he, too, met BC after hanging out for hours and hours after a show, at which point billy came out and berated him and the dozen or so others for waiting around for him and essentially calling them the scum of the earth. That is my second hand anecdote to support your first hand one.
What a gonna do. Ego's definitely in his driver seat lol he's a songwriting genius tho. I'll give him that
Oh...by the way..I'm a big fan of ur video's. I've been watchin well over a year. I'm a huge PJ fan...I've seen them at least 6 times....last one being at MSG. Keep up the good work. I enjoy ur campfire versions of songs
Thank you bud
cheers bud
Thanks for taking the time for this song , that’s probably my best SP song ... your guitar sounds good , I don’t know if I missed it but is this song in standard tuning ?
Yes it’s in standard tuning.
Nah, this tune is in Eb like most everything else on siamese dream
I didn't think I was in Eb - though I didn't check! uh oh...wait i haven't retuned my guitar since hold on... ok it's in standard!
So this song is in Eb tuning ?
@@jakebsowders357 standard tuning. At least on the album I play with on Spotify is in standard tuning.
Really fantastic lesson, easy to follow and understand, thanks!!!
cheers!
Ur slightly out of tune...great video, thanx dude
thanks dude
Hey thanks for the song and the shoutout
my pleasure MK :)
Billy mutes with his thumb on this song. I have been struggling with this song for a while as the timing is tricky - especially if you want to sing at same time. Just wanted to put this out there as nearly every tutorial I have seen is showing the mute with index finger. Once I switched to thumb muting this song became MUCH easier for me to wail on - and focus on singing.
that's all well and good - I'm not a thumb guy :)
I still remember the all encompassing feeling I had when I first heard this song like an ethereal blanket. Awesome lesson Ryan, more Siamese Dream please!
it's growing on me too!
This time you got me to chuckle at 'I just said doo doo'.
i swear that wasn't planned :)
Wish you had the solo, I’m having a hard time figuring it out by ear, there’s a lot of noise he does with the guitar which makes it hard to pin point what Billy is playing. I still enjoyed the lesson though.
A great lesson as usual Ryan. I have a hang up about UA-cam now counting down the time on vids as opposed to letting you know the actual count of the song. Anywho; this is such rock and it was Mom's favourite song that we jammed to on Christmas sing song (believe it or not!) in lovely Limerick, Ireland!
Your irish mom had impeccable taste :)
Maaaate request done and a shout out. You are the man Ryan. I will be giving this a hoon today.
Next request Shihad- Home Again 😂😂😂🤞
yeehaw! good luck on your hoon AM :)
I think it's been a while since we've done a Chris Cornell song, so can i ask a lesson on Before We Disappear ? Thx Ryan u are the best ;)
thanks for that and thanks for the cc request billy!
Add Kowboy to the Cherub Rock list 👌
i keep that list in the back of my underwear drawer and only take it out when my mom isn't home
That intro kicks ass and I love to play it on my acoustic, and I couldn't find a tutorial without explanation like this. Thanks for the tutorial once again, Ryan!
One question tho, how to get comfortable by playing it with your two fingers up? I still can't figure out how to make it comfortable.
cheers FT thank you for that and I'm glad that was helpful :) time, practice, patience - as with all things.
On the chords you use at 4:15 are you still muting the high E, B, and D strings?
Another classic. Great stuff thanks Ryan👍
thanks goose! also - Still!?!
@@RyanLendt Yes indeed my good man. These classics are making me thirsty for more🍺
