Should the canvas size be your paper size?

Yes, I have the canvas size in the DTF software the same size as my paper size.

My first print, (I just got my machine) has a black blotch in the middle. Is this normal? Is my transfer ruined now?

It is not normal to have a black blotch in the middle and the transfer is likely unusable. I have had an occasional bit of black ink show up on my prints but not very often. Did you try to print a second time and, if so, how did it turn out?

@@ritaurbina8281 Is your printer a ProColored printer? If so, it's inconvenient timing if you live in the US, but their Skype help has been very good to work with for me.
