Borneo Travel Guide

- As a kid, I always envisioned Borneo as a land of adventure and obscurity; a place where one can experience a trek up a wild river similar to the tales of David Livingstone. Imagination and reality seldom coincide, so I venture to the state of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo in search of a self-indulgent fantasy.

Should I have just visited Sarawak instead?...
trust me, west borneo is better!
I don't think so. I think west Borneo has got a bit of everything and Sarawak is actually more dense.
If you like to visit museum, historical buildings and cave... yes..
Sarawak and Kuching is definitely far better and less touristy! Went to Sabah and definitely had all the feelings you had but planning my third trip to Sarawak because I can't get enough.
Sarawak yess..
This video has a good insight however, cheer up man your in a beautiful part of the world and extremely lucky to have been there, travels what u make it and you are barely scratching the surface, go back go deeper, get wild, dive in and smile
I dont necessarily adhere to the "Stay Positive" mantra and I always say - I'm not a pessimist, just a no nonsense realist. Then again I often find myself in the company of tourists who go on and on, nagging and whining about everything from the conditions (too hot, too humid, too many insects, bathwater too cold...etc.) to how their expectations about the whole trip led to a huge letdown. 'I thought it would be more like... I never thought it would be like this... I was hoping... I should've went there instead...' 😒 Every friggin' time, there's always gonna be "that guy" the deprecating dandy in the group, at the resort, on the boat, in the restaurant. Complaining, sulking... Brooding.
Dude easily one of the best channels on youtube. I love your style of travel guide, super direct, honest and a hint of humor.
I'm glad you appreciate my style, Lyle!
wicked video mate. I was in Borneo and Kota kinabalu a few years back. Motorbiked as much as i could of the island. It was absolutley stunning! The food and wildlife were unreal. Your pretty negative about a lot of stuff though 😅😅
no kidding, hes not Bourdain
Im so loving this type of vlog.. honest review.. this is what we need! ❤❤❤
I haven't even gone a quarter of the way through your video and I gotta tell you... fantastic work my man! Keep going, this is the kind of quality material even most professional channels fail to achieve.
your honesty is a virtue more people on youtube should have
Keep killing it! Love the vibes in the jungle too
Hey mate, thank you from Australia 🇦🇺 I know this video isn’t recent, but this is an example of how to portray a travel experience. It maybe didn’t work for you but you leave it open for others to make their own decisions. The food market (makanan Pasar) looked a bit sad! But that sunset OMG. Thanks again ... during these difficult times you are really helping to meet the needs of travel geeks. 🙏🏻❤️
Thank you so much, Brad. I grew up on travel shows that had more depth to them and I appreciate anyone that can understand the narrative of the episode. Borneo wasn't for me, but it could be for someone else; it's just my job to document what I felt, tell my story and you make your own decision.

Eek! Fanboy is fanning 😆
Hey, we had a trip planned for Malta in October 2020. A looong way from Australia, and it ain’t gonna happen this year. Looking forward to watching your video to see what we can anticipate for (hopefully) 2021 ☺️
This is probably your best episode. Insane cinematography and pacing. Well done 👏🏻
Probably one of your best written episodes so far. Good job buddy!!
your narration for your travel vlogs is easily some of the best out there. It separates your work from the countless of travel videos here in youtube. I love your honesty served with a poetic cadence and direction. Keep it up, Mitchell! Thank you for these amazing videos. ^_^
Uno IV thank you for the kind words and for recognizing why makes this channel different. These types of comments are always my favorites to read 💪🏻
The cinematography, narrating, editing and the quality of your videos deserves more subscribers dude.. Better than some TV travel programs 💯
Always the highest compliment 🙏🏼
Haha your commentary about the cattle herding island tour was spot on. That sunset was gorgeous, though.
You're really good at this! I started watching you last week on a video about Seattle and your stuff looks very professional and you're a great narrator. Keep it up!
Many thanks and welcome to the channel
This is an amazing video, hopefully visiting here later this year. Your channel deserve a lot more views!
Thank you much and enjoy it!
You have a wonderful way of shooting and editing videos. Great stuff.
On The Go With AC thank you for appreciating the work!
Dude your videos make me wanna travel!
Great photography and I love your no BS style
You have beat me to a lifelong dream, salud and fair travels to you man. Beautifully done content as well.
Thank you, Drew. I'm glad you appreciate the content and hopefully you too will be traveling the world and taking in all it's strange corners!
Enjoyed this one! i’m off for a 3 week trip to borneo in april, going to be spending a week or so staying with a local village, super hyped!
Sounds like what I should’ve done
As usual a beautiful video and your words are so true 😎😎😎🙏🙏🙏.
Amazing sunset
Just came across this channel today, nice job on the videos man! Well made!
Thank you!
This is giving me Bourdain vibes... RIP
I'm sorry if it has already been covered by you, I've not watched the video fully, but how did you make the choice to visit Malaysian Borneo over Indonesian Borneo (Kalimantan)?
Well, I was motivated by the fact that I had never been to Malaysia before and a few documentaries I'd seen on Malaysian Borneo.
Late to watch this but i have to say, you need to come back haha there are way interesting places here in Sabah other than the boring islands in KK. Pretty and fun islands are further up north of Sabah like in Kota Belud and Kudat. Semporna has a few awesome islands too. Do more research when you plan to come to Sabah and make some friends with the locals! Get yourself someone to bring you around!
Hope you'll come back for more adventures!
We absolutely loved Borneo! It looks like you were a bit luckier with the weather than we were 😂 Rained a lot while we wwere there.
This was in mid-October, so maybe I just guessed correctly haha
Excellent narrative!
@mitchell, i did this trip to borneo malaysia already, same islands, orangutang but the best part was to dive in sipadan (near sephorna city). If some day you visit Brazil, consider to stay longer in Pantanal floods than in Amazon, since Pantanal is as green as amazon but it is an open area, where you can see many more animals, including tapirs, jaguars, blue macaws etc.
Keep it uo man. Loving jt
I swear I came watching having an idea with the way you write and structure your videos, but I did not expect to be laughing so much. Keep it up, man.
Glad to entertain you once more! Just being honest is all lol
Island of Borneo is a very beautiful island of the world ❤️
Bro, this vlog was genius. The editing was pro af, and the way you showed us Borneo was outstanding. I'm ready to travel there myself.
Did you ever get around to it, mate?
I dug this video. Good honest review. I think there's something to be said about the difference of being a traveler and a tourist. Visiting a huge city like Tokyo with no game plan and just going about with other people living there, was really refreshing to me for some reason. I would like to visit someplace like this and probably just live for a week or so in the place you were at the beginning. If you can swing having a personal guide, this kinda worked well for me in China. While doing some tourist locations, it was nice to just take our time hiking all day around some places while you see the other tour groups rushing around. Thanks for making this video. I'll have to check out more of your work.
Well said! Every traveler and every experience is different depending on the nature of the trip, so I agree
Amazing journeyyyy
Good educational video . Very well made .
This is a really good video nice editing
Video wonderfull👍👏
amazing video
Loved this. And so true. Tourists are dumb sometimes 😊
Love the nature save the Earth.
Good educational travel video . My wife and have been to Borneo 3 times . It's a very good and natural travel destination. Thanks for the memories.
Damn, 3 times!
I'm from Philippines but live in Kk,well Borneo is good for adventure but your right scamm is everywhere😂.Anyway nice documentary very realistic!!!
Marissa Balloging No one wants to be scammed so it’s good to raise awareness. Thank you 🙏🏻
@@MitchellTravels true 👍
For Borneo island, one of popular place to visit of scuba diver is Sipadan, beauty place.
Loved the honesty. Was thinking of heading to Sandakan as I had envision myself being captivated by th rainforest/jungle but after this, not so much. 😂
Glad you liked it! It comes down to avoiding overpaying for a service that is not very personal. Maybe if you somehow manage to do it on your own, it would be more exciting probably even more expensive.
There are many affordable packages actually
Pls.. Dont hear a rumor from only one person that his travel not like the way he want it to be.. Plss do your research and ask more friends about sabah specially sandakan before you come and visit us here..
#nohurtfeelin
#ilovesabah
#mylovelysandakan
I think I want to go there now. Is it safe? I have a chef friend and his food blows me away so need to eat it.
It is indeed beautiful region. If you go again, do travel to Mulu National Park. Its amazing 😀
I do very much like your work by the way. I am glad you did not sugar coat this Vid...
I never do. Unlike other channels, I want people to know how I felt and not every place on Earth is amazing. That said, this is obviously subjective and all my personal opinions.
Love the narration...haha, quite the breath of fresh air.... ;-) The Probus monkey description was 🤣🤣
Lmao I mean, just look at that thing
That was nothing but short of amazing.
Hope you will grow and get the views that you deserve.
I can totally relate with "getting screwed on Boat Tours"
Been island touring in Thailand with a stop at Kho Phi Phi during Lunch time.
It was the most shallow experience ever. The tour had Lunch included, which meant we where lined up in a big hall and served mass produced spaghettis or something.
Usually Food in Thailand is like the most amazing thing ever, but this lunch was really poor in contrast.
Afterwards I went to explore the island. Shockingly I noticed multiple "Food Temples" that had the same procedure. Get tourists from boats in and serve them mass produced food in quick succession.
When arrived at the beach I glanced left and right and over the whole length all I could see where boats, one after another, only sparingly leaving space for swimmers.
It was like you described, small designated areas with nets where you can swim.
Experience felt really anticlimactic and heartless tbh.
Oof bringing back so many bad boat tour memories with that story there lol. Like, it all seems very bland, but hey; different stroke for different folks I guess.
Some say you sound negative, but I can tell you I would experience it all the same way as you did. I dont appreciate being herded around with a flock of other tourists, or over priced food and accomodation as if charging more makes it worth more. I have been humming and hawing over Borneo for years, and I think you just made up my mind for me
awesome work man. been travelling to asia for about 30 times, and remember the remote places I went to. Difficult to find them these days. Maybe you should go to Raja Ampat before it"s too late.this place is heaven.
Hey listen, I got so much more Asia to discover to be at your level
I knew I had to subscribe when you were talking about Instagramers editing out 50 snorkelers 😂
I mean I’m just speaking the truth 😂. Welcome!
@@MitchellTravels ..what is your Instagram Bro and warm greeting from me in Indramayu, West Java, Indonesia🇮🇩
6:52 The color is amazing
LOVE
Going to Borneo for 3.5 weeks next month for my honeymoon. So damn excited and videos like this only whet the appetite even more.
So how was it??
@@MitchellTravels absolutely incredible. Hands down the best trip of both our lives.
Such a honest to the point video. Thank you
Some people hate that, but I say what I feel
Good honest take. No BS.
Never going to fake an experience brother
I've always wondered, who's taking your videos when you're walking?
His girl friend . I hope .
His girlfriend . I hope .
His boy friend, he's gay maybe
His slave maybe
His monkey that he brought with him
LOL! Perfect. Your description is priceless!
Many thanks haha
God that’s beautiful
My pet snake is from here! Borneo Short-Tail Python. Did you see any there?
Thanks for the honest take. Really helpful.
It's my job to be real with you guys
Borneo is the Island of the Thousand Rivers
Fuck I was so busy the day this premiered, man. I would have watched it sooner.. But I'm glad this is out now
That Jamba Juice comment had me rolling
Im here after Romania Bucharest. Your new subscriber from Kuala Lumpur 🇲🇾
Welcome!
Loved the video and your style of presenting...on the downside, I don't feel too keen to visit Borneo.
Thank you, Lars. I guess it depends on what you’re wanting to experience out of this island
Awesome video in amazing place 😍😘😃
Many thanks!
thanks a lot mitchell for showing us other world country i loved all your travel series but my special onevand my favourite one is israel tel aviv thanks a lot mitchell 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

👍👍👍
Borneo ,I am scared of monkeys.as it seldom seen in Philippines . And the milky brown water woah. Still great documentary
Looking forward for ur Philippine trip Mitchelle.
They're evil haha. Thanks for watching as usual!
That's why I'm scared 😅😅😅
I'm enjoying the snark 😂
The sunsets were awesome though...
That grilled squid looks delicious. I love street food when I travel around the world. One of the joys of travelling. ♡♡♡
I'm on that same boat, Alan!
Hello.. im former guide in sandakan.. sorry to say but i think you are actually wrong bosku... i saw your video.. and from my view.. you are going the wrong place and the wrong time.. im sorry if my english is not that good.. the best place to go in sabah is...
1. Mount of kinabalu
2.Kundasang
3.Hot poring spring
4. Selingan island ( where they help the turtle )
5. Sepilok
6.Gomantong Cave
7.Sukau
For sukau.. actually for me as a former guide the best view if you book a lodge near bilit village because the forest more dense and about the animal.. commonly you will see the monkey...and for the other animals.. yeah you are in the jungle not in the zoo.. so its only depends on luck ..
And last but not least
8.Danum Valley.. (for this yeah its quite expensive but... its not in vain )
Prince William and his wife Kate been to danum valley also.
I know you want to help other tourist.. but please. Sabah Borneo its not that bad if you had a good pick.
Again.. im so sorry if my english is not that good.. just that i love my place..
#PEACE
#ASSALAMUALAIKUM
Again im sorry if my english is not good..
#waalaikumsalam
Same here.. 8 years guide but now retired..
Wellsaid sabariah!
Mitchell is a rare kind of tourist for me. Very rare. No hurt feeling mitchell. 😁😁
Have a look for some beautuful images of Malaysian Borneo
@
I understand your frustration but mostly being if you travel outside of the "tourist zone" your safety is compromise, the tourist ransom kidnapping is very common in eastern part of sabah and trust me no tour company want to take those risk
although theres no one stopping you from traveling outside of the "tourist zone" and explore the island yourself but of course this is highly not recommended
Narrating clearly heavily influenced by Anthony Bourdain, not that is a bad thing. Good video enjoyed it.
👍
Never, ever skip the LUBE!
Point taken

amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! im speechless. selamat datang #VisitMalaysia2020
Thank you!

british and borneo
#dunhill
Fly to kinabalu take the public transport to Sandakan stopping off along the way take your time 4 weeks ,take a travel guide book only to avoid every thing in it and you will see the real borneo
If you poison somebody they def don't come back hahah
O r u eating by chopstick ? O.... i cannot and i don't want to practice because very hardly i practiced to eat by spoon and i think spoon is best technic than chopstick
Unfortunate. Never ran into the heart and left disappointed. You know you didn’t see Borneo by the fact that there are not blowpipes in this video
What a negative Nelly 😁
tells it how it is instead of pretend everything is great
You get it 👏🏻
почему на барнео флаг малазии
..and also the location of the continuing palm-oil driven massacres of our Orang brothers and sisters. A stark testament to the lack of our humanity, though we call ourselves human. An absolute preventable modern day travesty and utter disgrace. We will pay the price for their lives…snuffed out for less than nothing.
Mitch....I think u r at the wrong side of borneo. U need to be deep inside interior of the island. Far away from civilization. No hotels, no lodges, no boat ride. Just u and the jungle. That's where the adventure begin.
So we shouldn’t go to Borneo?? You seem so salty
If this guy was made of chocolate he would eat himself
That a$$
You’re a bit negative
