idk if you live in a colder climate, but how’s the lack of heated seats and steering wheel. Kind of something that keeps me away from buying it as a daily as I could just go with other performance cars that offer more
No way, you drove past my house! A couple tips if you're in the Stowe area again, if you went straight on the roundabout at 10:55 and took VT-109 for a few miles there is a great road on the right called Hogback Road with nice winding corners, little traffic and a pedestrian suspension bridge as part of the Long Trail which is a great place to take a break. Just repaved a couple years ago and much more fun than VT-15 where there's a 95% chance you'll get stuck behind a beater Subaru doing 10 under. Also if you turn left at the end of the road at 18:13 (Stagecoach RD) there is a fantastic coffee spot called The Roastery, owned by a couple of UA-camrs.
I just picked up my 2025 Type R a month ago - such an incredible car! I did the Type S ADS module and am working on a bit of sound deadening to reduce highway noise. Some Killmat and thin acoustic foam in the doors and trunk makes a world of difference for only ~10lb of extra weight.
Type S owner here. Super interested in hearing how the sound deadening came out. Got a couple rattles etc that I think could be remedied with some dynamat etc idk
The oil intervals are based on profitability for the dealer and manufacturer 100% Tedward! The BMW intervals are the best example of this haha. Always love the insight and proper knowledge from your videos.
im also at 18k miles in 7 months on my FL5 haha, as a commuter its great, but it also entices me to take the long and fun way home! have been able to meet so many great people because of it too!
Love this! My partner and I live out basically on the opposite side of the country but we come back and visit his family in VT for a couple weeks every year. I so look forward to it, it’s beautiful and we have a great time each year.
Just got 25' FL5 and i found my end game, coming from a MKV Supra. I needed a car that is convenient to carry people/storage, fun, reliable, and manual.
Thanks so much for always giving us these FL5 drive POVs! It carried me through my long wait the last 2 years-I finally picked mine up this past summer. It’s always been nice living vicariously through you in the ownership experience up until it became a reality. These videos are awesome, and I always appreciate your commentary!
Loving the footage on this one! With regard to the oil change intervals you discussed-my wife & I just got a 2024 Sienna and they say every 10k for oil changes. They acknowledge a break in period but don’t recommend changing the original oil till the 10k mark. I’m planning to maintain the car at the 5k mile interval so as to limit risk of long term engine issues. We plan to keep this car as long as possible.
I'm originally from NH, so those are my kind of roads! Great video. I have a 911 Turbo, C7 Z06, C8 Z06, but love driving my '24 CTR as a daily. It is such a great do everything type of car, especially as a hatchback. Yeah, 2 doors might be better for most, but I appreciate the capacity of the hatch. Happy motoring!
You inspired me to buy mine. I knew when a lot of the auto journalists were buying the Type-R that it was the right decision. Almost 5000 miles now in 9 months and I do have a few complains. Center cup holders get in the way and are too small on the door. Exhaust is too quiet. Gas tank is too small. Suspension is too stiff (fixed with the Type-S module). Pretty minor things for what is overall an extremely well rounded and impressive car.
Crazy that you mention Lenoir. I visited there for work merely days before that hurricane swept through the towns just west of there. Man, I hope that area is bouncing back as quickly as possible…
Vermont is a special kind of beautiful in the fall. I drove through upstate NY, Vermont and NH to Kennebunkport at the end of October this year. Hit Acadia National Park before I went home.
This might be what I've been missing. My '13 GTI was towards EOL a couple years back, and I went with the "adult" thing and bought a hybrid rav4. Man.. do I miss mobbing around NH backroads in my GTI. This video is making me reminisce.
I switched to a Honda Civic 8gen HB a couple of weeks ago from diesel Opel and my god how I enjoy that car! It's my second honda and I i don't think it's gonna be last
Really cozy drive, you inspired me to go out for one myself this upcoming weekend if it's dry and somewhat sunny at least. :) Turbo S doesn't really excite me in any way. Ofc my eyes are glued to it if I ever see one (it's a 911 at the end of the day), but no particular emotions follow, but whenever I think more about it, I realize this is such a good luxurious daily as long as you do your groceries regularly. Top down must've been so relaxing on that day.
Hey Tedward! Love your vids man you were the reason I got my 2023 Si and it's been amazing. I wanted to ask however if you would do a pov drive of refining driving a manual transmission. I learned about 4 years ago and so driving this has been easy however sometimes I find myself confused on what I can do better.
Ooo I'm earlier for once haha! I have to say I completely agree with you on that last bit about how stiffer (or lower for that matter) doesn't necessarily mean better handling, personally where I am I wouldn't want my cars any lower than they already are with the condition of some roads. My 90's coupe is running oem springs and shocks. I've just been using polybushes to improve the handling, the roll bars alone made a huge difference! I'd recommend to anyone to try swapping out some bushes, maybe a strut brace or two before immediately sticking on expensive coil-overs and lowering the car to the floor.
The rocks around 5:30 do get pretty scary! Luckily you somehow managed to go on a non-crowded day. But man I loved driving that road in my GLI a month or two ago. I'd be surprised to see people togue down that road, but lots of people do causal runs though it.
10:10 i bought a WRX that comes with “2 years” of included maintenance, but the fine print says like (3 intervals). I went through my 2 years of maintenance in about 6 months lol
I was on the Tail of the Dragon and there were some 'leaf peepers' down the road which is just SO dangerous considering the reputation that road has, had to bring my suburban from about 55-70 down to 20 because they were running across the road and stuff.
Awesome review Tom!😊 I'm at 11,000 on my Integra Type-S. I've owned it a little over a year. I love driving it, but now I feel I have to be cautious cos the summer tires don't last all that long.
Hey man love your videos! Saw your civic type r drive from a couple months ago n was really intrigued by garage 42. if you’re able could you make a tour video on the place n maybe talk a bit about how the business behind it works? i think that would be awesome especially for young enthusiasts like myself who are tryna find ways to make a good living in the car space n have the time n money to enjoy the cars we love! thanks man keep up the great work

When it comes to Honda transmissions 1-2 is a more cumbersome process when they’re cold. Having experience and own Hondas/Acura’s with B, F, K, J, and current K20C series. Once they’re warm you can blast through them. Also some Honda transmissions do better with GM synchromesh friction modifier manual transmission fluid. J series in particular for my TL type s
Feel that on the oil changes. I have a 23' Kia Soul. I put around 5,000 miles a month on it. So I change the oil every month/ 5,000 miles. I'd rather be safe then risk it, lol.
I suggest you check out a Dustball Rally GT. There's been a few New England ones and now the Adirondacks. Best way to discover some amazing driving roads in your own backyard.
Tend to agree with you in many cases about oil change intervals being weirdly long these days. My 2024 Jetta Sport calls for oil changes every 10,000 miles. I've been following this routine for as long as my oil changes are free at the dealer - when it's on me to do it myself, I'll probably lower that interval. With that said, I inspected my oil prior to taking it in and getting it changed and it looked much more healthy than the oil on the previous three cars I've owned, at lower intervals. It was definitely ready to be changed, but my old Silverado's oil looked worse at 6,000 miles than my VW's does at 10,000. I think there has been some advancements in engines and lubricants. Still though, I am generally skeptical of these long intervals in general. It seems to be working for me, but that's just one case with one car.
I am at 5k Miles, about to do my first oil change, lightly modified, about to tune it! I drive the FL5 daily, and it is the perfect daily performance car! I am leaning towards 2019 NSX or 2002 BNR34 R34 GTR for my weekend car. I am looking for a coup and ONLY JDM.
It's kind of funny to me how similar the fuel economy is on the type r and the b235r 9-5 aeros, I think the gearing might be a little taller on the 9-5, at 84mph it gets around 27-26.5 mpg, but around town, on 55mph speed limit roads, and on the average 77mph highway trips it's super similar
As there are more type R’s on the used market now I’d really like to go test drive one to see how it feels compared to my Si. The problems I anticipate are 1) no good way to carry a mountain bike (it won’t fit in the hatch, it can’t do a hitch bc of exhaust, and I won’t do a roof rack) 2) low MPG (relative to the Si) and low fuel range (
I'm getting the sticky steering on my '23 with shy of 9k miles. Not too bad in comfort but very noticeable in sport or +R. 🥲 Sounds like a spring problem though as it will be getting put away for winter.
I hope you got to hit VT-107 on the way up to Stowe (though coming from MA, you likely did not). It's the best driving road on the East Coast, without a doubt.
Your and Topher’s positive reviews were a big factor when buying my own Type R. For which I thank you! But I need help choosing an exhaust. What’s the hot setup for the FL5? AWE? Borla? Apexi? Tomei?
apexi best sounding imo not too loud but loud enough and still keeps valve if you want it you don't even need an exhaust lol, just deleting both resonators make a nice sound on these
Just traded in my 2016 gt350 for a 2025 civic type r and I have to agree u can’t hit a hard 1st to second. I kept julting the car because I’m so used to banging 1 to 2
I have a 2024 civic Sport Touring 6MT with just about 40 k miles now. I have the steering issue that the recall is for. As it is, I can’t go down the road without my steering locking up that causes me to make an aggressive input to get it to free. This is admittedly a big negative for me and makes me reconsider the entire purchase, despite how good everything else on the car is. The GTI’s or even Hundayis wouldn’t have these issues.
13:59 I agree, Honda should have made an N/A type R or maybe at least a version with 9k revving N/A K20/K24 with Type R chassis. Maybe call it an Si-R and would slot between the Si and the Type R.
12:18 my only real complaint with my 2024 Integra. I hope the newer infotainment systems that are coming with the refreshed models will be a drop-in upgrade for my car, because the car is otherwise perfect imo
I also came from an M3 to a Type R (FK8 in my case). Quite impressive driving cars if I must say. As much as I miss the sound of the s65, the lack of concern for things like rod bearings and the tremendous handling make me forget about it. How much better is the FL5 vs FK8?
Question for the next vid, Tom; now that you have the Lexus winter daily, replacing the 'harder' miles this car got the past few years, do you regret getting this? You have the M5 and the 911 for your 'fun' miles, would you not get the TypeR in hindsight? Or maybe getting something MORE fun for its limited usage?
5:15 while that's definitely the case in SoCal on stuff like angeles crest, i unfortunately dont think pedestrians/bikers have the same mindset up here in the Bay. seems like almost every saturday they'll hold their own Tour de France and expect everyone driving isn't there for the fun roads, i know we gotta share the road but these guys expect us all to bend over backwards😭😭
I have a 2024 Elantra N and I’m not gonna give you flack for saying the brakes in the CTR are better lol. It is factually correct! Both cars have their pros and cons but if you’re into cars you’ll look past the brand biases and realize that both cars are amazing in their own ways. Keep up the great work! Always so calming watching and listening to your drives and talks😊
Honestly only badge snobs wouldn't see the close performance qualities, but the FL5 should be on top from the +$10k MSRP over the Elantra N MSRP. I haven't tracked my 23 Elantra N so the brakes seem to be plenty, but I switched the wheel and tire combo for 18" Enkies and Continental Extreme Contact 02's.
@@importraceramimportraceam1756yup, agree! Without the price difference though I’d take the CTR any day. I would miss the exhaust on the an though haha
You aren’t a conspiracy theorist about oil change intervals. Oil has 7 main functions: Lubrication, Cooling, Cleaning, Sealing, Corrosion protection, Shock absorption, and Hydraulics. Considering all these factors it is safe to assume that a 5000 mile interval on full synthetic is best for the engine, after all you don't want to just throw contaminates back onto the engine constantly for 10,000 miles, especially if you want to prevent carbon buildup/sludge
you’re right about the oil changes. the other day I took my fl5 to get an oil change. it was at like 50% oil at 6k. the guy goes, only way you can get free oil change is if its at 15%. n I was like okay thats fine I’ll just pay. I think it ended up paying like $70. idk why they try to stretch the engine oil so much
@@alexp6409 im not too sure, I commute 40 min to work. I dont drive it hard on the highway because I want to have decent fuel efficiency but when im off the highway is when I like to have my fun and listen to the turbo blow off n all that fancy stuff. even now when im almost at 8k miles which is 2k more miles from the last oil change, oil life is only at 90%.
When I had this gen SI, it totally had the sticky steering thing. It was only at highway speeds it seemed like or when the steering wheel is mostly centered on a highway vs. driving around town and moving it a lot. Nice to know that was a recalled thing. It was pretty annoying. Not like get rid of the car annoying or anything but noticeable and annoying lol edit: PS: you make me miss the SI and the civic in general and there's an at MSRP type R at the dealer a few miles from me. Don't do this to me lol
Instinctively I want to say it needs more power but what I'm really wanting is a more exciting engine. I know (at least for the last while) that's not Honda's thing, it's chassis/handling, but I'm definitely an engine-first gal, much as I do love Honda.
the new type r's arent as sonorous as the old b and k series hondas, or even s2000 but they make up for it in dynamics and speed. personally with the pedal dance i have wheelspin up until 3rd so I'm good on power, but its still easy to tune these motors. I think they could and should work on the exhaust though, Integra type s fixes it
If you had to get rid of the Civic or the M5, which would go? Assume the Honda, but you never know. I also suspect your car was more fun for this drive than the guy in his Turbo S.
I swapped in the Integra’s module. Result: two very usable modes, Comfort and Sport. Before the swap, only Comfort mode was, well, comfortable. Plus R mode is still too stiff for street use, however. My opinion only, of course…
I think yes because the interior is way more exciting than the Corolla. And the Elantra is great but it’s not as well rounded as a performance car. If you need AWD then you can’t do better than the Toyota though. It has great character
17k miles already! Good on you for actually driving it 👍

not too loud but loud enough and still keeps valve if you want it
you don't even need an exhaust lol, just deleting both resonators make a nice sound on these
Just traded in my 2016 gt350 for a 2025 civic type r and I have to agree u can’t hit a hard 1st to second.
Can you talk about the 1-2 shift issues more? I thought it was just me doing something wrong. It feels crunchy if you rush it.
Can you please try to drive an 05 Subaru Sti? Been wanting to see you drive one and hear your thoughts on them.
If you had 45k and had no other cars, would you still buy your Type R or any other car?
Great videos btw!
Yes, it have double "purpose" and the extra cargo is no brainer
Man I can’t believe a camary almost cost as much as a type r without the markup of a type r
It’s like 10% better which goes a long way in feeling complete. Not a deal breaker if I had an fk8. But it’s enough to be noticeable
Awesome road
Just in time for my lunch break
Question for the next vid, Tom; now that you have the Lexus winter daily, replacing the 'harder' miles this car got the past few years, do you regret getting this? You have the M5 and the 911 for your 'fun' miles, would you not get the TypeR in hindsight? Or maybe getting something MORE fun for its limited usage?
I still treat the Honda as a fun reliable daily. The Porsche and BMW are more for special trips
Do you edit your vids with premiere pro or final cut? I feel like my premiere pro exported stuff never looks this crisp. Love the Type R vids!
Awesome! 👍🏼👍🏼
I know the type R is a little much for a first car with the price and every thing, but would the SI be a better choice in that case?
13:57 sounds like we need a modern s2000 xD
5:15 while that's definitely the case in SoCal on stuff like angeles crest, i unfortunately dont think pedestrians/bikers have the same mindset up here in the Bay. seems like almost every saturday they'll hold their own Tour de France and expect everyone driving isn't there for the fun roads, i know we gotta share the road but these guys expect us all to bend over backwards😭😭
God I want this car so bad
I have a 2024 Elantra N and I’m not gonna give you flack for saying the brakes in the CTR are better lol. It is factually correct! Both cars have their pros and cons but if you’re into cars you’ll look past the brand biases and realize that both cars are amazing in their own ways. Keep up the great work! Always so calming watching and listening to your drives and talks😊
While the CTR is known to be “better” I believe it’s ever so slightly incrementally better and definitely not $10k better.
@@official_commanderhale965man I really wanna switch to 18’s on mine. Is the ride much nicer? The 19’s are so loud lmao
I think it ended up paying like $70. idk why they try to stretch the engine oil so much
Weird that yours would stretch it that far and his doesn’t. Driving style maybe?
I drive mine pretty softly too most of the time so also surprised
@@alexp6409 im not too sure, I commute 40 min to work. I dont drive it hard on the highway because I want to have decent fuel efficiency but when im off the highway is when I like to have my fun and listen to the turbo blow off n all that fancy stuff. even now when im almost at 8k miles which is 2k more miles from the last oil change, oil life is only at 90%.
I'm super tempted to get a CTR or Integra Type S but I don't know if I can do FWD.. I need to test drive one.
7:45 my great grandparents old house
When I had this gen SI, it totally had the sticky steering thing. It was only at highway speeds it seemed like or when the steering wheel is mostly centered on a highway vs. driving around town and moving it a lot. Nice to know that was a recalled thing. It was pretty annoying. Not like get rid of the car annoying or anything but noticeable and annoying lol
edit: PS: you make me miss the SI and the civic in general and there's an at MSRP type R at the dealer a few miles from me. Don't do this to me lol
Fun hot hatch 👌
Instinctively I want to say it needs more power but what I'm really wanting is a more exciting engine. I know (at least for the last while) that's not Honda's thing, it's chassis/handling, but I'm definitely an engine-first gal, much as I do love Honda.
the new type r's arent as sonorous as the old b and k series hondas, or even s2000 but they make up for it in dynamics and speed. personally with the pedal dance i have wheelspin up until 3rd so I'm good on power, but its still easy to tune these motors. I think they could and should work on the exhaust though, Integra type s fixes it
Have seen vids with like an ATAK and yeah, an exhaust helps a lot. Even Topher's with just the Type S exhaust does a lot, as you say.
If you had to get rid of the Civic or the M5, which would go? Assume the Honda, but you never know. I also suspect your car was more fun for this drive than the guy in his Turbo S.
Yay finally first to arrive
16:30 I've heard talk of this Type R's suspension being hilariously stiff, even in the comfort setting. I'm guessing that hasn't been your experience?
Stiff but tolerable. +R mode is even too stiff for the track though
I swapped in the Integra’s module. Result: two very usable modes, Comfort and Sport. Before the swap, only Comfort mode was, well, comfortable. Plus R mode is still too stiff for street use, however. My opinion only, of course…
@@boots_n_cootsYes, I agree the Type-S module makes a big difference in ride quality. Comfort is now much more livable.
Are you a truck guy aswell?
Have you driven new z wats your thoughts thanks
10:59 15:25 accelerations
Is the FL5 Type R worth the $8K-$15K delta compared to an Elantra N, GR Corolla, or even a FK8 Type R?
I think yes because the interior is way more exciting than the Corolla. And the Elantra is great but it’s not as well rounded as a performance car. If you need AWD then you can’t do better than the Toyota though. It has great character
