How To Reset Maintenance Light For The 2009 - 2013 Toyota Corolla

  • I created this video to help people reset the maintenance light for the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 Toyota Corolla. This maintenance light turns "on" every 5,000 miles. It is a reminder to change your oil and oil filter. Shops often forget to reset this light after performing an oil and oil filter change.

    This is exactly how a UA-cam tutorial should be. I watch this every time I need to reset my light because I always forget the order of the steps, it’s straight to the point and solves the problem without issue.

    I don't know why any one would give this a thumbs down. This just saved me $50 dollars on having it tested. I purchased a code reader and every thing came back clear. Very odd. I then checked here. A little more research and I realized I had done my wife's oil change the last time. It all became so clear! Thank you so much.

    The maintenance check light is the only warning light that can be reset in your dash. This is the oil and filter change reminder.
    There is an Oil Light. If the oil lights up, the car needs oil immediately. This mean low oil or low oil pressure. Severe engine damage can occur if a person where to keep driving without oil. Putting the proper amount of oil will turn this light off. If it does not your oil pump is not working properly which is unlikely for a car a few years old.
    There is the Engine Check Light. The engine check light is triggered when a car needs a tune up, broken sensor, loose gas cap, and emmission related issues. This can be reset by disconnecting the battery cables of one minute. A lot of people do not put their gas cap tight, this will trigger the engine check light. Re tighten the gas cap drive a few hundred miles and the light should turn off by it self. If you can't wait disconnect the battery cables. Engine code scanner is highly recommended to write down the malfunction code before disconnecting the battery cable.
    I hope this helps.

    hi Ross,
    I have a 2007 Corolla 1.6 vvti, I bought it last week, and today when I changed oil, and wanted to start the engine, I noticed that there's NO low oil pressure light on on the dashboard. I think it's an European model, slightly differing from the one in this video. Actually I checked the dashboard lights and I can't locate the "oil can" sign at all. Is it possible that there's no such a control lamp in this car?
    Thank you very much!

    • @rossthediyaccountant
      @rossthediyaccountant  8 років тому

      I would check the owners Toyota Corolla Supplemental Maintenance Schedule.
      I know for a fact the 2005 to 2010 Corolla has oil filter change interval every 5,000 miles and maintenance required light pops up every 5,000 miles. I doubt that has changed. The general mechanic rule is 1,000 miles per quart of oil. Corolla hold about 4.5 to 5.0 quarts of oil, so oil and filter change every 5,000 miles.
      The only car I know that has oil and filter change interval of 10,000 miles are European cars like Mercedes Benz. The reason for that is Mercedes Benz engine hold about 10 quarts of oil.
      It is obvious you do not know anything about cars. So stop giving these stupid advice that will break bearsneak37's Corolla.

    • @rossthediyaccountant
      @rossthediyaccountant  8 років тому

      According to the owner's manual:
      Toyota recommends the 0W/20 oil for snow freezing temperature weather and this will give you the best fuel economy driving. The 0W/20 is a synthetic oil. This a thin oil and circulates well in freezing temperature. This oil is for gentle acceleration and slow speed winter driving. Not for high speed driving. This synthetic oil will wear out your piston rings during high speed and heavy load.
      For high speed driving (65mph to 85mph and faster) or heavy load, Toyota recommends 5W/20. This a thicker oil and provides better engine protection at high speed driving and heavy load.
      You can get 5W/20 in either conventional oil or synthetic oil.
      In the Maintenance Schedule A in for Conventional oil. The scheduled oil and filter change is at every 5,000 miles. There is NO caveat about heavy or extreme load, or short distance driving or excessive idling.
      In the Maintenance Schedule B in for Synthetic oil. You are correct. The scheduled oil and filter change is at every 10,000 miles. But there is a caveat in changing oil and filter every 5,000 miles in excessive idling and driving long distance and at slow speed (it is called traffic), driving in dusty road, and driving heavy load.
      It is not unusual to get caught in traffic. In traffic we excessively idle and drive long distance at slow speed. Driving high speed 65 to 85 mph and faster puts a heavy load on your car. Accelerating fast puts a heavy load on the car. Many of us speed. Driving uphill puts a heavy load on the car. Drive in dusty roads. All these points, satisfy the caveat to change synthetic oil every 5,000 miles.
      If your car is under warranty, this caveat is there to protect Toyota. It says you can change the synthetic oil at 10,000 miles but if the engine breaks down; Toyota is not responsible. They will say, "Did you not see the caveat."
      If you change oil and filter every 5,000 miles. Toyota has no excuse not to fix your car under warranty. There is no caveat under Maintenance Schedule A
      You mean well. But you just do not understand.

    • @rossthediyaccountant
      @rossthediyaccountant  8 років тому

      Read your owners manual and maintenance schedule. I maintain my family's car - a Camry, PreRunner, 4 Corrollas (1993, 2005, 2010, 1999), 4Runner.

    • @rossthediyaccountant
      @rossthediyaccountant  8 років тому

      I think you are right. The heavy duty diesel truck holds at least 10 quarts of oil. I do not know about heavy duty gas truck. I maintain a Prerunner and 4Runner and they hold about 4.5 to 5 quarts of oil.
      I was surprise too. I ask a BWM owner when he changes his oil. He said, "Every 10,000 miles." I said, "Most cars are 5,000 miles." My eyes popped open when I saw my mechanic put two 5-quart-container of oil in his BMW. The BMW oil filter is different too. It is not the filter in a can style. You unscrew this cylinder and put the a filter media. The European OEM oil filter are design to last 10,000 miles. They have more filter media. The filter media is 3 to 4 times bigger than the typical Corolla filter.
      I read the Ram 3500, 4500, 5500 Cummings Diesel's oil change interval is every 15,000 miles. But I do not know how many quarts of oil it holds. I have been reading about heavy duty trucks because I want a vehicle that can tow a 10,000 to 17,000 pound trailer. I am leaning towards Ram because of the oil, oil filter, and fuel filter maintenance schedule. And the Ram can handle a heavy load. With the correct gear ratio, it can tow up to 30,000 pound.

    • @rossthediyaccountant
      @rossthediyaccountant  8 років тому

      Read your manual. Two or three sentence underneath, about recommending 0W/20. It says. If you travel at high rate of speed or in heavy load Toyota recommends a thicker oil 5W/20. Also look at your maintenance schedule supplemental. There are 2 schedule. Printed side ways it says Schedule A for Non-Synthetic Oil and Schedule B for Synthetic Oil.
