- This video features comparisons between three different makes of Indiana Jones-style fedoras, including the Akubra Federation IV (2008), the AdVintage Harrison (2024), and the Herbert Johnson Poet (2024).
I have the deluxe Akubra federation IV in fawn and it's hands down the best hat I own.
Great lineup! Glad to see that your Fed IV is still going strong. I'd be interested to see the result if you reblock the crown at some point. I got a Fed IV deluxe last year - very nice and soft, perfectly straight-sided hat.
adVintage hats are fantastic too. I'm tempted to order a custom hat from Thomas some time later this year.
HJ is then of course the gold standard. I love how Michelle and her team have been able to reproduce the Poet just as it was back then.

Question number 1, what is the height of the crown of the hat from the base to the pinch.

Here's a bit of a response for you:
Herbert Johnson:
Question 1: Between 4 5/8 and 4 3/4 in
Question 2: 2 7/8 in (front/back); 2 5/8 in (left/right)
AdVintage:
Question 1: 4 3/4 in
Question 2: 2 7/8 in (front/back); 2 5/8 in (left/right)
So, the dimensions of the bashed crown height (from crown to the top of the front pinch) are about the same for both the AdVintage and the HJ. The HJ might be ever so slightly lower in the front than the AdVintage, but it's negligible. The dimensionally cut brim (wider in front/back than on sides) is the same on both the AdVintage and HJ. I've dismantled the Fed IV for re-blocking, so I unfortunately cannot give you measurements for that. Hope that helped!
Sweet, I’m about to get the Advintage Harrison and so far, looks pretty freaking cool, but question: what’s the color you got the Harrison in? It looks pretty nice
The colour you see there is the AdVintage “True Sable” colour. It’s a lovely shade, and it looks lighter outdoors. All the best with your eventual purchase!
AdVintage hats are by far the best I own. HJ doesn’t touch Thomas.
