    I don't understand why they design them to slide when you also want the thermal pad to stick to the enclosure. 5:20 does't seem like there is any contact at all. I suppose the pad just acts as a heat spreader.

      A clamshell style enclosure would make way more sense it's true

      Terrible design for sure. Unfortunately many enclosures are designed this way. Maybe they teamed up with the drive makers so that the enclosures and drives can keep making more money by selling more faulty enclosures and failing drives due to overheating 😂😅😢

    I have exactly the same situation.
    I have similar enclosure and EVO 980.
    Now I want to apply heat pad for more heat safety.
    How can I do that with this enclosure. Should I apply heat pad to outside of enclosure or directly onto SSD inside enclosure ???
    Please reply

    Question: my SSD shit the bed and I had to get a new one, but I want to get the old files off of it. I don't have a second M.2 slot on my motherboard, so I was thinking about putting the old SSD in an enclosure like this and plugging it in via USB to get the files off of it. Will that work?

    This may sound like a silly questions in this day and age of cloud backups but i much prefer physical. Having moved to external SSD drives for PC, phone, consols etc.
    Now M.2 SSD seem to be in the in thing for backups and speed i wondered is it worth having M.2 SSDs for external storage? I understand they need a protocol dock and still plug in via USB options (pref C).
    Is there much to be gained from moving to this systems for physical backups? Trying to weight up practicality and cost.

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  9 місяців тому

      Great question, actually!
      Anything with a motor is at risk of failure so yes it's absolutely worth it. Also less likely to be damaged in transport.
      I would add that you don't need a special dock unless you want full transfer speeds but if you intend to use as a steam library, for example, the faster the connection the better.

      Cloud is trash. Just like any such service, even if you are getting it for free, eventually when they get enough people reliant on it, they'll start charging a fee. Not to mention in terms of data security, guaranteed they're harvesting all your data for ad content, and who knows what else. I trust corporations these days about as far as I can throw em..

      Windows won't install to an external drive but if you install windows while it's internally mounted, then remove it and put it in an enclosure it will work

    Is it really important to put a thermal pad? My old m.2 enclosure doesn't have one

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  2 роки тому

      Hard to say, that will depend a lot on how much and how long you use it, which SSD is in the enclosure, etc. Many SSDs don't have cooling when in desktop use so probably fine especially if you're only hitting it briefly to transfer files on and off.

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  10 місяців тому +1

      I do not, you'll need to find the dimensions and compare to whichever one you buy online to see if they're compatible. If you buy from a site with a good return policy (like Amazon) you can also just buy and return if it doesn't fit. Best of luck!

    In same situation but need to do it cuz my NUC has issues with the current Kingston M2. Do I need 2 external encloseurs to clone one to the other? Also my computer doesnt even see that it is connected.

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  Рік тому

      That depends on the software you use for cloning. It's also possible if the current drive is failing that cloning may not be a good solution if data is corrupted. Sorry I can't offer more insight than that, best of luck with the recovery!

Can't seem to find a video of anyone opening the one I have though... I'm not paying more just so I can use this thing for several minutes, then put it back aside for storage..

      @CanadianComputerCollector I got it at microcenter all the boxes looked the same and didn't even have a manual or anything. Strangely it still works despite all that which is weird cause it looks like a screw could fit in that one spot. So it works my only question would be then - is the thermal paste necessary for transferring under a few hundred gb?

    I put my nvme WD Black on an external enclosure, USB 3.0 but it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting...😮😮😮. And the transfer rate is low, only 210MB/s. Since it's on a USB 3.0 should be 500MB/s.

    So here's a question, talk to me like I'm retarded. If I just want a portable SSD external. I can het like the 4tb 990 pro and use the enclosure and just download all my games on it, and basically use it like an external hard drive just plug in and go?

    • @CanadianComputerCollector
      @CanadianComputerCollector  Рік тому +1

      Yes! I actually use the one in the grey enclosure for that very reason as my laptop didn't have 150gb of space for Baldur's Gate 3. Just make sure you use the fastest usb port possible on your PC for the best transfer speeds.
