  • Stripping run with the full 4" potstill column and condenser.
I thought I'd made a video of this running - obviously not! :o)
Quick show-n-tell during a recent stripping run.

Wow, awesome. I just picked up a 135L tank and have some 75mm tube and have some tri-clamps on the way. I have been up way too late after discovering your channel. Thanks for the inspiration! Should be quite a step up from the little 20L pot still I made.

      G'day Jacob,
Good luck with the still build and just be aware, ... this is an addiction you've entered into haha!
      Happy Distilling!

This is awesome. I am working on one very similar to this. I was wondering if you had to get rid of any mineral deposits left inside. Mine has a bunch on the heating coil inside and im not sure the best way to clean it out

      G'day Tobey.
No mineral deposits in this one - was clean as a whistle inside and a good score!
I've had a few copper water tanks that have been heavily scaled up inside, soaking them with vinegar inside and slowly rotating them will help get rid of scale or at very least soften up the alkaline mineral deposits in my experience - you'll also find any pinhole leaks in a hurry! lol
I had used hydrochloric acid on one small water cylinder but would not recommend that as it is very dangerous and passivating (neutralising the acid) took bloody ages afterwards.
I replace the elements completely in all the kettles I make and make sure I've got nice reliable new ones in there.
Elements in water heaters get a fair thrashing in their lifetime.
Best of luck with your build and Happy Distilling!

Have you found standard GPO fittings get hot/ melt?
I’m curious what you use for mains connectors & if they can stand up to a few hours of 10 amps current flow?

      G'day Chris,
      GPO fittings?
Haven't had any problems with triclamp/gaskets or electrical fittings melting.
For my own 3kW elements I use 15amp cables (about 2mm+ square surface area cores) and fittings as they need a 15amp draw @ NZ 240volt.
For the hobby distiller gear I build for people I use standard NZ domestic plug fittings/cables (about 1-1.5mm square surface area cores) and only use 2kW elements so as not to overload things. (NZ homes and domestic workshops are generally wired and fused for 10amp draw max.)
      Happy Distilling!

Wow gotta say you have a nice set up did you say you also run it in reflux

    • @AngryParrotDistillery
      @AngryParrotDistillery  5 років тому

G'day Shawn - yep, the short 4" reflux condenser/dephlegmator I panned away to at one point in the vid gets inserted between the top of the column and the lyne arm, ... the column gets packed with copper mesh rolls, independent water feed setup to the reflux condenser - and it's running reflux.
I don't do a lot of reflux runs as I said in the video - most of my interest lays in full grain whisky/whiskeys and molasses rums.
      Happy Distilling!

Ah the same 4 inch dephlegmator you built on your channel

No, - funnily enough I sold that one and several more like it to fund more of this madness a while back.
The one I use now (in this video) is almost identical except I've taken to silicon bronze TIG brazing together the copper-stainless and copper-brass joins. The copper-to-copper joins I still silver solder (copper-copper joins are usually non-structural).
