Great set up. The MEGA 360 pod via the HB Control Head can display Side Imaging at your bow position. My trol mtr moves the boat 2.5 mph plenty fast enough to get good side imaging display. Slower just give more detail. realy nice for staying at the bow and SI a given area.

OMG! That is so much the truth! LOL!!!! Knot tying becomes so much more of an issue in your mid- to late- 40's as well. Keeping a pair of "Readers" in your boat at all time is as important as keeping gas in the boat!

Need to add that to properly use live scope you should use lithium batteries. The system requires constant 12v power, if your lead acid/AGMs drop to low or are to high the system will shut off. 12v lithium’s maintain constant 12v from low charge to full charge.

One question, when in spot lock on a windy day or river with current how do you keep the livescope pointing in the proper direction when its mounted to the shaft? My plan was to mount mine on a separate pole to allow more flexibility but after watching this video I'm wondering which way to go.

that is the exact set up on my boat, you'll love it. to save your self some cash, what I did is not spend the money to link the two. I do have the ultrex which forces you to buy a multi input controller to link. what ever unit I mark a waypoint on its saved to a chip. then at the end of the day or when ever , take the chip to the other unit and it loads and is saved on that unit to.

I agree. It's an affordability thing. People who have the extra 5-10k to spend on their electronics will, but it's not necessary. My answer is, look at all the people who have won tournaments before all this was invented. I think it's not so much what you have, but how you can utilize it.

I disagree with the no need for SI on the front deck. I have learned how to use my Garmin SI to scan an area and create a mental 360 view of an area and do this with my tm on lowest speed not spooking any fish. I did learn that high end GT52 Garmin transducer does this much better than the low end and if there's a sudden arrow change on my tm dururing the process I only get one lit blip line on screen then continues the image. I have no idea if this can be done on birds or lowrance? Enjoy all the FTM content and even though I got 40 yrs otw expirience and 15 fishing tournies I'm still a student of the game as I see fish getting tougher and tougher to catch with 5x the amount of anglers on the water now and all the advancements in tackle and sonar. :/

If it is true that fish get conditioned to the sound and vibrations of forward facing sonar and stop biting over time, then individual manufacturers have a chance to take the lead by simply building a sound distorter on the transducer that mixes up or masks the sound and frequency to keep fish from getting conditioned. Wait and see, this is be a huge selling point for the first company to do it.

You spent $12000 but saved $6000 doing it. . Kind of disappointing. I admired you for having a great sonar set up on older units bought off ebay, and fished as well as tourney anglers. I expected you to show these being used, but didn't think you were going to jump in. I'm kind of sour grapes on the new live sonar. I think it is unsportsmanlike to compete with them against those who aren't equipped as well. It is a lot like using a drone to hunt deer. Rather unethical. I enjoyed your videos on using basic sonar and fishing techniques. I have no intentions of purchasing such expensive sonar nor will be interested in how to operate them or waste time watching you cheat fish. Perhaps all the wealthy anglers will be watching. I may review some older vids, but you lost me on this one.

Hey! Can you help give me some advice on my current setup? I just bought a 2000 Triton TR21. It came with a Humminbird 899 HD SI much like your 998. That unit is at the console, and I have a small 688 I believe mounted into the front dash. For now, I uncooked the 688 and installed my Garmin 74 CV UHD I had off my skeeter. So here comes where I'm having troubles figuring out what to do next... I have thought about A. Buying a garmin 93 SV to mount at the console and link to my 74 up front and probably remove the 899. B. I have thought about simply ordering the interlink system and running new power wires to the 688 so I can have 2 units linked pretty cheaply. C. I have thought about buying a used HDS 9 or 12 Gen 3 carbon and leaving my 899 on there. I have a friend that has a HDS 9 and I really like how well the 2d sonar reads. And from videos I've seen, their side scan and structure scan is pretty dang good. Or D. should I just leave the 899 alone and buy LiveScope for my Garmin up front? Also, I will mention that I have a Humminbird 1197 on my Bass Tracker. It also has a ram mount, so I can actually take the 899 off and have the benefit of a 11-12 inch screen on my new triton and utilize the same power and transducer cables. As far as I've seen (only had the boat on the water once before I found it has a bad live well hose leak), the side imaging seems to work pretty dang good on my new triton. So I might just be wasting money buying an extra unit except I won't have two units linked unless I go the B option. I just really want to learn to fish deep this year like you do. Thanks! I look forward to your advice.

Question, Why didn’t you get the Garmin 1022 instead of the 1022xsv. (Isn’t the “ xvs “ the same unit but the addition of mapping and down and side imaging). Also did you purchase the transom mount transducer with your Garmin ? Sorry if a n00b question, just trying to sort these units out.

Just picked up a killer deal on some gently used 8 month old units. Got a gen 3 8si gen 4 10 si and a mega 360 for 2500 dollars off a guy thats on a fb group that im on. They will be a nice addition to my sey up gen 1 helix 12 and a ipilot ultrex. Looking forward to watching your 360 videos ive enjoyed your offshore tutorials. I fish mainly rivers and only occasionally get to travel to lakes. Got a trip coming up in a couple weeks looking forward to putting this new hardware to use as well as some of the things ive seen on your channel. Tight lines.

@fishthemoment SUPER SUPER informative vid and in depth but can you tell me why you have 360 imaging and the panoptix both?

    • @FishtheMoment
      @FishtheMoment  3 роки тому +1

They both have different advantages and applications. I will make a video explaining the difference in the coming months. The biggest difference is that I can use the 360 imaging when my ultrex is on spot lock

    • @jordanspalding6446

I think the 360 is better for targeting and positioning on structure while panoptix is better for targeting active fish

So....would we like to remove all the mystery out of fishing ,or hunting for that matter? If you could just KNOW where every fish is at, at any given moment, is this what we want? If you knew exactly what each one would bite, would that be ideal. Hate to waste casts or time to actually figure things out. I mean hopefully we can watch the fish work the bait on these screens also. So we ALWAYS KNOW. We just want fish. All the fish. All the answers.
Dont get me wrong, I use tech ,.love it most of the time. I use On X and gps out hunting. Trail cameras would be fun too. So I'm talking to myself here mostly.
Anyway...what are we really after out there?

"Not necessary to have these $3000 fish finders with giant screens" says the young man, LOL. When you get over 40, you'll understand why some of us like those 10 to 12 inch screens. Also get you some Windex Vinegar to clean those screens, it's great.

I bought a boat that had two HDS10's at the helm, Replaced both with Helix G4 9" MSI. It had an ultrex upfront but no locator. So I added another Helix 9" and a 360 transducer. Then I added a Garmin for when a LVS 34 gets here..

I'd be interested to know what setup you think would be best for a kayak. most of us only use 1 graph. I'd really like to have side imaging but keeping 3-5 mph to scan as you said in the video is unrealistic

I find Humminbird’s model terminology very confusing. It’s not clear to me what the difference is between G3N vs G4N for example. Would you please share the model numbers of your new Helix 9 units?

I like your rational approach, that we normal folks can afford. I try to find one model old and refurb. Refurb are the only units actually tested before shipping. And I agree 9 inches is the sweet spot especially now with the widescreen display format. I wound up with a Lowrance Elite Ti2 with Active Image transducer for less than $700 bucks. I just picked up an HDS 9 Gen 2 to hook to my Motor Guide ducer. NMEA 2000 will connect the whole system and give me an autopilot using the Xi5. Got the Motor Guide used for $1200.

Thanks for the great video. I subscribed because your stuff is so very helpful. You mentioned one thing in here that I'd never heard before and I wonder if you might elaborate? You said the side imaging was only clear if the boat is moving at 3 to 5 mph, so don't get it as part of the trolling motor. If that's true I can't understand why it's an option on the Minn Kota trolling motors. I'm looking to upgrade electronics on my boat and was hoping the side imaging would be useful as I use my trolling motor to jig for walley.

This video is great and it was definitely a huge help. I did still have a few questions regarding your front hummingbird Helix 9 setup. I noticed your Ultrex has a built in transducer but I can't tell which one it is. Are you soley using this for your front Helix for 360 imaging or do you have it connected to your trolling motor transducer as well? Is your trolling motor transducer MSI or only MDI? Is your front Helix MDI only or did you get the side imaging? I'm trying to see if there is a benefit to me buying an ultrex with MSI or if i shoud go with the MDI model that is a bit cheaper.

Since your 2 Humminbird units are linked, isn't it possible to have one show what the other sees? Such as having your console unit display the 360 image or having the bow unit display the SI image from the console?

You're the most transparent of all the UA-cam fishing channels. We gotta find a way to get you north of 100K subscribers. By the way, are you doing any traveling in 2021? Would love to see you do "lake specific" segments where you attack well known lakes across the country and show how your techniques apply to that specific body of water. Start on my lake first....the Smallmouth Capital of North America - Lake St. Clair (Macomb, Michigan). :-D

Garmin says their transducer needs to be 8 inches above the Ultrex motor. No issues? Also, there is a separate pole for the Garmin that allows both hunting with your Ultrex and the ability to separate and hold a Garmin position while in spot lock.

Good stuff bud. I am trading in a bay boat this week to go back to a bass boat, I will have a similar setup to what you have, Helix 9 G3N MSI on the dash, Helix 10 G3N MDI up front with Mega 360 and an Ultrex non-link. No Garmin for me, I find the Mega 360 does a good job of locating the fish and structure for me.

I fish small waters with electric only. Seems like you’re saying that I shouldn’t bother with buying side imaging?
Feels like I should be able to dial in the settings to get decent results at trolling motor speeds?

I would just get a livescope unit if you're in a small electric boat. The image will be a lot clearer and easier to interpret as well.
