Ooopsie! I meant to say that Augustus has no FRONT teeth. He does have molars, just no front teeth.
Also forgot to mention (Duhhhh) that too much supplemental vitamin C can cause tummy issues in some pigs.
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue Oh bless him! Like a little old man needing dentures ❤️❤️
Too much vitamin C can also cause very painful urine crystals. These can be seen through microscope during the same visit when urine is tested by vet. We have had this occur in two pigs on different occasions.
@@Annie-z7l9o oh interesting. I will look into this some more. Thank you
Such a sweet boy he is. ❤
Im glad you addressed this because the synthetic vitamin c also has sugar in it and like other people have been saying it causes tummy troubles. Grass has a lot of natural vitamin c too and i cant reccomend it enough
exactly
Thank you so much saskia I didn’t no know this about vitamin c
Thank you for this! The comments are interesting to read as well. I’ve always given child life as a supplement to a balanced diet, but I’m considering reducing the amount now (at least to start with). Clay will be 5 this year, and whilst he’s never shown that eye issue, he does have a more sensitive gut. Maybe 1ml of vitamin C liquid every day is too much for him, even if he LOVES it😅 His brother Peeko had health issues and is no longer with us...I think extra vit C did benefit him overall.
Clay’s new(ish) buddy, Marlo, does have a small speck in his eye (I assumed it was the condition you mentioned, after I originally tried to wash out the small speck, to no avail). It hasn’t gotten any bigger in the last year, but I don’t want to risk making it worse. Saying that, Marlo is also being treated for a mild URI (his chest is clear and he has bounced back quickly), so he will still get 1ml vit C until he has completed treatment :)
Dr Ellie is our vet here in Derbyshire, UK!! And yes, she is amazing!! People come from hours away to bring their piggies to her! Love from Bandit, Splodge and Kernel Mustard (and our Mummy, Kt) from the UK ❤❤
Hope you are all well and safe and LAGPR xxx
What is the name of the vet surgery she works at please? We are in west mids x

@Annie-z7l9o Yes I think you are right - I saw an issue displayed in the waiting room!

I have already tried to reply to you once, but it isn't showing up..? Sorry about that - hope this one works!! Xx
Saskia, I am glad you are addressing this issue. I was giving the girls too much and Issy's gut took a hit. So I slowed down the liquid Vitamin C and gave them more veggies. After several bouts with Ben A Bac she is good now. 💕 Of course with the vets advice.
Yes! And oops big Oops - I neglected to mention in the video that in some pigs the synthetic vitamin C can cause tummy issues
Welcome, Augustus. You have the greatest hooman and will benefit from the awesome care.❤🐹
Thanks to you and your friends at LAGPR I have now 3 boys who are healthy, happy and live like absolute kings! When my boys got hay mites really bad it was your advice with ivermectin that literallly saved their lives. And your passion for these critters is infectious, I find myself watching your videos even when Im not looking for any advice, I just love to see all the piggies that come into the rescue
Thanks Saskia! Another amazing video! I have been looking forward to this one since you mentioned you were going to be making it during a Saturday Live. Millhouse is so adorable I hear him ringing the bell during the lives. He’s such a sweetheart! I should have had my picture taken with him when we drove down!
Awww. This was a great introduction to Augustus and great information.
He's so cute 😍
Aww, Archie 😂 and hi, Augustus! You’re a very handsome boy ❤
Love Augusta’s! What a sweetheart.
Hi Augustus!
❤❤❤❤❤
Welcome to the Buddah Boy gang, Augustus! ❤ Great informative video, especially for new piggy owners! 😊 Your videos have been so helpful to me in the 3 years I’ve had guinea pigs
My partner and I take Camu Camu powder every day in some water for our Vitamin C and I regularly add a 'tiny' pinch to some water in the piggies veggies and mix it all around. Camu is the highest 'natural' form of Vit C, so I don't give them very much at all and most of it probably stays in the water, in the bottom of the bowl, so I don't think they get too much.
I've also heard that if you give too much Vit C all the time, then you have to keep on giving that amount, because their body gets used to it and if you stop, they can then develop Scurvy.
We do give our piggies quite a varied diet, but as the veggies are from supermarkets, I don't know how much vitamin C is actually contained in them because some gets lost when it is stored etc., so I give the Camu as a fail safe really.
In the UK all good/decent branded pellets have added VitC. Selective naturals grain free is the best.
Not if it has GM soy in it, which most do. I buy Versele Laga for mine and that doesn't contain any nasty fillers.
August is a handsome boy. My piggies Rosita and Fred Mertz thinks hes handsome too.good video saskia
I've have this question cuz my girls get fresh veggies and daily vitamin C cuz their all CBS pigs and one has 2 tooth root absess and she's been on and off antibiotics. But the three of them love that liquid vitamin c like will stand up wheeking for it like a treat.
scurvy is no joke! but so is pseudo scurvy. be careful guys! ❤
Please tell me where I can see a complete list of vegetables and fruits allowed for guinea pigs.
Idk if you'll ever find one. If I'm unsure, I usually just Google it, just remember to introduce new food slowly

Be sure to check the calcium & oxalate content/levels. High levels can cause lots of problems like urinary tract stones, sludge, and stone blockages. ❤
what about oxbow vitamin C cookies? We feed our two boys a handful of parsley or cilantro with maybe a carrot or celery but we give them one "cookie" a day from the oxbow vitamin C treats.
I do not believe the content in those cookies is sufficient.
Plus the fact that those cookies have molasses and tons of unnecessary and unhealthy additives.. better give nice amount of vegetables with high Vit c
I have been really looking into this issue. I have the child life and have given my babies one dose. I don't feel good about the sugar in it and it's sticky and my babies where in distress after because they got sticky around their mouth. I was cuddling them after cleaning them up and it I just won't be doing that again. I will keep it in case they ever get sick to put in with critical care.
I also don't want to be completely dependent on vegetables especially in the winter. Really bad weather happens, you can go to the store and everything they have is in bad shape, I could get sick and not be able to go to the store and it be a blizzard and not be able to ubber eats. I just don't like leaving it up to perishables and having to try to go too crazy with kinds. So I have decided to get the science natural vitamin C cookies which are sugar free. They are on the regular science selective kibble as well as the grain free Timothy Hay one as well as their line of treats and love it. They are doing very well on it and have very soft healthy coats that just keep getting better.
My piggies are also definitely hard gainers and very active and playful so I worry about feeding them too much veg when they are little and really needing to eat their hay and their pellets and put a little weight on. They are growing fast, but don't have extra weight in case they ever got sick. I'm definitely going to get some hay topper to get them to eat more and fill in a bit more.
There is definitely so much to go over being a piggy parent and different ways to do things. I definitely don't feel comfortable feeding sugar regularly and don't want to make them deal with something sticky regularly. My piggies didn't like it either, they are not use to sweet feed or treats.
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue Agreed. Several other reputable sources also agree.
What are they given as "cookies" and how often can they have them please?
I do not believe the content in those cookies is sufficient.
@@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue We use them as an extra treat only occasionally, but we do NOT rely on these for adequate daily vitamin c.
Ok, so confused now. Doesn’t Scotty recommended that vitamin c supplement, and I remember Dr Kanfer in one of your videos, I think it was on heart disease, also said she would use the same vitamin c supplement. Also, since brexit I think the veg quality in the UK has gone downhill, so worry the veg has taken so long to travel to us that vitamin c has decreased in it (unless you grow your own). Sorry, am not criticising in the slightest, love your work, just not sure where I stand now! Xx
I think supplementation to this degree has become a bit of a myth and has since proven to very likely not be needed and even unhealthy in some cases of over-supplementation.
My vet had requested that I add supplemental Vitamin C to Flopsy's diet. Flopsy has been suffering from hind leg inflammation, and I am presently giving him one tablet of Oxbow Natural Science Vitamin C per day. Flopsy is also getting some romaine lettuce and spring mix, as well as Meloxicam twice a day, with four feedings a day of the EmerAid IC Herbivore critical care. The question is that this treatment may be long term, though the feedings will eventually be phased out as Flopsy's appetite remains good. What happens after that depends on further monitoring of Flopsy, both mine and at the veterinary level.
The Sherwood pet health supplements are really good and do not contain molasses/syrup/sugar. I'm unsure where all they ship to though. 😊
My piggies don t like that vit c. The vet recommend it because our older piggie (8jr)had overgrond molars and that was because of not innove vit c she said . But all pure piggies get faraioty of greens. Althou they are spoild and demand now only spinats and andive, thats there favoriet.
So. Vitamin. C. Over medicated. ??
Saskia, my boy lost his brother to a uri but he got a clean bill of health, despite a few sneezes. He now has pneumonia, lost weight and is on antibio's & anti inflammatories. How do i boost his weight back up please? I have been giving a probiotic 2 hrs after and critical care morning/noon/night. Is there anything else i can do to help him? (Hes eating and drinking) thanks
At this point, please continue with critical care for sure. Maybe give more and more often. Several exotics vets have told us it was ok to give some organic baby food oatmeal mixed into the critical care, about 30% of the overall mixture. Saskia, have you heard this? What do you think? 😊❤
Feed feed feed him all day long smaller meals of all his faves. And FIGHT that pneumonia with all you got. We are very successful with the following; Nebulizing with Gentamycin as well as oral Bactrim , Azithromycin or Baytril. And two weeks minimum of this. Some vets prescribe antibiotics for 10 days but I have seen better results with two weeks. At times we will continue this treatment for 3 weeks as Pneumonia is a tough enemy to battle. I highly recommend a head Xray may be in order as well to rule out CBS. More info on that here www.laguineapigrescue.com/calcified-bulla-info.html
@@HEXMACHiNE374 Please stay vigilant with his feedings and meds even when u get tired, even if u have to miss some work or school. You can do this! Your piggy loves and needs u! Keep up the dedication! Follow Saskia's meds and insist that your vet give you what Saskia recommends to save the life of your piggy. Also, get CareCredit. Having it helped us save the lives of 4 of our girls! Much love & prayers ❤
@@HEXMACHiNE374 Another helpful thing: if he will run a bit, let him. Encourage him to run a bit to get cardio but no chasing, ok? No added stress. Exercise really does help the lungs! Just like in people, the more active the lungs are (more/deep breathing) the less likely fluid will happen or worsen.
@LosAngelesGuineaPigRescue thanks Saskia, he's back to the vets for his 1 week check up tomorrow so I will ask. His lungs don't sound any better when I hold him to my ear than they did last week, so I'm hoping we can get more antibiotics. I *really* appreciate your reply ❤️
I just buy pellets that provide vitamin C
Lab tests have shown that added C to pellets likely do not contain the amount of C promised. I personally think that for healthy animals, fruits and veg should be where they get get it daily
