Have you looked at the heroism of Norman Tunna? To be fair, it involved others, but he was the main guy, handballing LIVE AMMUNITION away from a fire during the Birkenhead blitz. He managed to get enough away to avoid a disaster, and he himself was unhurt, (unless you count blistered hands) but he had been at it for hours and hours, and in his own words, "I was appallingly tired". He too received the George Cross and was also immortalised by giving his name to a British Rail locomotive.
Patrick Vincent Coleman was a train dispatcher for the Canadian Government Railways who was killed in the Halifax Explosion, but not before he sent a message to an incoming passenger train to stop outside the range of the explosion. Today, he is remembered as one of the heroic figures from the disaster. PLEASE check out the Canadian Heritage minute for reenactment.
Iowan here. Kate Shelly isn't as well known as she used to be but those bridges still stand today and her legacy lives on.
Also you're an author? Must have missed the memo. From one author to another I'd like to hear about your writing works sometime.
John Axon was a brave man for risking his own life to a runaway train that he couldn’t stop.
Rip to all of them.
Kate Shelly’s story was told many times when I was a kid. She ignited my passion and seeing how amazing she, a child herself, was able to pull off this feat. Her story still lives on in Iowa, though yes, her story not being as told as much as it was before. Definitely a good story to tell youngins, that they can accomplish anything.
I love hearing stories like these, lets you see and understand where names came from. Bless these legends!
To honor Jesús García Corona, I named in my Thomas The Tank Engine stories Baldwin centipede N DE M No. 6402 after him. Why a centipede? Because I love them and I know them the most out of all mexican locomotives. RIP you hero.
I've never heard of Kate Shelley mentioned in Freeport, and I live here (Freeport). It's not a big surprise as it was the IC that ran through Freeport, and not the C&NW. But I think that there should be some recognition of her in town.
Wow such incredible stories! Thanks for sharing
I remember the Kate Shelley story from Reading Rainbow back in the day
A great programme this one. Ron Knightall was brave enough to return to his engine, and give Ben Gimbert the 'right away' ; both men displayed raw, naked courage that night. So many other railwaymen, of many nations, have done the same. Try to find the book 'The Springburn Story,' which recounts another hero, James Haye-Stphens, of the Caledonian Rlwy, who gave his life in the same way as Wallace Oates. Ordinary people, who did extraordinary things.
Your story telling is awesome, I have read stories about John Saxon but didn't know about the other bloke's (men) and Kate's stories. Cannot wait for your next story which doesn't involve British Rail! I live in Newcastle NSW Australia. Thank you.
I saw the named British locomotives many times, and knew the stories behind them, but had never seen pictures of the men involved.
Soham station was later closed, but a new station was opened there in recent times. Soham seems to be an unfortunate place. It’s other claim was the killing of two young schoolgirls by a man working as a caretaker their school. He told a bizarre, and quite incredible story as to how they died, and how he tried to save them. His story was, unsurprisingly, not believed, and he was convicted.
The ‘cycling lion’ on the early BR crest was based on stone sculptures of lions which stood outside the British government pavilion at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley, in 1924. Some of the buildings from that event stood until recent times. I believe some locomotives were exhibited there.
I know the other stories but Kate Shelly is new to me. Sounds like a good lass.
All heroes.
What a brain trust, to have placed the munitions car, right behind the locomotive, and tender🙄. So, if a spark from the loco, was to spout from the smokestack, it was first in line to catch it. And then, not cleaning up all the sulfur, prior to loading, explosive bombs.
The Kate Shelly story, is famous. I've read 'bout her, in other documentaries.
Howdy, I have another underwater train story for you, while not as mysterious it would be very important to me as my grandparents saw the engine lifted out of the water in '57, I was wondering if you could talk about the Manitowoc and Two Rivers train derailment where C&NW 1083 ranaway and plunged into the East Twin River, I would also appreciate if you put my comment somewhere in the video, thanks even if you consider lol! Have a good night!
ready for this to be a 25 part series?
Vincent Coleman
When is Engerth-Locomotive coming in detail
Rip to everyone who died. 😢😢😢 6:53
I can do you one better than British Rail
British Rail with Pearlman in charge…
TIL WE MEET AGAIN!
Frank Bridges does not get the credit he deserves for Soham, having seen the train in trouble he set the line clear and ran to the platform with fire buckets in what would have been a futile attempt to try and extinguish the flames :(
I guess you can say John was highly Train-ed!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
First Lol idk why I’m doing this

Not even 100 views in a minute, bro fell off.
Bro who asked you
@@aj3751It's a running gag. No Biggie, it's just a gentle tease from the fans to the creator.
No one cares
@@therailfanman2078 bro, it a joke.
Maybe I'm getting old, but I don't see the humor in this gag. Skidibi toilet makes more sense to me
