  • Filmed this for Tiktok but figured it might help folks out so here it is.
If you've got a Smart 450 that's been stood for a while and now acts like the battery is low and won't crank even after a charge / with a booster. Chances are your alternator has seized.

Short and sweet good informative video, thanks for posting.
Wonder how many so called seized engines this could fix.

I've seen a few smarts for sale that "wont crank" or "slow cranks but won't fire" for sale and I've wondered if they could be a nice quick fix!

      How'd you get on?

My smart has sat for 8 months. Due to no key.
Got it sorted. But this is happening. I burnt a starter motor kept trying. Changed starter today thinking it would fix... nope. Same issue almost like it wants to but something isn't turning to chug up to start.
This seems logical I'm gonna try this.

If it's struggling to crank and you've charged it / tried jumping it to no avail I'm confident it'll be a sticky alternator. Keep me posted!

I have not tried to jump or charge because it done exactly this and heater and lights do not dim, it tried to crank slowly like yours and then nothing

Fingers crossed this is why my 1.8t golf won't start.. Replaced starter, used other cables.. Used another battery.. Put battery direct on starter with pos and neg cables.. Just the same.. Starter runs fine Out the car.. Its been 2 months now.. So just hope this is the problem. 😅

got it started today... Looks like the AC compressor wasnt turning at all. Took the belt off all components, and it fired right up. 👍

@@craigmorton644 nice! Usually the AC compressor is on an electronic clutch so hopefully not too difficult to get that fixed!

Hi, what did you use to lubricate alternator? Can WD40 be used? Thanx for your answer!

I used plain old WD40 on it yeah 👍

I'm just reporting how I managed to lubricate the alternator with wd40 even though it wasn't stuck, but I did it as a precaution and there were no problems after the wd40. In my case, the problem was in the battery.

How did you manage to narrow it down to the alternator?

    • @PanicAcid
      @PanicAcid  2 роки тому +1

When it first did it I though it was the battery so threw my noco booster on it (which cranks my 4.0 Jeep and my 5.7 Camaro!) And it was still slow to crank.
Jumped on the Facebook owners group and posted about it and a few of the usual culprits all said alternator so I gave it a whirl.
A few advised on immediate replacement but this is the second time it's happened in maybe 2 years so I'm not in a rush! 😅

@@purplehaze8557 not a problem, usually I'd point the finger at the starter personally as most starters and engines have the power to just spin the belt on the pulley but not these tiny gutless 3 cylinder smarts lol.
