    Hi
So, this Smart came to me as a crank no start...
Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to run, but, diagnosed the reason why would not start...
Follow me on this video to find out how I tested it, and what was the problem...
    Hope you enjoy the video.

Engines quite happily run on very low compression if it has everything to make it run and the low compression is relatively even.
I remember as an apprentice we had a guy come into the shop in a Holden HQ ute with a clutch problem after he had replaced the clutch himself.
He wanted us to fix the clutch and give the engine a good going over .
The ute had done some insane amount of miles and was pretty tired .
New plugs, leads , points and condenser and an adjustment to the carburetor and she was running like a champ, quiet and smooth.
Plenty of blow by so I checked the compression and found all 6 cylinders only about 50 psi .
Done a wet check and compression sky rocketed .
So Luis , the low compression is not good and I think it would have tried to go given it had spark an fuel, but i reckon its slipped on the cam timing and munted the valves or its been severely over heated and blown the head gasket between the cylinders.
By the way, I could not see any spark on those plugs even when you shaded the sun.
I only saw a very random spark on the spark tester .
You know you have to follow up on this fault and not leave us in suspense.
    N

      Hi
It was definitely spark... trust me!
Unfortunately this has been recorded few months ago... I can try to find out what was wrong with it...
I don't tend to undertake jobs like this, due to the poor conditions working from the driveway...

I like that how you make the compression test! All plugs removed, no variables. Many mechanics does not understand that, if they remove only 1 plug it shows the bad cylinder result even worse. No variables, you get the real readings. The easy test may be is to check quickly the timing on scope. Get the crank, cam and secondary windings reading to the screen and it should show the story within minutes. Actually 2 signals should be good enough. Or leak down test with smoke. This is too bullet proof. All 4 cylinders, it must be very bad service history if timing is not off.
About 1 month ago I worked with customer car. The complaint was misfire. I removed all the spark plugs, cylinder 1 and 4 test result was 50PSI less than 2 and 3.
    Thank you!

As soon as I heard the engine turning it sounded like very low compression, quiet and spinning faster than it should.
Also even without a spark, easy start will run a petrol engine. So at the point you used easy start it was a certain that it was a compression issue for me.
On another note, your videos are great and I thank you very much for all you do.

Not the first time I've seen this . A breaker has 2 cars . One is maybe newer with a bad engine and the other older with a good engine . Do a crappy engine swap and they can sell a newer second hand car with a good engine . The other goes to auction as a no runner but cranking and at auction you buy as is so no refund or returns . This is called doing business . Auctions are for pro's so you buy with the worst case scenario ( engine swap ) in mind . Sometimes those pro's let a friend go with them to buy a " cheap " car . Maybe in this case they gambled and lost because a real pro doesn't gamble at auction . He could only have been lucky if the car would have started . No tears are shed here . Got what they paid for and you did a conclusive diagnose . Good work .

Hi , I enjoy watching your videos all the time , but in this case you could do a final check by squatting a little engine oil in each cylinders, then you replace all spark plugs, that way you would regain compression and the engine would start .

JUST A THOUGHT , with all the cranking from where it came from and from you don't you think the cylinders might have been fuel washed because you did say you smelled fuel and it did not appear as if you disconnected any of the injectors and you showed the fuel pump was running added teaspoons of oil to each cylinder to see if you may have gotten a change in comparison should have been done . Just my two cents thanks for your time .

if that was a scrapyard engine ,what I have seen in the past was the valves and piston rings get dry over time,
how we got around this was spray a small amount of engine oil into the cylinder, then turn the engine over if this does not bring the compression up
we put another small amount, (tea spoon amount) into cylinder, then put some old spark plugs back in, turn engine over, sometimes it takes a few attempts to get it up to somewhere near enough compression

I have been told that the ignition timing is set by the ECU detecting the slowdown on cranking as the compression rises, if this is the case would a lack of compression make it impossible for the timing to be set ? Hence no start.

    • @LMAutoRepairs

I know the person that owned the car at the time, but the car was for sale, so I am guessing they must have sold it somehow with the problem... if only now is being sorted...
How did you got hold of the car anyway, who you got it from are surely the previous owner, or was at auction?
