  • Russian forces in Ukraine are continuing to make small territorial gains along the eastern front as Kyiv waits for new supplies of US military aid.
On his Telegram account, Ukraine's commander-in-chief gave a sobering assessment, stating the situation had worsened and his forces were under attack across the frontline.
The Russian military remains tactically poor, but it is proving to be adaptable.

Calling Russia "tactically poor" is rich coming from people whose tactics never saw the battlefield. Unless you count the _NATO-trained🌟_ Ukies whose "best offensive ever" captured a village, two hovels and three potato patches over the span of four months at the low low cost of hundreds of vehicles and thousands of lives. All of which has been retaken by now...

Let me give you the short version
    1. The shifted from BTGs to Division style fighting focusing on slow gains instead of big arrow attacks which is why you see them take place by place town by town village by village.
    2. Adapted to the use of drones. Cope cages, using drones to correct artillery, lancet drones, having their own fpv drones and strategic bomber drones (Shahed). With volunteers and massive industry the Russians are quickly becoming the most experienced drone army no defence or attack is done without drones
    3. Quantity is a quality. Recruitment, Mobilization, use of old stocks, making new ones, buying new equipment. The Russians understand a war of attrition needs numerical advantage to grind down the enemy and win Avdiivka is a textbook example.
    4. New methods of training. Trench warfare, drone warfare, artillery warfare, missiles and use of volunteer units. If you think the Russians are just going banzai to every attack they do by now the whole army would have collapsed. The meat wave attacks thing is just a myth for example i watch a 12 man team move from one tree lines to building in the cover of night split up in groups of four. Someone said that was a meat wave attack? Yet I've seen many Western units move the same way in training and even Ukraine used the same tactics last year in their failed offensive.

Firstly, great overview. Sincerely.👍Many open-source "NATO" researchers that are worth a damn agree with most of this. Tactics of Russia are improving.
The problem is Russia's strategic outlook. Russia is already economically all in & firing on all cylinders. There is no spare capacity, no "X-factors" that allow the potential for significant military production expansion.
1.) Russia is being hampered & slowly grinded down economically, quite effectively. It's a marathon; not a sprint.
Russia growing GDP only by military expenses, while other revenues consistently & significantly fall = burning money.
2.) When Soviet military "refurbishment stocks" run out, Russia's military production output is going to severely decrease. Russian war effort is headed for a long-term severe degradation.
Expect a visible on-field phase out of "the quality stuff" in the 9 months to 2,5 years timeframe, approx.. It will be most apparent in classic military hardware; arty barrels & SPG's, IFV's & tanks. In 2 years, artillery shells, that are now being refurbished from old Soviet stocks, will still be numerous, but new-production-limited. Not great.
As long as Ukraine stands & exists as a focal point of the sentiment " will not let Ukraine fall", the West will increasingly get more committed to the fight.
I'm talking about the increases in West's strategic education, strategic clarity, rising military production/ funding/ aid to Ukraine... there is A LOT of potential there.
      3 biggest shifts to come:
1.) Allowing the Ukrainians to take the fight to Russia's soil; hitting military & strategic infrastructure/ industrial targets.
2.) Continuation of the steady ramping up of the military defence industrial production.
3.) Greater technological transfer & commitment of more advanced weapons to Ukraine - the West's combined R&D potential is ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE.

      1. The main focus was the artillery in front of Donbas that had been shelling civilians for 8 years and where nato had been advising on deep dug in positions. The progress is slow because it is these deeply defended positions that Russia attacked and did so while taking 1 tenth the casualties of Ukraine.
Kiev and Kharkiv at the start were just a feint - they made the most noise at Gostomol airport which is actually West of Kiev - perfect to drag Ukrainian forces away from Donbas but of no other advantage to Russia at all.

@@elektrotehnik94 How many ukrainians do you think exist? 100 thousand bizillion? All eager to be mobilized and combat ready? Ukraine can probably sustain one more year of intense fighting and then it is the end. Either capitulation, or some sort of freesing the conflict.
US will do its best to fight until the last ukrainian, but the ukrainians will not agree. They already know what a terrible mistake they made by refusing to negotiate with Russia. But are afraid to admit it. And unwilling to face the consrquences. Because the consequences are massive and all negative. And some politician/politicians will need to be scapegoated.

"Make attrition work". Only idiots would believe 87% of Russia prewar army is gone (700k of men), that is even larger than the entire Russia land army pre war because they counted the air force and navy too. You fighting ghost now? Even BBC can recount 80k casualties and they inflated it already. And the 100 tank/month was also downplaying it. It was the minimum. Defense Report/Reuters put it at 1500 tanks produced in 2023 (125 tanks/month) mostly modernized old stocks and with expected Soviet production lines reactivation would probaly make it 2100 tanks this year or 175 tank/month. All to armed the newly trained troops conscripted last year. This at a time when Zelensky himself said Ukr are lacking men, lacking tanks (Challenger 2 and Abrams withdrawed) and shells. The trend is clear.

It's a matter of economy that's very important. Expensive western weapons versus cheaper but effective Russian weapons. And strategy of course. The Russians are the first to have introduced large scale drone warfare to the battlefield. And cheap and effective drones. They are the first to use relatively cheap but very effective so called glide bombs on a large scale on the battlefield and making them heavier and producing much more of them. For which Ukraine (and the west) has until now no proper defense. So Russia is innovating on the battlefield and the west tries to follow. We made an enemy for the foreseeable future that will be extremely difficult to beat if at all. Not a smart policy i would think.

I think we in NATO countries need to stop with the arrogance and admit we would be in one hell of a scrap if we got into a rumble with Russia. They are adaptable and tough. Their missile, rocket and EMW capabilities (and now drone tech) are top notch and the equal, if not better in some cases, than NATO equivalents. The sheer war footing economy to churn out machines and manpower alone is worrying. A sober realistic assessment and plan is necessary as if we do get drawn into this war, we might be in for a rude awakening, even with US involvement. @@SewTubularI don't know why UK is so obsessed with helping Ukraine. It's really a Russian civil war and nothing to do with us. I object to them spending my taxes on this. Also they talk of reintroducing conscription and sending troops to Ukraine. If they won't stop the invasion in Dover nobody will be going to Ukraine to fight.

You are kidding right? The F-16 has effectively a great hoover under its nose for an air intake - it can only take off from prepared runways, and not off ordinary roads like Soviet planes. They will get wiped out within weeks unless they stay based 800km behind the frontlines.

Russia has always been the masters of attrition wars. They have the manpower and military industry to replace their losses in real-time. They also adapt quickly regarding strategy and equipment (technology).
This is why NATO cannot win, especially on Russia’s front door step. They will advance initially but after being worn down retreat like Hitler back to Western Europe.
Russia has already freed most of the Donbas and created the southern corridor to their brothers in Crimea. Cutting NATO off from the Azov Sea.
