- The 4Runner is getting very old, but this might actually work to it's advantage when leaving the pavement.
Engine Adventures strives to explore and test the AWD and 4WD systems of all crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. To do this we test vehicles in real world environments in a way that allows viewers to cross shop and explore any vehicle they may be interested in learning about.

Awesome demonstration of Atrac. So many people don’t utilize this. So many instances all you need is atrac over the locker. For extreme stuff Atrac and the locker both on will make your 4Runner unstoppable but Atrac always works for me 90 percent of the time.
Atrac is very capable, especially if you know how to use it. The newer versions are much more aggressive and dummy proof, the older ones needed some finesse to work. Either way, Toyota should pair Atrac with Torsen style limited slip differentials. Even a basic one with a 2:1 bias ratio would half the braking force required, making the system way more efficient. This isn't just a Toyota thing, just about every manufacturer could benefit from this.
@@EngineAdventures your right about using Torsen with traction control. The subject came up in the jeep post and the conclusion was the same…it would save on brakes during traction control use.
I gave you compliments several times in the past on your channel for its content and the editing. You do one heck of a job. Your videos show exactly what I want to see. The views from different angles is great, it shows the jumps, the compression of the suspension and how it articulates. Your channel is one of my favorite channels for off -roading and it helped me to narrow down my truck choices a couple of times.
Thanks again! There are a few regulars here that help me keep my motivation for making new content and you are one of them. I certainly remember seeing your username in the past!
Has been my dream machine for about 10 years...
It's a great one!
Took my two years to get mine and I love it You should get one while you still can before they change to a 4 cylinder Turbo hybrid bullshit
Agreed.. i have the cameras and same.. sucky resolution. Better than nothing for seeing curbs and hydrants and white lines in parking lots.. but in low contrast rocks on dirt.. nowhere near good enough. Nice video ! Nice to see the modes explored.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Amazing. Thanks for the review. We miss the 4runner in Saudi Arabia
Didn't know you couldn't get it there! Do you have the 4 tuner?
@@EngineAdventures we have fortuner V6 4.0 and Prado same engine. We used to have 4runer late 90s but relaced with fortuner based on Hilux.
loving that green color! And ATRAC is epic!
Looks like a giant grasshopper !

Nice review I just picked one up just like that one same color and have my rocksliders ordered and when the tires wear out most likely up one tire size to like a 275x70 17R really don’t want to destroy MPG with 285x70 17R. For Me it will be a hunting truck.
Thanks for watching! You could go with a 255/75R17 or 255/80r17. That way you get the height without a ton of extra weight. Shouldn't hurt fuel mileage too much.
@@EngineAdventures
Yes I’m think 255x75 17R that way I don’t have to modify anything and tire weight stay close to the same. That makes tire 32.1 vs 31.6 inch so you gain .3 inch but that gets ground clearance close to 10 inches
Are there options that come with the vehicle for different tires for deep snow ❄️ and options for a different roof rack for installing a rooftop tent❓️Thanks for the video 👍🏽😉
From the factory, not really. There are plenty of aftermarket solutions though to get exactly what you want. Thanks for the support!
see if you can get your hands on a 4runner limited to test out the full time 4wd with just the XREAS suspension, maybe just a used one since they haven't changed much. We have a 2015 limited and are looking to take it off road. Great video
Thanks for watching and commenting! I'll see what I can do, however you can get an idea of its low speed capability by comparing it to the test where I was in 4wd low with ATRAC on. I believe the limited locks the center diff in 4wd low and has ATRAC standard. For the high speed I have no idea how XREAS really performs.
take it offroading you'll love it!
Can you upgrade the cameras? Keep the same wiring ?
Not that I know of, but I haven't looked into it.
There's a mod that you can do where you can lock the rear diff and 4 high but I'm not willing to do that on my new 4runner plus You don't want to be going too fast when you have the rear end locked anyway
Yeah, you could technically make it available in any transferase setting, but it should be that way from the factory.
Great review.
Thanks for the support!!
If it was your money, would you just get an SR5 with ATRAC or pay extra for the off-road for NF roads, deep dispersed camping, and not really rock-crawling-moab type of stuff?
For the most part ATRAC will take care of you. I much prefer a rear locker in many environments, but there are times when ATRAC is even more precise than the locker. Often times the rear end will slide to one side or the other with the locker engaged. I just don't like computers a whole lot (despite knowing that they have helped me avoid accidents in the past).
With the Tundra and Sequoia the TRD Off-road is a package, not a trim. I wish you could just get the rear locker by itself as an add on, but the TRD off-road package is still a good way to go.
@@EngineAdventures yeah I'm with you on that I had some argument with Idiot telling me atrac is better then lockers 🤣🤣🤣 he gose the landcruiser 200 has atrac there for its better sooo dumb the best thing to do is have all the wheels locked up not some Glorified traction control
Can the cameras be replaced?
Not that I know of, but maybe an aftermarket company has done something.
Personally, I like those sounds the system makes in CC and ATRAC. For some reason it makes me feel like I'm more connected to the truck; weird I know. I think it is because I can hear the intensity of how it is working and it helps me choose lines and steer. Also, I can't explain why enough that it would make sense, but I feel more secure with the Toyota than the Jeep off-road. Something in the back of my mind says if the Toyota breaks it will "work thru the pain" and get me off the trail, where the Jeep would say "nope you're just stuck here". I think we are too spoiled with cameras and tech.
My experience with Jeeps is that things break or stop working, but the Jeep keeps on going. I can't say much for the 4xe, because I haven't tested one for an extended amount of time. It is much more complex though, which can be detrimental.
It feels like the 4Runner was well ahead of the curve for off road capabilities through ATRAC, rear locker, and incredible off road suspension.
Hopefully the redesign keeps all the capabilities but enhances the tech features and gives better fuel economy. Otherwise they loose what has given the 4Runner such a strong following.
And that it stills Japanese built. I feel like they will not live up to it's bullet proof reliability if they do anything but a naturally aspirated engine. Maybe a hybrid okay, but not turbo. It's nice to know that you can go 200000 mi plus with these without having to spend $5k plus on a battery though.
Yeah, there really aren't many comparable vehicles. The Grand Cherokee is more luxury offroader and the Wrangler is more rock crawler. I'm excited for what the future holds on the 4Runner. I think Toyota knows that the 4Runner has a huge off-road following. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Toyota won't let you down!
Why more tech? More tech will mean more expensive.
@@DonJulio510 speaking more to the quality of the current tech. Poor resolution cameras, it’s still using the older generation of driver assistance etc. They don’t have to innovate anything, just pass down the tech from their newer vehicles to replace the outdated versions on the 4Runner.
What trail is this in CO?
It's in American Fork canyon, Utah.
Well done, Toyota !!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Where is this trail?!
American fork canyon, it's called forest lake. Used to be a nice place and still can be, but it is heavily trafficked now by side by sides and modified jeeps.
@@EngineAdventures that’s awesome, thank you. Great content
Thanks for the support!
Change tires.
These Nitto Terra Grapplers aren't too bad for an AT and a good compromise between on-road and off-road travel. Of course if the vehicle is regularly going off-pavement then something more aggressive might be better.
Range Rover is much more capable!
Doubtful, but I can't say for sure because I haven't had any Range Rovers to test.
reliability will be an issue with the Range Rover
Yeah, of seeing the inside of a service department's garage, maybe. Nothing beyond that. Overpriced British garbage.
