- Seth Jarvis and Vincent Trochek had a goal and an assist each and Anti Raanta turned aside 35 of 36 shots to pick up his 1st career playoff win as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Boston Bruins 5-1 to take a 1-0 lead in their first-round series.

I was shocked. If you would have told me 7 years ago that he would be my goalie for the playoffs I would have said we're toast. He has come a long way.

@@bartholomewesperanza3442 If he was 6ft tall he easily would have gone top 5, he's made for NHL play. And he's soooo good in both ends of the ice.
You can certainly see why we miss him in Portland. Winterhawks fans are extremely excited to see him doing so well in the big show. And he is a fine young man too.
The scariest thing is that he’s going to be getting batter from here.
This is the toughest and meanest I’ve seen this Canes team play in a long time, they were even pissing off the Bruins players at the end. I always knew they had the skill but I wanted to see them be annoying to play against on top of that skill and wow did the Canes pick a great game to do that. If you can out Bruin the Bruins in a playoff game you’re doing something right. Exactly how you need to come out swinging in the start of the playoffs and moving forward. Who knows what happens once Freddie comes back?

@@Reladan187 It's quite baffling how he was able to stay healthy in 2013 run for the Liiga championship. He played all games from around the late January. I know the NHL has more games and a tighter schedule, but still.
Of course he is a "bit" older now, but he's had quite a lot of minor injuries for the most part of his career in the NHL.
In the first period Bruins squandered many occasions . The Canes were opportunistic.The game was tighter than what the score indicates. Impressive performance by Raanta .
Yeah it seemed like the bruins were the better of the two teams for the first 35 minutes or so
@@Feelsbadman23 Nah id say there was alot of momentum shitfs, I would say the bruins definelty were the better team in the first 10 minutes ish each period but carolina definitively dominated once they were settled in.

And the precision to make that shot on the backhand. That's an impressive shot.
And a goal that wouldn't/shouldn't ever go in, but goalies are so quick to go down, they leave this as an option! Go down part way, shoulder in the top corner - will never go in!

@Greta Thanos please don't start talking sweep. One game at a time and the Bruins are not a team you want to fall asleep on. Sure I would love a sweep of the Bruins but I'll take an elimination however I can get it. Talking about a sweep is instantly bad karma especially in game 1 for any team.

Well I wouldn’t say he stole the game, it was 5-1. I know the Bruins had more shots but Carolina had significantly more offensive zone time. I am not saying he doesn’t deserve praise, but I don’t like stole because that implies Carolina should’ve lost.

The energy was even more spectacular than The Surge! We were so loud and fired up before the game they delayed the National Anthem at least 2 minutes before we got quiet enough to sing it! I absolutely love our crowd , it was the loudest I have ever heard at any venue I have ever attended. GO CANES!!

For whatever reason on the ESPN Broadcast it sounds like they lowered the crowd noise. It sounds so much louder when you go watch the Bally Sports Broadcast Clips.
Bruins could have easily got a lead in the beginning and sit on it, Raanta was amazing.
Bruins really need to cap on those early Chances. The Canes are extremely tough to play when they have the lead

Another game that got out of hand towards the back end. Canes came out confident and physical. That Jarvis kid playing like he has been there done that. This will be a quick one if they can keep playing like this

all season they've been outplaying teams through speed and stamina, but against a team known for being extremely physically aggressive (and dirty at times) they've decided to hit. haard. Bruins looked shell shocked most of the game and drained by the end of the 2nd period. Defense failed Raanta on that goal, man deserved the shutout for his performance

As a Longtime Bruins fan we have needed more scoring in playoffs for few yrs now and still need it...i believe it will be canes in 5 maybe 6 unless they play every game like this it will be over 4 game sweep👍...

It doesn't make sense to me why goalies hug the post on their knees. Alot goalies do that, so that's probably how their being coached. That needs to change.
As a fellow goalie, I too am mad with this style of play - and it has a lot to do with the training now - go down first, even if the play doesn't call for it!
Shoulder should be in the top corner, then that shot has no chance to go in! In that position, it's also much easier to go lateral to the other post! I don't get it.

@@tylerrutledge4561 wasn't, but played to a high enough level, still play (37 years in this position), coach house, rep & MD goalies. This was a low risk play made riskier by careless positioning.

I have Carolina winning in 6 but I wouldn't be surprised if they completed a sweep.
The Hurricanes must be angry about what Boston did to them in 2019 and 2020.
The Bruins 100 percent destroyed us in 2019. But I'm going to be "that guy" and say the officials handed them the series in 2020.
We weren't winning the Cup that year anyways, so it's whatever. But I'll forever be salty about the calls and lack thereof in Boston's favor.
Something about Rangers goaltenders man... Raanta, Georgiev and Shesty... A team like Edmonton should buy Georgiev and watch him become a beast... Only time he looks wonky is when he gets the odd start and can't build momentum... everytime he gets consecutive starts he is a STUD! A late firstround pick or early 2nd would do for AG! Certainly better than Smith...

ullmark glove is not ready and he is beat blocker side. we have to collapse inside to give him a chance to cover the puck and play from the crease.
Goaltending wasn't the problem in this game, the power play needs to step up.

COMMENT: I do not like the Hurricanes jersey or logo. Maybe a storm cloud would look better as a logo although that is infringing upon the Lightening's logo. SUGGESTION: Change the name from Carolina Hurricanes to Carolina Canes. It sounds better and a cane pulling a storm cloud could become the logo.
Do you know what this logo is? It’s their alternate logo, their primary is a storm. When a hurricane is approaching, it’s customary to fly two red flags with a black square in the middle. I’d have to disagree with your take, this is a great looking jersey and I suspect many would agree with me.

Why, why, WHY are goalies taught to hug the post on their knees?!?! That goal, through an amazingly accurate backhand (to give proper credit!) should never go in! Not if the goalie is hugging the post proper - as in with their shoulder in the top corner. All 4ft of the goals height is covered! Great game by Raanta & the Canes. As a Leafs fan, really don't mind if Boston is put out. Lots of hockey to go though.
The Canes had an open forward directly in front, and Ullmark was likely waiting for the pass. Trocheck waited, presumably to sell the pass, leaving Ullmark vulnerable to the chip. It was a high IQ play, with a ton of luck. It's hard to fault the mechanics there, given the available options to defend.
@@tylerrutledge4561 even if waiting for the pass, why already be down in butterfly? He has plenty of opportunity to react if a pass is made.
As a goalie & goalie coach, mechanics of plays is what I do. Relatively low risk play made MUCH riskier due to unnecessary positioning. Basically, a very weak goal! Ullmark needs to shake his head at that one.
This is what happens when Boston don’t have Rask in the net anymore, dump Boston fans will learn there mistake the hard way.

Canes fan here, but give respect where respect is due. Chara is gone, and both Marchand & Bergeron are getting long in the tooth. They're still a really solid team, but their age has finally caught up to them. It wasn't all Rask.
We didn't want Rask in net,he tended to choke when it counted in the Playoffs but as you can see Swayman is coming along nicely.
