  • Just a short little how to video for those that don't have large supplies of tallow but would like to have tallow to use as a resource in Self Reliance. Tallow can be extracted from beef that you purchase at a store and I'll show you how.

If you filter all that directly into the jar instead of through a towel, your fat will rise and the liquid will stay in the bottom and jell. That jell is healthy gelatin from collagen that you're just wasting. It can be used in soups and sauces to help things thicken and add nutrients. It keeps skin looking young, repairs cartilage, strengthens bones, regulates blood sugar, and more.

Can I ask you what kind of filter? I really want to make tallow soap and we eat a lot of 70% beef cause I am not afraid of fats. It seems like a coffee filter would plug up really ez

Is that simple to preserve or is it involved?

You don't have to go to that much effort and have a big mess to clean up afterwards. Just pour it all off into a container. The fat will rise. You can scoop it off separate from the liquid. I add tallow to my cooking oil to make the original McDonald's French fries. Yum.

I usually just pour the grease into a bowl of water and mix it up. I set in the fridge and the grease will rise to the surface and harden. It's real easy to just pick it off then. A lot of the impurities sink to the bottom of the water.

Just use a sieve or a cheesecloth to filter the moisture, however if you're not using 90/10 and 70/30 or 80/20, just cook the meat and let the fat render and DON'T add water to your cooking meat. Save yourself a wasteful step.

simply boil that to get out the water.

why wouldn't you let it cook and separate? I've seen where they add MORE water and boil for about 30 minutes and when it starts sizzling verses boiling they let it cool but there are other ways to get the liquid from fat? NO?

I hope your wife has come around to buying fatty meat now instead of the lean. They had us all fooled that fat and red meat was bad for us.
