Another fun little fact is that you can clearly see ergot growing on the family's crops. Ergot is a type of fungus (the black spots in the crops, which were shown from time to time) which causes all sorts of symptoms, including hallucinations, mania and distorted perceptions. It is theorized that ergot fungi played a part in witch trials. It is a neat little addition to the movie, knowing the family was gradually consuming more and more ergot.

I’m late but I’ll add my thoughts. I saw their separation from the town as a sheep being separated from the heard. It becomes vulnerable to the wolf. That’s when the family becomes the target of evil. Notice, every time the father says he is headed back to town, that’s prevented. First when Caleb hears him saying he’ll leave the next day to sell the sister, again when he says he’ll leave and take Caleb to the doctor. Again when he says he will take Thomasin to be investigated as a witch. All attempts to rejoin “the flock” are thwarted. Keeping the family isolated was the first step. Second was to slowly isolate Thomasin from her family “flock” And we know that her mother never looked at her the same after the baby was killed. The mother is the protector of her children. Even in the animal world, you don’t mess with mama bear’s cubs. The death of the baby effectively eliminated her biggest protector. Caleb was willing to go out into the woods and disobey both parents so that Thomasin wouldn’t be sold. To protect her. He was killed next. After that we have the father praying to God to save his remaining children. He was the next to die. Then, finally the mother. We know she blamed Thomasin for the baby and turned away from her daughter. But near the end, we hear her admit she didn’t feel close to God anymore either. So she was never a threat to Evil’s plan. She wasn’t protecting her daughter anymore and she didn’t feel close to God anymore. So she was really a non issue until she went mad, and tried to kill her daughter. And by forcing Thomasin to kill her own mother, she is now someone who has not only murdered, but murdered her own mother. She probably sees herself as damned to hell at that point, no matter what she does. So if she is, if you can’t beat’em join’em, you know? I think it’s really about how we’re most vulnerable when we’re isolated from support.

I loved The Witch. It didn't hold your hand, it didn't explain anything, you either got it or you were left behind. The subtle terror is one that is both rewarding and truly frightening. I had to go out and buy this film as I don't see the masses enjoying it, and the thing disappearing. It is good to see somebody talking about it!

    • @MatthewLedZepfan

Ripper X I absolutely loved this movie, but part of me wished it hadn't ended up being a supernatural film. I think it would have been more interesting if at the end she had joined a human satanic cult rather than actually having real supernatural powers. Otherwise great movie though

    • @ripx187
      @ripx187 8 років тому +131

For me, the supernatural aspect is what made is so rewarding. I do not subscribe to all of the theories presented in this video, I see Thomasin as doomed from the very beginning. She doesn't fit in, and it is all right there, from the way that she looks at others, to the way that she addresses others, there is no way that she can fulfill her obligations to a husband once she reaches adulthood. She is the hero, and you are rooting her on, but it's like cheering for the underdog.
Celab is without sin. His father is a failure, but I think that of all of the characters, it is Celab that would had mastered his environment, in-spite of his father not being able to teach him. It was Celab that held the family in check, the witches knew it, that is why they eliminated him. Once this was done it set off a chain reaction.
Black Philip wasn't the devil, it was a vehicle, the true forces at work throughout the entire film are the witches. In folklore, one doesn't choose to be a witch, one is born one. Thomasin was always a witch but fighting her natural instincts. If her father would had chosen a better life for his family, Thomasin would had still been doomed.
All around them are omens, the witches are in the background, spinning their web. They influence all events with subtly and manipulation, their only goal is to extract their sister. She wants to resist them, to resist the temptations but she just can't. Great film! I love a movie that allows two different viewers to see different films.

Gah....this movie is SO good. Just watched it last night and can't stop thinking about it.
Everything is just perfect...the cinematography, the period-accurate dialogue, every actor, the story...the whole damn thing just _works._
The tone and visual themes reminded me a lot of Lars von Trier's 'Antichrist.' Wet black twigs under an overcast sky...very gothic and elemental.
Endings are always tough to pull off....but the sheer catharsis at the very end hit me hard. This whole movie is beyond perfect.

    • @iamjulian2810
      @iamjulian2810 6 років тому +25

Ripper X it’s almost like you didn’t watch the film at all. You contradicted everything the film was. “Caleb was without sin”
Disobeyed his parents, and was shown staring at his SISTER’s boobs. If anyone acted normal in that family it was the father the entire time. He was the only rational one from a religion sense by far. Black Philip was the devil, as it was explained by the children and he transformed at the end of the movie therefore confirming it.

Yes, but don't forget, they would have been in England during (well, after really....but not much) the reign on Elizabeth the First, who was under terrible stress to do SOMETHING about these awful, horrid Protestants that were....wait, actually, she WAS protestant, so it was those awful, nasty CATHOLICS who....wait, the POPE was Catholic, and was also having his minions burn protestants alive at the stake......so it was an awful, nasty mess of hatred within their own country that was making everyone miserable, giving them ample reason to want to live elsewhere. The 'puritanical extremism' (I assume you're referring to Quakers here) had been known not much earlier in France in the form of Bogomils, who were upstanding, loyal to the crown French citizens who did nothing wrong except have a 'puritanical, extreme' view of the gospel, and believed the bible word for word. This wouldn't be so bad in itself, except that their non drinking, non gambling, up early and in bed at sunset lifestyle was making the king and his hard partying group of French bishops look bad....so they lined them all up outside of the city walls where they thought people were protecting them, and had them all disembowled. Wishing to avoid such unpleasantness, the Pilgrims, or puritanical extremists in England decided instead of being all religious in England (where EVERYONE ELSE was a SINNER and GOING to HELL!! at least according to the Puritans! who were not silent about it!) and getting disembowled, they'd just hitail it over to the new world .....

Black Phillip chose Thomasin to be his new witch worshipping him since the day they adquired the goat. it is mentioned by the mother, I think, that all their misery started since they adquired the animal, including the exile. Of course for the devil causing the family to be exiled was necessary in order to use all the family members to his will and have Thomasin to become his new witch without being judged if all that was had happened in the town they came from.

This movie had an almost Midsommar-esque affect on me. By the end of the movie I was almost happy for Thomasin to finally to be freed from her delusional family. I think it speaks to how religious groups are oft too quick to over spiritualize and demonize people/events that could be easily explained by logic or science (which more often than not, as scene in this movie, just pushes people towards the thing they are demonizing); the kicker of course being that in this case it actually was the devil/witches pulling the strings. Furthermore, the father's righteous pride being not only the reason for their banishment from their community but the catalyst/accelerant for many of the films events I think also comments on the rampant hypocrisy that's present in most extremely traditional/conservative religious groups.

@@purplesky4157 "Happy" definitely isn't the word I should have used, but it's hard not to feel her relief when she "emancipates" herself from her family. I'm not saying that becoming a witch is a "good" ending, it's fucked up, I just think it speaks to the movie's effectiveness when it can convince the viewer that the ending is almost bitter-sweet considering how fucked up it is. It's because of the movie's ability to manipulate it's audience that I referenced the movie having an almost "midsommar-esque" effect on me, because even though the endings to both films are fucked up, both endings feel correct for their respective characters in a really twisty and dark way. Super unsettling, but still feels like the "right" ending if that makes any sense.

I've also heard a theory that each family member resembles a different Sin-- clearly the father is Pride and Caleb is Lust, but each of the other members has a primary Sin association as well. Interesting stuff.
Ironically, the purest and least hypocritical member of the family is Thomassen. At the beginning of the film, she prays and begs forgiveness for her 'sins', which really are quite trivial and not bad at all compared to everyone else. I saw this whole film as a recruitment campaign: the witches want Thomassen because she is so pure. Thus they create the state of the self-fulfilling prophecy that you talked about. At the end of the film, after all of the ordinary sinners are gone, the purest one of all turns to the craft and becomes The Witch. The title 'The Witch' isn't referring to the old witch in the woods, it's referring to Thomassen. Her profile is directly underneath the words on the posters. Or, well, that's just my idea... the director purposefully left it open to interpretation. :-)

I think you're missing one key part of puritanism (and Calvanism) which comes up a lot in the movie: determinism. Puritans believed that, because G*d created everyone and is omnipotent, he already knows who is going to Heaven or Hell from the moment you're born, and you can't change it with your behavior. you either have grace in you, ie G*d's love, or you don't. If you do have grace and are going to heaven, you'll probably act in good ways and have good fortune, but merely going through the motions of acting good won't get you into heaven. So they lived in a state of constant paranoia.

Do not forget besides the fact that the story is built around an already wicked family, Thomasin is the only true victim along with the baby. But even the baby remained in God's grace as he didn't relinquish his soul. Thomas at the end she is the one to be corrupted and sign in the book. So what you are missing i think is that the true target was Thomasin from the beginning as her family was so wicked and unavailable to protect her that she was the perfect target to become another witch in the book

You see, this movie was based on 1600's New England Folklore and an old Wivestale called "the Cruciable", even though the director made the story up himself. Witchcraft, even now, tracing all the way back to the times of the Roman Empire has been seen as one of the most vile and hated upon thing's that a man or woman can practice. But replying to your comment; my point is that the Bible isn't meant to be taken LITERALLY. If it were, then God would have sent down Angels to Earth or had Qupid or someone from Heaven deliver a book called the Holy Bible. But no, instead the Bible was written by man. Jesus never said anything about Homosexuality, nor did he say that the urge for a man to get aroused when seeing a woman bare was an unforgiveable sin, and that's what Caleb was so worried about in the

But the Bible was written by man. The only time it speaks of Homosexuality in the Bible is in the Old Testament by people who wrote on their own beliefs of the Roman and Prestigian Churches. Nice video Ryan.
I want to mention two things I noticed that I found interesting (#2 is a spoiler):
    1. As the family is leaving the village to go live in the wilderness, we see the three native Americans walking away from the wilderness, looking back at the family as the three walk towards the center of town. I thought this was an interesting metaphor that juxtaposes the way natives lives were changed by the arrival of Europeans while at the same time this family became more like the natives had previously lived (in nature).
    2.
When Black Phillip is revealed in human/devil form, I believe he looks very much like the creepy looking Governor from the beginning of the film. I wouldn't be surprised if they were played by the same actor. He at least looked to be dressed very similarly to the Governor and the other town leaders we see at the beginning. I felt this was meant to represent the town's folk and how they were no longer following God's laws, so they could be seen as evil, or as the devil.
    Thanks!

This is similar to the more rural and earthy tones that we often associate with the 'pirate' accent, and would likely have been the most typical accent of the early settlers in the colonies. My theory: The daughter was the prize. The witch in the beginning is old and possibly dying, so they needed to have her replaced for the sake of the coven.
Black Phillip/Satan was an observer, or he wasn't Satan at all, just a demon possessing the goat that is to act as a guide when she was ready. The younger sister also says she speaks with him, which makes me think that maybe they wanted her as well. (If I recall correctly, the movie doesn't actually show the younger siblings deaths.)
They couldn't just take her, so they set events into motion that'll cause her to go to them out of her own will. They make the family rip themselves to pieces using their own religious beliefs against them. Family gone, unable to return to the colony(how would one even explain that shit?), and an emotional wreck after killing her own mother...she goes to Black Philip and joins the coven in the forest.

Humans don't sell their souls to random demons, only to Satan himself. Black Philip was Satan. Also, the younger children were taken by the witch, and its them burning in the bonfire that we see as Thomasin joins the coven thus causing all the witches to fly. In reality it doesn't matter to Satan if a child is baptized or not they can still be sacrificed for their cause. A child under the age of accountability is pure regardless.

Tonight I watched this film for the second time and, once again, it went by so fast because it is so engaging and engrossing. And what a refreshing thing it is to encounter a fright flick that doesn't feel the need to spoon feed the viewer everything, that needn't rely on cheapo jump scares or needless loads of gore in every other scene. "The Witch" oozes dread, and gives us a deeply unsettling feeling that builds and builds, gets under one's skin. Every detail is intentional, whether it's lighting or sound choices, or compositions inspired by Goya paintings. There are few flaws, like a couple of period details that are hardly noticeable. Kudos to Mr. Eggers for his excellent movie debut, and I look forward to anything else he does, be it the forthcoming "The Lighthouse" or the possible revamp of Murnau's creepfest "Nosferatu" (a classic horror film that will be a century old in 2022).

What I really like about this film is that it exists on two different levels; both symbolic and through the context of the period. People claim that "ergot" played a major role in the Salem witch trials. Ergot is a fungus that manifests in spoiled crop and produce hallucinogenic effects not too dissimilar from LSD. In the movie, the family struggles with a bad harvest of corn. Corn, wheat and rye are some of the crops that do get infected with ergot.

    • @raoulduke344
      @raoulduke344 8 місяців тому

The effects are actually drastically different from LSD. Ergot poisoning does have hallucinations as a symptom but it also made people violently convulse. It's more like a deliriant than a psychedelic. Ergot was blamed for, not just Salem, but the witch-hunts in general all over America/USA and Europe in the 17th and 18th century (though there have been witch-trials since the 14th century).
Imagine being from the 18th century and seeing someone shout about seeing fire, spiders and snakes before aggressively contorting their bodies in ways that looked utterly agonising. Witch-craft would probably be the first thing to come to mind back then.

  • @yunase

The only thing which make me still shiver, is how Thomasin lost her innocence and youth, as soon as she signed willingly the satan's book to become a witch. It's an allegory on how devil triumph. Not by causing catastrophe, or "bad things". But simply by allowing oneself to lose his own faith and hope. It's the ultimate form of corruption.
The last scene still haunts me. The reaction on her face as she levitates filled with pleasure (presumably filled with powers from Satan) is simply heartbreaking. You can see her last self, as a young girl, as she becomes something "else".

This film basically gave me hope that the horror genre will live on. It's a perfect example of how a horror film can be great if it's taken seriously and some thought is put into it. I like that it didn't spoon feed you everything. It made you think a little and left a lot to viewer interpretation, which , in my opinion, is what makes a great horror film and is exactly what is missing in the overwhelming majority of horror movies today. I really like this director. He is really reviving the horror genre and giving it a respectable name again after decades of shitty teen screams and lame, predictible jump scares

Maybe the laughter you heard was merely _catharsis..._ Thomasin herself laughed hysterically as she levitated at the end.
I too felt a deep sense of catharsis at the very end...I was rooting for Thomasin. This film, more than any I've ever seen, did an amazing job portraying the deadly seriousness of Puritanical scapegoating and witchcraft accusations. You really feel for Thomasin....she's utterly oppressed by the religious zealotry of her family and her time....and there's _nothing_ she can do about it. She can't reason with anyone. So at the end she basically says 'fuck it all' and finally sheds the heavy burden of the religious shroud that had suffocated her all her life...hence the hysterical laughter and sense of total liberation.

It is actually extremely neutral and an accurate time piece and take on 17th Century religious values. Thus, the movie is what you make of it. In all of the theories I've glanced over thus far no one has spotted one thing... The cloaked man-goat-figure in the final sequence is, with a little squinting, the 'judge' during the beginning of the film. I think this opening sequence is vitally important. Upon second viewing this came as a revelation to me. That settlement is being run by Lucifer and he orchestrated the banishing of the family as she, the daughter, was clear to him to be in essence entirely impure, and the family itself steeped in deluded overzealous belief. Easy picking's for His new recruit and also playful, toying with their starvation and physical/metal health ultimately aiding the girl to then join the dark side! Awesome! Best horror in years.

    Very well done analysis!
I found The Witch to be profoundly disturbing.
The filmmaking style reminded me of Kubrick or Bergman...it remained with me long after I left the theater.
For me, it might be the best horror film since The Exorcist, because what's at stake is nothing less than the soul...in this case, the soul is lost.
Many people have been critical, saying The Witch really isn't that scary... perhaps they think that "jump scares" are what make a movie scary?
The Witch succeeds on so many levels...it's great to see the resurgence of well made independent horror films such as The Babadook, It Follows, and Goodnight Mommy.
I look forward to the DVD of The Witch, because there were some issues understanding all the dialogue. The subtitles will help with a few lines of dialogue.
Still, I think the serious film community may eventually agree that this film is a masterpiece.

The first sign of any real paranormal activity was the apple coming out of Caelebs mouth, but thats just to us. To them, Sam missing, bad weather, bad crops, strange animal behaviour, spoilt food, lost items, lust, were just as real to them proving witchcraft was with them as the apple did to us, and though the line is blurred, I thought that was what made the movie GREAT, was that it was easy to empathize with the family, truly alone and without help in the middle of the New England woods in springtime, wild natives, wolves, bears, snakes, were all very valid and real fears back then.........

I think he was absolved, and that's why black Phillip killed him, almost like phillip thought 'well I'm not gonna get this soul and he could save his daughter from coming a witch.. better kill him.'

I personally feel that the movie told the story of a family losing their minds in isolation and ended with the last shreds of Tomasin's sanity being shattered as she wanders off nude into the forest to die of exposure.

But that does not account for the witch that shows up at the beginning of the movie. For your theory to be correct, we must accept that the director war purposefully trying to mislead us with a scene that did not happen and could not have been imagined by any of the characters, since none of them were present and only went into the woods later in the movie.
I was never in doubt that the witches were there and Thomasin became one in the end (good for her, also!).

I kind of like the "ergotism/madness" explanation, but I think I prefer to suspend my disbelief and take it at face value - mostly. Though I also like to inject some Lovecraftian mythos into it, with the whole Christian angle being the family's interpretation of the eldritch horrors that are consuming them. Iä! Shub-Niggurath! Iä! Cthulhu fhtagn!

I feel sorry for Caleb because he gets a lot of unwarranted hate. Dude is coming of age in a Puritan society. He has normal teenage curiosities/awkwardness. He's not evil/lustful/incestuous. He's an awkward boy forced to make sense of a cruel and harsh world where religious fundamentalist rules are taken to the extreme. His sister is the only similar aged female he will ever encounter until adulthood because his family is persona-non-grata with the rest of the community. Being curious about her tits is not evidence that he is a pervert or a weirdo, the mf is 10-12 years old and lives in a society where ANY view of the body is sinful and shameful. Give the mf a break he's a curious 12 year old not a damn psycho pervert. He never expresses or evidences any unhealthy desires toward his sister, he is merely curious of her body. For a young man who has never been socialized with other young women, I can forgive him for this.

3 questions that I still have about the movie are: Did the twins in fact make a deal with Black Phillip? I noticed that when the family was praying for Caleb, the twins said they could not say the prayer, and it had been said that Black Philip talked to the twins. Question 2: What happened to the twins? It shows the father being killed , The mother being killed and Thomasine becoming a witch, but what actually happened to the twins? Last question, they showed the young witch that seduced Caleb and then the horrible looking witch towards the end...were they the same witch? In the scene where the witch kisses Caleb, they show her hand changing to look like an old, wrinkled hand which leads me to think that the witch created the illusion of being young and attractive to trick Caleb and then we see how she really looks at the end...or were they 2 different witches?

I think they did since he ended up being the devil and they chanted that song about him. The twins are "supposedly" in the fire in the end for the witches. Yeah, it's the same witch that was in the end. She was around when Black Philip was.

The witch that seduced cayleb was the same one both young and old. The witch killed the baby and used his blood to basically make herself look younger to lure cayleb in. That's why her hand looked old when she grabbed his head...she didn't have enough blood to complete the ritual

I think this movie is meant to be left open for our own interpretation. people who are disagreeing and getting angry honestly have no right. witches were known to rub their broomsticks with something called, "flying ointment." it's said that witches were able to fly to the Sabbath on their brooms with the help of the ointment, which was made from various poisonous herbs, and a fatty base. after she kills thd baby, she's seem rubbing the blood and innards all over herself, and stick. Normally when babies were sacrificed to sstan for rituals, they were stabbed in the head with a large needle, and then burned. none of those things happened. I think it's called the witch because it's about thomison becoming a witch. black Philip turned her family against her, and then killed the only person who was on her side.(her father) I'm pretty sure the picturd on the cover is thomison as well. I'm not saying the witch in thd woods had zero involvement, but I feel that it was more black Philip than anything.

The thing is the whole witches fly on broom sticks thing was created by Christianity. In paganism a witches broom ie a besom is for clearing away negative energy (that is literally what it's for).

    • @EmilReiko
      @EmilReiko 2 роки тому

@@NeloBladeOfRanni show me the evidence of brooms in pre-christian magic or tradition... There are other things, staves and spindles - but it being a broom is newer concraption of superstition and seem not to have really been a part of the practices of actual cunning men and women. The christian conception of the witch flying is a cultural misinterpretation of the shamanist'esque practices of going places with your soul or mind that was also common in pre-conversion northern european spiritualities as well as still around for centuries there after.

The first time I viewed this movie was in theatres and I found some parts extremely hard to understand as far as the dialogue and I left theatres being confused/not crazy about the film but knew there was something special about it. I decided once it came out DVD to purchase the film for a second viewing and wanted to watch it with the subtitles on. Once being to understand exactly what everyone is saying I realized I missed so many little things that lead to the ultimate brilliant story! This is now one of my favorite films and I respect the hell out of it!! Seriously, watch it with subtitles because it's an entirely different experience.

Fun fact about the Cathedral near my town:
Back in middle age, the architect made a pact with the devil, he said if he finish the top of the Cathedral before he die, he will give his soul, the devil accepted. However the top was never finished and the architect died, the devil was tricked by a human. I find this story funny, for how the devil got recked by a mortal by his own game.

Really enjoyed this, particularly your observation of the woodpile as analogue William's impotent masculinity. Aside from his pride and Caleb's lust I saw Katherine's depression leading to envy and Thomasin's frustration as wrath. As this is fairly evident do you think this might be a mistake of the director in imposing a more medieval theology of vice onto an early modern narrative.
Unrelated, I loved how the devil was kept in the background yet tipping and prodding the characters down the road to destruction.

I think a lot of people are missing the entire point of the movie. It is subtitled "A New England Folktale". This is something that a patriarch in the 17th century would tell to his children in order to teach a moral lesson according to Puritan values. We have to envision ourselves as those children listening at his knee. It is a visually interpreted cautionary tale of what happens according to their belief if sins are committed.

@Soon Forgot "But there are clues about different interpretations. So, for example, the rot on the corn is ergot, which is a hallucinogenic fungus, so if you wanted to take that route, you could. It’s not necessarily my route, but there are multiple ways in." -Eggers, Slate Magazine interview. slate.com/culture/2016/02/the-witch-director-robert-eggers-on-the-real-history-behind-the-movies-most-wtf-scenes.html
Not sure what source you are working off of, but I take this as the exact opposite of director confirmation. He's saying here that that's one valid explanation (and it's certain our best modern explanation for the events surrounding most New England witch panics), but not it's even his preferred reading of his story.

When i watched the movie my take on His excommunication was He was right in Hs doctrine of Faith - if this was meant to show Prideful conceit it was not a strong one, how ever as a servant of God he is supposed to submit to the authorities that have been put over Him and his family. Thus once separated from the "Pack" he is a prime target of the evil one which was the plan from the beginning- its not by accident that the devil is portrayed as a roaring lion that roams the earth seeking the ruin of souls. Lions main method of hunting is to separate the weakest of the heard from the others. I felt that it was the Fathers fault because he was not prepared to leave the community - he had 1 rifle and once that was gone- they were screwed, plus the horse and something else was lost further putting them hole (actually the kids did it but hes responsible). But ultimately the familys downfall is there wrong beliefs - Puritans put works over grace and Christianity is not moralism. While we were still sinners (mess ups, failures etc.) Christ died for us We are saved by grace- The Gospel (good news ) is we trust God, believe and that is counted as righteousness. wow too long a comment sorry.

Ehm.. Jesus is also represented by a lion as lion have a strong symbolism related to royalty (hence the many lions you see in heraldry) and JC beign of royal blood. That's why Aslan (the talking lion) in the Narnia series is a on the nose reference to JC.
