Exclusive videos and thoughts about tech, behind the scenes of how I make videos and building stuff on the internet
This video is a very dear one to me as an Italian because it might seem crazy now, but back in the day Italy actually had a chance to become Silicon Valley. This is the wild, untold story of Olivetti, of how Italy built the first programmable desktop computer, the Programma 101, and how everything came to a very sad end. This video is also a cautionary tale: how failing to recognize genius people and genius ideas gets you from developing something that's 10 years ahead of everyone else in the most important revolution of the last centirues, to not being able to capitalize on it and lose the race. I hope you enjoy!

Thanks for the amazing story, never heard of this before. Italy as today's Silicon Valley would be such a dope alternate timeline.
If only I had a DeLorean..
@@enricotartarotti -- so many companies in the US and around the world failed or were "almost there". Apple started, not with the Macintosh computer (GUI based) yet with a more primitive hobby machine - the Apple I and then the Apple //, Apple //e - this this was "allowed" because their main engineer, Steve Wozniack, gave HP a crack at the design. HP, at the time could not understand what any normal person would want with a "personal computer". This started Apple, then IBM PC, then PC Clones (HP, Compaq, etc...) then windows based operating systems (GUI, Macintosh, MS Windows and others) ...
Maybe the Italian company, was just too early? The Olivetti design looks interesting, yet even Apple worked off the backs of Parc-Xerox and other companies - so too did Microsoft. IBM was creating mechanical computers, before electronic ones and their IBM PC was not "long lived" yet made some progress and then the clones took over.
Now "most" computers are mobile phones, though I would not call them "smart" in any real way - though they can be useful.
gotta say tho , one of the reasons as to why Italy is considered to be one of the most beautiful places on earth is because it kept being ... it self never going forward , heck even our school stystems don't make any sense now , so maybe if it actually evolved it could've had ... broken into pieces of groups fighting against each other while the place burned down because of the differences in feelings about adopting the future... but this is just a theory. A TIMELINE THEORY!
As an Italian, I am happy to see another Italian telling this story here on UA-cam!
Grazie Enri' :)
ecco!
My dad has a Olivetti printer and we’ve never had to refill any colors in the over 5yrs we’ve had it
My favorite tidbit about the Olivetti Store in San Marco is how after closure and before the museum it became a souvenir shop, one of those ones that plague Venice on every corner with cheap knockoffs for tourists
I find it pretty emblematic for Italy as a whole
It is evident that you really put your heart in this video, awesome in every aspect. It is a shame that this story is mostly forgotten here, but thank you for bringing it up and narrating it with the heart in your hand
Beautiful and sad ending at 14:32 but unfortunately true, it's very hard to build without supporting environment.
Awesome video. Great to see this story more widely recognized! 👏
Good work, Enrico.
Best video ever on your channel. Grande Enrico!
Incredible video. Thank you so much for sharing
Da brividi! Complimenti Enrico! 👏👏👏
Thanks a lot for your blog! It’s like a good Netflix series.
I spent 2h with you this morning!!!
Heading to Italy in a week, neat video to see.
this is brilliant work.
Thanks Enrico, you should make an Italian version of this as, sadly speaking, a lot of Italians don't know anything of this. Such a wasted opportunity with a lot of missed turning points
Excellent video. Thank you.
Fabulous story sir.
bellissimo video vecchio! grande
Amazing. Not the stiry but your research, editing, and lessons learned.
I had no idea!
Many thanks for the video. You are a very good person. So wise, deep and honest.
Inspiring!
Grazie Enrico, che video magnifico. “Quasi.”
That is amaizing!
great video. i was recently in venice unfortunatly I did not know about it then
Italy 1940's: 2 months maternity leave required
USA 2020's: 0 months maternity leave required
Sensazionale :)
What a beautiful video
had no idea about this part of the history
very moving story
Every time I hear this story I feel depressed for our old Italy. Great work Enrico you’re a spark ⚡️
Thanks Enrico for sharing the amazing story of Olivetti ✌🏼 especially in English. Great storytelling also (as always) ❤
Venice is really nice off season 😊
Olivetti, my favorite tech brand as a kid. I remember my D2000 fondly (as fondly as the Olivetti sci calculators - those were amazing!).
This video was beautiful
Love that Olivetti store and Carlo Scarpa
Agree that things need a scene and support structure around it. There are many contemporary examples of places that are materially rich, that throw a bucket load of money at the problem but there is a lack of the human energy, spirit, passion to take the sparks and turn them into something.
Great video! I love your storytelling of this fascinating story I have never heard of before
I’m probably biased because I’m Italian but this is the best video you’re ever made until today. Grande Enrico
This is such an amazing story and a great production. Thanks!
Capolavoro, Enrico.
This is an excellent bit of computing and R&D history I didn't even know happened. Thanks mate.
The first PC we had at home was an Olivetti M22.
To me, it was the first PC brand I've ever heard of when I was 3 years old.
The lack of foresight of some Italian entrepreneurs can also be seen in Carlo de Benedetti, who in the 1980s said no to financing milione dollars to Steve Jobs' saying: we can't waste time with these young people, we have more important things to do
mi hai rapito dal primo minuto, come sempre 😁
Maybe in a parallel universe, Italy did become a technological powerhouse. Would have loved to see that. Great documentary dude! Loved it.
There are so many similar stories from almost every rich country. Germany once had large tech companies, but they stopped innovating and couldn't keep up with the Americans.
My family had one of their typewriters when I was a kid.
I like the story, and the parallels you managed to make with Sillicon Valley, however forced they may have felt.
One of your best videos, if not the best.
Proud!
Impeccable storytelling and very eye-catching editing! Veramente ben fatto!
The color grade is pretty good in 14:57
Italy will always have a special place in my heart, and I for one would have loved it to have been the birth place of silicon valley instead of the USA. My home country of Scotland had a small future in the 80s and 90s too with its own 'Silicon Glen', but as many Scottish innovations, it fumbles at the last minute (like us and football!). Great video! Keep up the good work!
Molto interesante.
This shows me that I'd like to see less centralisation as in companies that are for X. Maybe this would also lead to more human focused companies, which I already knew that I want^^.
The Programma 101 only weighs 35 kgs, but it puts my back out whenever I have to move mine!
Storia incredibile e anche d'ispirazione
you really should talk about "proyecto synco"
pd: f the ClA
I used to sell some Olivetti Netstrada servers in the 90ies. It has been one of the best companies ever.
It was so sad to see all this disintegrating and disappearin....
Have you ever heard of the late 1990's push by an Italian company to start a more secure alternate internet?
Some times the situation is to blame
If they succeded, we would be speaking Italian on the internet instead of English, and honestly, that would save a lot of headaches and spare students from learning English.
I don't think Olivetti was ever going to drive a new Silicon valley, but I do remember one Olivetti PC which had a very nice keyboard. And the system had very nice design, too.
Actually there’s a thing he missed… in 1998 TIM (telecom italian) places an offer to buy Apple. Yes that Apple that is now worth 3 trillion dollars.
The quality and storytelling in this video are mind blowing and make me proud of you as an Italian man.
I'm not a big fan of conspiracy theories, but I wouldn't be surprised if the CIA really was behind it all, considering the historical time. After all we were like a bridge between the USSR and the West (we're still riddled with brain dead Putin stans nowadays so I can only imagine how it was right after WW2) so it wouldn't be surprising. But I wouldn't be too mad about it given the context.
With no guaranteed and irrefutable proof that's all it is anyways, just a theory.
Intresting story with Telefone, radio....this inventions were in the air at this time. A lot of inventors in different countries were struggling under development of this technology more or less at the same time.
But we may easily name only the Name of the one who bouilt the business with this idea.
Italian genius 💻🇮🇹🦅
❤
This is my "roman empire" that i think about every day... che grandissimo peccato
Well, nowadays we could have again that opportunity, afterall Italy Is the most Advanced country (with Japan) to Building robot, maybe if we wouldn't have the fiscal office that we have, we could Shine like the 'old days
4:55 in this small village in barbarinchina, surrounded by farmlands, vineyards, and uhm, millions of tourists annually. I mean, you also don't say that London is a small city. Technically true, but your missing the elephant in the room.
Very interesting, it does make me kind of sad that nowadays things like AI take huge supercomputers and millions of dollars to develop. Back then a small scale team could actually create a groundbreaking product, but nowadays creating your own chips takes billions of dollars.
Rest in Peace
This was amazing. In high school in the 1970's I was the proud owner of an Olivetti portable typewriter. Got me through college, too. It was a very smooth machine, bright turquoise. Made in Barcelona, Spain.
Please someone give me the cover image 😭😭😭
midjourney + photoshop!
A suspicious amount of people's lives ended prematurely 🤔
Pitty!
As soon as a crack is mentioned a flaw in the company. My first thought as always has to do with bank created fiat money enslaving a company to unpayable debts. /governments eroding of business's capability to grow and multiply through horrendous. Government structure/interference. let's see if either these aren't correct probably both.
Cazzo...
god that's not good
but this is a great story
The last part hit sooo close to home :)
sparks need a favourable environment to turn into fire… there’s no Michelangelo without Renaissance, no Jobs/Gates without Silicon Valley…
I totally agree with that last part and it was great to hear somebody else put this into words
Keep up the good work :)
This story makes me feel sad every time, thinking about the future of our country. But people like you demonstrate there is still hope. 🚀
Beautiful video and interesting story, good job! But at one point you get carried away by your own good storytelling. You talk about a meeting in the 1960's where a decision was made that was probably "The most consequential in the history of Italy" 8:40. Let's take a random sneak peak at other important decisions made in the history of Italy 1) Council of Nicea (325 AD) where key Christian doctrines were established, 2) Italy’s decision to switch sides in World War II by signing an armistice with the Allies had profound consequences, leading to the downfall of Mussolini’s fascist regime and shaping Italy’s post-war political landscape, 3) The signing of the Treaty of Rome marked the foundation of the European Economic Community, and eventually the European Union.
Maybe one the decision you refer to was more in the lines of being one of the most consequential for the "Modern history of Italien business" 😅
Otherwise still a good job with the video, and you really shine in your other tech videos. I'm just tired of good storytellers creating simplified narratives and axing the beauty, depth and complexity of human history and the human condition. And sensationalist sentences and narratives like saying a tech-related decision was (probably) the most consequential in the history of a country just too simplistic and ignorant of power structures and politics (although, yes, an Italien based Silicon Valley would have changed many things for Italy and European economies and in power relations, that is true... But still)
Ok. Got that out of my system. Keep up your good, Enrico ❤
Wow Enrico. This video is just perfect and should make everyone think about the importance of the right environment to turn an idea, a spark, into reality. Italy is not the best place to start a new business today, as it was in the days of Olivetti, mainly because of the lack of a mature financial market. This probably helps old and powerful entrepreneurs, not young ones, and limits innovation. Unfortunately, not much has changed in recent years.
Early gang
I’m very confused why your videos don’t get good views even your editing is as creative as any other good documentarian.
This video should definitely be called “how Italy almost became Silicon Valley” - killed feels disingenuous
Glad it didnt'
Why?
Amazing story 🫱🏻🫲🏼
