Exclusive videos and thoughts about tech, behind the scenes of how I make videos and building stuff on the internet
This video is a very dear one to me as an Italian because it might seem crazy now, but back in the day Italy actually had a chance to become Silicon Valley. This is the wild, untold story of Olivetti, of how Italy built the first programmable desktop computer, the Programma 101, and how everything came to a very sad end. This video is also a cautionary tale: how failing to recognize genius people and genius ideas gets you from developing something that's 10 years ahead of everyone else in the most important revolution of the last centirues, to not being able to capitalize on it and lose the race. I hope you enjoy!

@@enricotartarotti -- so many companies in the US and around the world failed or were "almost there". Apple started, not with the Macintosh computer (GUI based) yet with a more primitive hobby machine - the Apple I and then the Apple //, Apple //e - this this was "allowed" because their main engineer, Steve Wozniack, gave HP a crack at the design. HP, at the time could not understand what any normal person would want with a "personal computer". This started Apple, then IBM PC, then PC Clones (HP, Compaq, etc...) then windows based operating systems (GUI, Macintosh, MS Windows and others) ...
Maybe the Italian company, was just too early? The Olivetti design looks interesting, yet even Apple worked off the backs of Parc-Xerox and other companies - so too did Microsoft. IBM was creating mechanical computers, before electronic ones and their IBM PC was not "long lived" yet made some progress and then the clones took over.
Now "most" computers are mobile phones, though I would not call them "smart" in any real way - though they can be useful.

gotta say tho , one of the reasons as to why Italy is considered to be one of the most beautiful places on earth is because it kept being ... it self never going forward , heck even our school stystems don't make any sense now , so maybe if it actually evolved it could've had ... broken into pieces of groups fighting against each other while the place burned down because of the differences in feelings about adopting the future... but this is just a theory. A TIMELINE THEORY!

My favorite tidbit about the Olivetti Store in San Marco is how after closure and before the museum it became a souvenir shop, one of those ones that plague Venice on every corner with cheap knockoffs for tourists
I find it pretty emblematic for Italy as a whole

Sensazionale :)

Agree that things need a scene and support structure around it. There are many contemporary examples of places that are materially rich, that throw a bucket load of money at the problem but there is a lack of the human energy, spirit, passion to take the sparks and turn them into something.

The lack of foresight of some Italian entrepreneurs can also be seen in Carlo de Benedetti, who in the 1980s said no to financing milione dollars to Steve Jobs' saying: we can't waste time with these young people, we have more important things to do

Italy will always have a special place in my heart, and I for one would have loved it to have been the birth place of silicon valley instead of the USA. My home country of Scotland had a small future in the 80s and 90s too with its own 'Silicon Glen', but as many Scottish innovations, it fumbles at the last minute (like us and football!). The quality and storytelling in this video are mind blowing and make me proud of you as an Italian man.
I'm not a big fan of conspiracy theories, but I wouldn't be surprised if the CIA really was behind it all, considering the historical time. After all we were like a bridge between the USSR and the West (we're still riddled with brain dead Putin stans nowadays so I can only imagine how it was right after WW2) so it wouldn't be surprising. But I wouldn't be too mad about it given the context.
With no guaranteed and irrefutable proof that's all it is anyways, just a theory.

Government structure/interference. let's see if either these aren't correct probably both.

Beautiful video and interesting story, good job! But at one point you get carried away by your own good storytelling. You talk about a meeting in the 1960's where a decision was made that was probably "The most consequential in the history of Italy" 8:40. Let's take a random sneak peak at other important decisions made in the history of Italy 1) Council of Nicea (325 AD) where key Christian doctrines were established, 2) Italy’s decision to switch sides in World War II by signing an armistice with the Allies had profound consequences, leading to the downfall of Mussolini’s fascist regime and shaping Italy’s post-war political landscape, 3) The signing of the Treaty of Rome marked the foundation of the European Economic Community, and eventually the European Union.
Maybe one the decision you refer to was more in the lines of being one of the most consequential for the "Modern history of Italien business" 😅
Otherwise still a good job with the video, and you really shine in your other tech videos. I'm just tired of good storytellers creating simplified narratives and axing the beauty, depth and complexity of human history and the human condition. And sensationalist sentences and narratives like saying a tech-related decision was (probably) the most consequential in the history of a country just too simplistic and ignorant of power structures and politics (although, yes, an Italien based Silicon Valley would have changed many things for Italy and European economies and in power relations, that is true... But still)
Ok. Got that out of my system. Keep up your good, Enrico ❤

  • @GiovanniCome
    @GiovanniCome 4 місяці тому

Wow Enrico. This video is just perfect and should make everyone think about the importance of the right environment to turn an idea, a spark, into reality. Italy is not the best place to start a new business today, as it was in the days of Olivetti, mainly because of the lack of a mature financial market. This probably helps old and powerful entrepreneurs, not young ones, and limits innovation. Unfortunately, not much has changed in recent years.
