This original version is an all time favorite of mine, it's super creepy but beautifully shot and feels like it could happen. Great job as always guys.
The sequel, "Revenge of the Stepford Wives" made in the 1980s is great because it answers a lot more questions and shows the revenge. There's the "Stepford Children" and the "Stepford Husbands" as sequels.
Decades later this film still is creepy as hell to me. Paula Prentiss is married to Richard Benjamin. Peter Masterson's real like daughter plays one of Eberhart kids, Mary Stuart Masterson. He directed the 1989 crime thriller Night Game, starring Roy Schneider.
The original still holds up quite well. Katherine Ross is charming and likable that you feel terrible when the ending comes round & swallows her up. Never read Levin’s novel, but did read “Rosemary’s Baby” and he wrote it well (the film adaptation did a great job converting to screen).
This movie was great - thoroughly creepy, subtle, thought provoking & engaging. I only saw it once a few years back but I was glad to finally check it out. I'm glad you mentioned the grocery store scene, the check writing, there's so many little moments like that. The movie is a snapshot of another time. Awesome discussion fellas.
Very good movie, nice eerie atmosphere. Ross was also in the great The Legacy (1978), O'Neal always made a slimy villain like his guest turn on Columbo (1972).
I have vague memories of seeing this as a kid on the telly in the 80s, but I don't think I've seen it since. It doesn't seem to be on Blu ray, surprisingly. :(
Excellent! I've never seen this one before. It's one that I've always assumed wasn't for me, but I think you guys sold me on it. I may have to check it out sometime as it does look pretty interesting.
This movie should be mandatory viewing for everyone, not just horror/thriller fans, but for everyone, because of what it has to say about us as a society.
Watched this movie and it was so creepy but truly an incredible piece of work. It would be interesting to see another remake of it in 2024 I could honestly see America Ferrera playing the Joanna role very well especially after her performance in the Barbie movie.
Really interesting film. I haven't watched the remake but going by the trailer, it seemed like they went completely for comedy at the expense of creepiness and subtlety. Great video, guys!
It’s really creepy without jump scares or any actual murder. Just the thought of replacing women with AI who just want to be baby factories and housewives is haunting for an independent woman like Johanna
I got to finish this on Tubi, saw most of it then fell asleep, woke to look for it but then saw they had a movie called “death smiles on a murderer” and forgot haha thanks again for introducing me to Tubi! 🍻
@@FrightfullyForgotten screw Netflix Tubi is the way to go! Although back when Netflix did come out it had a very good horror selection, I saw pieces on there and was blown away, along with tetsuo the iron man which gave me nightmares. And after I get home I’ll finish the movie. Looking forward to what you guys cover next 🍻
Is that the only thing you know Paula Prentiss from? She's pretty great. Her TV show with Richard Benjamin is considered a forerunner of the Mary Tyler Moore show style of sitcom and she was in at least one Howard Hawks movie.
I love love love Paula Prentiss in this, her dialogue was sampled on 'Hey Music Lover by S' Express. The problematic (read: interesting) part of this movie is that Levin (perhaps) saw feminism as a fad/'cult' of the then 1970s times and skewered it accordingly. The dull, dull men have their club and the women have their photography and nipples in the breeze - both are equally banal ultimately and the film never resolves this conundrum. The unsaid horror is that such boring, doltish, reductive people (man throws scotch into fireplace/ woman makes money from photographing ethnic youths in crisis) ever got to be to be menaced by the fear of becoming automatons - they were already there. Mind you, Paula Prentiss is sexy as hell and the final scene, respect to your approach, so no spoilers is a haunting and exquisitely handled pants-shitter.
I love the Stepford wives. It actually scared me with that ending. The men are the idiots LOL! I would like to see a cross over of The Stepford wives vs Westworld
The evil turtleneck guy reminds me of that shitty professor dude from Friday the 13th part 8. Looks like they're both unlucky with women haha. Another great review of a classic. Cheers!
This original version is an all time favorite of mine, it's super creepy but beautifully shot and feels like it could happen. Great job as always guys.
We haven't seen the remake and don't plan on it. Fuck the remake haha!!
No one writes uncomfortably realistic yet oddly funny psychological horror like Ira Levin.
The sequel, "Revenge of the Stepford Wives" made in the 1980s is great because it answers a lot more questions and shows the revenge. There's the "Stepford Children" and the "Stepford Husbands" as sequels.
Yeah, we have yet to see any of the sequels, find it hard that they could live up to the original.
The main Horror of this film is that Ross served her husband - Taster's Choice Instant Coffee.
haha that stuff reminds me of my Grandpa

Due to the content of this film it will always be relevant and creepy.

Yeah was curious about the novel too. Should pick it up some day, lots of reading to do.

haha who didn't guest star on Columbo as a villain?
@@FrightfullyForgotten Vincent Price--although he was on Columbo, he was not the guest murderer.

Your guy's stuff just keeps getting better. This one was great. Have a frightful Friday, gents!

Love this movie! Such a cool twist (several twist). Super glad to see you guys review it. Have a great weekend!
Yeah we're glad this one was requested, it made for a fun shoot and a good episode. Cheers man!

Actually we're not super familiar with her work besides What's New Pussycat haha cause we're Peter Sellers fans.
Good review of a scary film that's kinda funny in a way. This was on TV a lot when I was a kid.
Scary and Funny is exactly how we like our films! Cheers Doug!

I think Joanna actually stabs Bobbie a little under the stomach in "that" special area.
haha, the ovaries!?

This is a classic psychological horror that doesn't get talked about enough for some reason.

It reminds me a lot of Invasion of the body snatchers
Oh for sure. Lots of parallels
Are the stepford wives sisters?
Gotta watch the movie to find out!
Oh, it's a horror movie. Definitely.
AH, yes glad you agree with us on that,
Sorry, but the P.O.S. remark stopped me from listening. It truly is possible to have an intellectual discussion without the use of curse words!
First fuck yeah
