I can't believe that after all these years, I was totally wrong about "The Boy Who Predicted Earthquakes." Granted that I haven't watched it recently, but I'm old enough to say that Night Gallery was my favorite show when it first aired, and I've seen that episode many times. The way I recall what happened was that the boy knew the event was going to occur but didn't know what it was called until he read about it. In that scenario, the boy's reading about it didn't cause the event, it merely defined and clarified it for him. He didn't will it to happen. It was still a prediction, just one he understandably didnt want to share. Big difference.Thanks for clearing that up.

The way it was written, the kid could only predict things he knew about. If he hadn't gotten the book on space, and hadn't read about stars going nova, he wouldn't have been able to predict the nova occuring to the sun.
@@williamanthony9090I think the kid actually caused the events to happen as a Supernova would only occur in 5-10 BILLION years! He hastened it to mere days after reading about it. All the predictions he gave I believe he subconsciously affected. They should have locked the kid up in solitary confinement with no outside information, he was the most dangerous being
"They're Tearing Down Tim Riley's Bar" is so true to life! As we get older we are either appreciated or kicked in the butt... sadly, most of us get the latter. When we lose most of our family members and end up completely alone, it's very easy to live in the past and wish we were reunited once more.
Night Gallery should've had more psychological episode like that instead of purely supernatural ones- it really is a breath of fresh air among the episode list

@@NaughtyVampireGod I don't think so- much like with Twilight Zone, quite a few Night Gallery episodes have what could be called a happy ending. Tim Riley's Bar is unique in that it feels like a Twilight Zone episode- an intimate character study of a mentally broken person at their lowest point, reminiscent of A Stop at Willoughby or In Praise Of Pip. In addition, Tim Riley's Bar doesn't have any inherently supernatural elements which could not be explained by psychosis, and as such feels sorta like Where Is Everybody or Perchance To Dream
I particularly liked the episode "Big Surprise" - featuring the great horror actor,John Carradine - The story was written by the brilliant fantasy, horror, and science fiction author, Richard Matheson.

Big Surprise was taken from an O' Henry story. I believe, actually, that he was given credit at the beginning.
In 'The Boy who Predicted Earthquakes' the kid is only predicting events, he's not causing them to happen......'Since Aunt Ada Came to Stay' is my favorite episode....and I happen to love 'Fright Night'
If he doesn't cause them, how does the sun go supernova?
OK.......The kid explains at the start that he can only predict things he has knowledge of, like he predicted the little girl who was lost was going to found, he says if he hadn't known the girl was lost who would not have been able to predict that, just like he doesn't know anything about NOVAS or Super Novas ....until he reads a book on them, that's when he makes up this lie about the world being 'a better place' and 'a new day', because he wants people to think things are going to be like paradise, he doesn't want them to know the sun is going to explode.....I think Clint Howard did an amazing job in that role, it's one of my favorites because of his performance...anyway I enjoyed your review
@@tapeduk But the sun can't go supernova. Even in a billion years, it's not going supernova. As asteroid impact is more likely than the sun spontaneously exploding
@@NicolasSequeira I know, that has to blamed on the writer and this was the 1970's, but I think that was like 'what if' the sun exploded, that would make an interesting story
@@tapedukThey knew it back in the 1970s, so that's not much of an excuse. I can't feel threatened by something which is statistically impossible, and is never even explained within the episode's own internal logic. It's not interesting, it's bad writing. They may as well have just written in that everyone's head exploded at the end or something and it would make about as much sense
I agreed with you on virtually none of these except your choice of number 2 on the best list. Jeanette Nolan was one of the spookiest crones ever in the history of television. Good on ya, son. The Doll was good, it almost made me pee my pants when it first aired in 1971. But I think Certain Shadows on the Wall was the best episode of any Night Gallery episode myself. Cheers, dude. I enjoyed your commentary immensely. Especially coming from someone who wasn't even around when these shoes were on the air. Nice work.

I recently watched the whole 40 somethish episodes it took me over month after watching it through after your review, and I came out with my own list, Apparently, these were the ones I found scary and fun to watch too. I had to leave out some good ones such as; A Tune at Dan's cafe, the Girl with the hungry eyes, The ghost of Sorthwood, Midnight never ends, A fear of Spiders, Pickmann's model, make me laugh, a Feast of blood, The last rite of a Druid, The Sins of the Fathers and the Doll
Just for the record, " The red velver ropes" I.explained it as the main character being cursed after accidently killing his opponent in the fighting match. He had to " lose" just like Mrs Blanco told him, at the red velvet rope ring to break the spell and freed into the "real" world. Infact, that was some real witch in " The fear of spiders".
Overall, I found on Rod Serling's Night Gallery 1st and 2nd season most episodes very entertaining. Awesome review, take easy then..
The third season does have some gems, but I would tend to agree that most of the really good ones are in seasons 1 and 2

“They’re tearing down Tim Riley’s Bar” is my absolute favorite. I actually loved the “Boy who predicted earthquakes” because of the deliberate choice he makes to try to not panic people even though he knows that the world is going to end the next day. Some other favorites are “There aren’t any more McBanes” “Pickman’s Model”, “Tell David”,“ Silent snow, secret snow” “The sin eater”, and “Hells bells”. For me the worst episode was “She’ll be company for you” Leonard Nimoy was completely wasted in that stupid story

kornwhiskey95 “If You Leave Me Tonight I’ll Cry” sung by Jerry Wallace and was on Billboard’s Top Forty List for 16 weeks, starting July 29th, 1972 reaching number one, on the Country Western Charts, for two weeks 🤠💀💿📻 ( the tune was specifically written for that particular episode of “Night Gallery”, and was so popular that Decca had Wallace cut a record for it and was played on country radio stations nationwide with listeners calling in and requesting local DJ’s play that tune. Ironically, many listeners never saw the Night Gallery episode, but they liked the song ) 🤠

To say "The Caterpillar" is the worst NG episode is beyond ludicrous. No only is it generally regarded as one of the best episodes by fans, but it's also one of the scariest anthology episodes in the history of the horror genre. Laurence Harvey's performance is phenomenal and gut-wrenching. The direction by Jeannot Szwarc brilliantly captures the creepiness of the story. Even Stephen King and Guillermo del Toro have rated it as one the scariest things they've ever seen. You should check out the book, "Night Gallery: An After-Hours Tour" by Jim Benson and Scott Skelton. Every episode is critically analyzed, and there are some great photos.

I started watching Night Gallery secretly when I was in 8th grade. I had nights where I would stay the night at my grandparent's house, and I would borrow their laptop when I went to bed, and watched it on Hulu. My parents found out I liked the show, and bought me the DVD series for my 15th birthday and Christmas. My favorites in no particular order would probably be Class of 99, A Feast of Blood, The Diary, You Can't Get Help Like That Anymore and Midnight Never Ends. As for A Fear of Spiders, I have seen it multiple times, but have never been able to get myself to look at the spider when it is the size of a dog, because I also have really bad arachniphobia, which I guess is ironic because it was the first episode I watched, and I threw a blanket over my head.

That's a pretty solid list there. If the "best" episodes on this list were ranked according to quality instead of fear factor, Waiting Room and Question of Fear might be on it
Nicolas Sequeira Those episodes were two of my favorites, especially “The Waiting Room” ! As a kid, growing up in the Fifties and Sixties, I loved watching Westerns ( which mostly dominated t.v.at that time ) and supernatural / science fiction / mystery / horror programs like “Twilight Zone”, “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”, “One Step Beyond”, “Thriller” ( with Boris Karloff ), and “The Outer Limits” . “The Waiting Room” ( written by Rod Serling ) had solid acting, superior dialogue, and a great ( eerie ) storyline . Many of the actors, featured in that episode, had starred as outlaws and gunfighters in numerous t.v. westerns of that era ( “Gunsmoke”, “Bonanza”, “Rawhide”, “Have Gun-Will Travel” to name but a few ), ... And to think this was what might have happened to them ( in the end ) made the episode that much more chilling !!! 👹💀
You're completely misunderstanding how the Boy Who Predicted Earthquakes' powers worked. He didn't cause any of those things to happen, but in order to be able to predict them, he had to be aware of them. If he didn't know that a girl was missing, he wouldn't have been able to predict her rescue. It is perhaps a bit coincidental that he just happened to read about supernovas just before it was to happen, but I can let it pass.

But how can one predict any event which is scientifically impossible? How can the sun, one of the most stable and predictable phenomena in the observable universe, spontaneously explode in under a week with none of the world's observatories or scientists predicting the event before this random child does?

I guess I'd generally recommend Rollerball, THX 1138, Metropolis, Alphaville, Forbidden Planet, and Planet Of The Apes for starters
The "Gary Collins episodes" were actually a whole separate series called "The Sixth Sense" that was folded into NG's syndication package, so it's not fair to consider them a legitimate part of the show.
The point about the haunted house genre "not really taking off" until "The Amityville Horror"? I beg to differ; there was "The Legend of Hell House" (1973), "The Haunting" (1963), which also spawned the current Netflix series "The Haunting of Hill House" and so many others before 1979. Growing up in the '70s, I remember seeing countless haunted house movies and TV-movies well before "The Amityville Horror" (a somewhat overrated entry, IMO; 1980's "The Changeling" was far superior).
I also sharply disagree on "Dr. Stringfellow's Rejuvenator"; the difference between it and Twilight Zone's "Mr. Garrity..." episode is that Stringfellow's fate is interpretative; it's either from a vengeful ghost or guilty conscience; the episode lets the audience determine which, as do the best ghost stories.
"The Caterpillar" is also one of the best suspense stories of 1970s television. All of its best, most terrifying moments are allowed to happen in the audience's mind. It's one of the things that's very much missing in much of today's horror.
I know The Sixth Sense is a separate show, but syndication packages are too complicated, and there's already a Bruce Willis movie called The Sixth Sense, so I always consider them a part of Night Gallery- the garbage fourth season, if you will. Nonetheless, they're such a steep drop in quality and tone that I haven't included any of them on this list. If I had, they'd all be Gary Collins ones.
The haunted house genre as we know it today didn't take off until 1979 with Amityville. House On haunted Hill and the like belong to a separate genre- the "old dark house" genre. There are some subtle differences between the two, but they are there. "Fright Night" is an example of an early episode trying to get in the haunted house game, but the plot is coherent and the acting isn't anything to write home about. While the formula is the same as what you'd see in Amityville or Paranormal Activity (Young couple moves in, supernatural events start occurring) but it really drops the ball. Hence its spot on the worst list.
As for your remark on Dr. Stringfellow, the best ghost stories aren't about audience interpretation, the best ghost stories are scary. You can be literal and still be scary. That's why Mr. Garrity works, the camera shows the zombies coming out of the graves and I as an audience member recognize them as a tangible threat. Regardless of whether or not you believe the best ghost stories incorporate audience interpretation, that point is irrelevant, as the ending of Dr. Stringfellow is about as clear as they come. he sees the ghost, the ghost is clearly there. If there wasn't a ghost, the camera wouldn't show the ghost. Dr. Stringfellow is nothing more than a cheap knockoff. The Waiting Room is clearly the superior Western episode, as it tells an original story.
I don't know how the most terrifying moments of "The Caterpillar" can happen in your mind- earwigs don't go into people's ears. I can't be scared by something which is biologically impossible. There are, of course, better and more effective ways to torture someone, which can really scare an audience- look at the Human Centipede or Saw movies, or Hostel- an earwig isn't one of those. If crappy urban legends about brain-eating insects are missing in today's horror, that's probably for the best, especially with an episode that takes itself as seriously as The Caterpillar. Thing doesn't have an ounce of self-awareness to it. It asks the viewer to legitimately believe that an earwig could survive days in a brain, and pass from ear to ear without breaking both eardrums or causing mental damage. I've studied ear anatomy, what the episode presents is patently impossible. If something is impossible, it's not scary. It's just a lie.
I love Gary Collins and the sixth sense; many of them were better than the night gallery episodes...your taste is lousy in the horror and science fiction tv genre..... I vote your review one of the 5 worst on you tube.
@@NicolasSequeira Rod Serling got paid 6 figures to do introductions to the Sixth Sense episodes after Night Gallery was done. They wanted to package these together for syndication. It wasn't very good, but did suffer from the editing to make it fit into Night Gallery.
@@NicolasSequeira Again with what's scientifically possible as a criteria for what's scary and what isn't. You sound like a tremendous bore. I'm willing to overlook that, but you're so arrogant about it, it's hard to. For what it's worth, I was alive when these episodes were in primetime. I remember how Henry Blake's death was the subject of so much conversation the day after that episode of MASH aired. In the same regard, everyone was talking about the earwig episode the day after it aired. Most of the episodes you mention hardly caused a ripple. Does that make people ignorant? Maybe. I'll take honest ignorance over willful arrogance any day of the week.
I'm actually about to watch Night Gallery for the very first time. Question. Were your honorable mentions part of the best or part of the worst?
Part of the best. I would recommend viewing the 3-part pilot before you hop into the show proper, it's a good introduction to the general themes and motifs of the show later on.
I figured I would agree with all the "worst" episodes but almost all of them, I can't imagine if you're even watching them! Then when I got to the key phrase "objectifying women," that was it....I was out.

I gotta agree, Former. Dude was totally off on what "The Boy Who Predicted Earthquakes" was about and how his psychic powers worked. It made me question if he actually watched the episode. Now, if Nicholas thinks it's a terrible episode, that's definitely his privilege and prerogative and I respect that. I don't think it's a great episode either, but it's hardly the worst. That would be The Different Ones. Bleech!!! Everyone's tastes are different. However, while I was ready to bail as well over Nicholas' missing of well-explained plot points, I did manage to watch all the way through. Of his top five, I wholeheartedly agreed with all but number 1.

I don't think so, I typically make sure to film when she's asleep or out somewhere. If you did, though, I guess that's neat
43 with multiple stories in each for seasons 1 & 2 when the show was an hour long. S1 shared it's slot with other shows so there were only 6 episodes. S2 was a full season then S3 was only a half hour and that's how they were shown in syndication. There were 93 stories shown on the show not including the Sixth Sense stuff. I think in The Boy Who Predicted Earthquakes, the boy doesn't cause the supernova to happen, he just now knows about what a supernova is and sees that one is about to happen. If this show is more about the supernatural, why does it have to conform to scientific thinking. Island of Lost Souls is a great film. The Night Gallery TV movie that came before the TV series had 2 great stories, The Cemetery and Escape Route which are very scary.
The show needs to conform to scientific thinking if there is no supernatural element in a given episode. If they were smarter, they would've had it be an asteroid hitting the Earth or something, which is entirely a believable scenario

was there an episode on night gallery or maybe it was the twilight zone where a woman likes a broach and is wearing it but i think its cursed and its some sort of bug but as she drives the car it gets bigger and eventually kills her.

"Pickman's Model" and "They're Tearing Down Tim Riley's Bar" -- my 2 favourite episodes of "The Night Gallery."
Tim Riley really packs the heat. Lots more character study and dramatic beats than other episodes

Did you see the little black bag in which burges meridith is an alcoholic doctor who finds a medical kit from the future? How would you rank/rate that one? It was based on a famous short story w the same title.
I would rate that one pretty highly, definitely in the top 10. I do think Burges Meredith has a lot of range and it's interesting to see the ways in which he applies himself to Night Gallery as opposed to Twilight Zone. I also find the concept of the advanced medical technology particularly unique. Haven't ever seen it replicated anywhere to such an effect

Dude, you sound like a burnout with your explanation of "The Boy Who Predicted Earthquakes." Nowhere in that episode... NOWHERE... Does it say, or imply, that the kid is causing those events to occur. (That's an assumption you've made, based on your dislike for faulty scientific knowledge.) Try watching that episode again, preferably when you aren't smoking pot!!!

I just got the all 3 seasons 10 dvd set and it says "98 stories of terror!" so I don't know how wiki was counting (maybe entire shows which had multiples which varied). I saw many of them back in the 70's as I am 57 y.o. The one that scared us to death as kids was "The Doll", and we really liked "The Cemetary"...so far I've only watched thru one of the disks and though I saw "The dark boy" in the 70's I think it is one of the better ones. "The painted mirror was entertaining but the roll played by Zsa Zsa Gabor was simply atrocious, playing those freaking cuban jazz records, man I'd have taking the scraper to her neck, forget killing her with dinosaurs inside the mirror:)
That said, no matter how cheesy the plot, even the short funny ones, I look forward to seeing them. Now to watch the first episode of the first season "the Cemetary"...Roddy McDowel told me tell you all "potifoy...potifoy...potifoy!"..
I think there are around 40 "episodes" but each "episode" is actually an hour long, and in syndication each episode is split up into 2 half-hour "episodes," some of which have up to 5 segments each. Maybe Night Gallery had a hard time getting its foot in the door because of the inconsistent formatting. That's something Twilight Zone never really struggled with.

@@magicalpasta5462 That's not true- Clint Howard's filmography is vast and contains multiple serious roles. I would argue his greatest performance is in the DS9 episode, "Past Tense Part II". I'd recommend checking it out for an example of Clint Howard's actual range as an actor
I think Night Gallery gets overlooked because it all kind of blends together in memory with Twilight Zone. I, myself would have sworn under penalty of law, and been wrong, that the earwig episode was from original TZ. Like, for decades till fan wikis and UA-cam vids like this came along.
I personally have never confused a Twilight Zone episode with a Night Gallery episode. This is mainly because whereas Twilight Zone is a standard TV show with relatively normal cinematography and a routine format, Night Gallery is an upgraded version for the 70s, a psychedelic roller-coaster ride that cuts in and out unpredictably, leaves stories hanging without resolution, and of course there's that epic synth

Much like how most people don't consider "The Cage" an official episode of Star Trek, I don't really consider the Night Gallery pilot an official episode of Night Gallery. While it is fantastic in its own right, I feel it's sort of unfair to include it here
The haunted house genre in movies was around for many years before night gallery . . my favorite is house on haunted hill (1959) . . . fear of spiders scared the shit outa me as a kid . . the movie enemy (2013) ripped off the ending of this episode i thought . . . feminism was a big thing starting in the mid/late 60's so seeing that in the early 70's should not be a surprize - in fact that was probably the peak of second wave feminism . . i was hoping you'd highlight some of the hp lovecraft episodes :( . . honestly i cannot understand you saying this was not a scary series . . it was horrifying especially for TV. . .
I think House On Haunted Hill falls more into the "Old Dark House" genre, whereas Fright Night marks the beginning of the modern-day haunted house genre that would include such entries as the Amityville Horror or Insidious, including many of the standards we today associate with such films

Usually in the modern ones there's an overt paranormal aspect. In House On Haunted Hill, by contrast, Vincent Price is manipulating everything behind the scenes and it has tones more akin to those of a murder mystery
@@NicolasSequeira That's true as to House on Haunted Hill - however there are older haunted house movies involving overt paranormal activies - i didn;t actually see it but I think The Haunting from 1963 fits into is category. (I saw the 90's remake.)

I would like to plug the short episode 'The Nature of the Enemy'. I believe a season 2 short segment. It was like only 5 minutes long but had potential if it was fleshed out with a longer time running. I know many didn't like the silly ending that there could be mice on the moon but I thought it was pretty suspenseful up to that ending shot.. and really one of the only Si-Fi stories on NG and wish there were more astronaut stories like The Twilight Zone had.
That is true, Nature Of The Enemy could've been good if it was a little longer, the cinematography was okey
The "host" doesn't mention any actors when the episode qualities depend heavily on the acting. The episode under scrutiny doesn't appear in lettering. He has bad judgement.
Acting is an aspect, however I would argue that writing, especially for speculative fiction, is more important, and even the best actors can't really make a terrible script work
But acting is also essential.
A few questions:
1. do you like the Ray Bradbury theater? - i am a big fan of his lierature - the tV series is another hit-ormiss for me . . one of my favorite stories got a terrible adaptation - the long rain - it was simply beyond their budget and should not have even been attempted - other stories such as the anthem runners were just right for small screen adaptations
2. i assume you are a Twilight Zone (original series ) fan - what are some of your fave episodes ? - or just direct me to that video if you did one
TBH it is nice talking to you - for whatever reason a lot of ppl think they have to act like clowns when they do YT videos - I wish more ppl would just act like themselves for a change - I was watching a video from a guy who did his favorite night stalker episodes and could not get through it b/c he was acting so ridiculous
I do plan on making a list of Ray Bradbury theater episodes eventually. I think it definitely deserves its own list. As for your point about Twilight Zone, I have made a "top 10 best" list and a "top 10 worst" list. They aren't videos, though, they're playlists, if you go to the playlists tab they show up. They are some of my older videos, though, so the production quality is a bit different.
I agree that all too often top 10 lists of this variety are cluttered up by flashy visuals and needless speculation and the like. As I see it, top 10 lists should be concise and to the point. I aim to cut out all the fat in my reviews and analyses, while still making them entertaining and informative.

I think we have one fave in common ( a game a pool) and honestly one of your worst- midnight sun - is one of my faves : MIDNIGHT SUN SPOILER AHEAD: yeah - the "science" in the midnight sun bothered me a bit - but the whole "earth is moving towards the sun" part of the episode was all a dream anyway so the science can be wonky, right? - my favorite TZ ep is without a doubt 5 characters in search of an exit which is actually the ULTIMATE TZ episode - the twist is really entirely unpredictable, but makes perfect sense if you accept the suspension of disbelief which is fantasy but logical within the fantasy - what are your thoughts on that ep ? - it wasn't on either list . . 😀
In Midnight Sun, the Earth moving toward the Sun is a dream, but the Earth moving away from the Sun part isn't a dream, and it's equally implausible. In that regard I think Midnight Sun can be considered a precursor of sorts to Boy Who Predicted Earthquakes in that neither understands how stars work
I like your suggestion for doing something for The Outer Limits. I hope you can do something similar for Kolchak: The Night Stalker also.
Wow, making a top 10 list or even a top 5 list for Kolchak would be difficult considering there are only 20 episodes. Still a great show regardless. I find it crazy how many X-Files fans don't know about Kolchak
@@NicolasSequeira You're right. It's probably better to grade each episode on its own merits, which I'll attempt now:
1) The Ripper: C - the series cannibalized itself out of the gate with the same story as the first movie, only Jack the Ripper is the serial killer instead of the 75-year old Janos Skorzeny.
2) The Zombie: A - organized crime meets the voodoo occult.
3) They Have Been, They Are, They Will Be: F - just a lame UFO story.
4) The Vampire: A - a brilliant sequel to the original Vegas story.
5) The Werewolf: A - a werewolf on a cruise ship under a full moon. Excellent.
6) Firefall: A - a creepy episode that has gotten better with age.
7) The Devil's Platform: A - A creepy, prescient episode; maybe presaged Mr. Trump's run to the White House.
8) Bad Medicine: B+ - much better legend with an Indian antagonist.
9) The Spanish Moss Murders: A- for me, the best confrontation scene of the entire series.
10) The Energy Eater: F - just bad
11) Horror in the Heights: A - best episode overall.
12) Mr. R.I.N.G.: F - the only good point is that it showed that you can't trust the government.
13) Primal Scream: F - even for a horror series, the premise here was just lame.
14) The Trevi Collection: A - nice combo of high fashion meeting witchcraft/
15) Chopper: A- Brando's "Wild One" meets "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."
16) Demon in Lace: A - nice take on the Succubus legend.
17) Legacy of Terror: B - nice murder mystery on its own without the supernatural twist.
18) The Knightly Murders: B - all knights in armor ain't chivalrous after all.
19) The Youth Killer: C - good story ruined by a bad confrontation scene at the end.
20) The Sentry: F - the end of the road...and it showed.

Thanks for your reviews. I disagree with some of the reviews, but unlike others on these message boards, I view these as a matter of taste. People are always wonderfully different. I like hearing reviews where I disagree. Re "The Boy Who Predicted Earthquakes", I think you misunderstood something about the episode. The character does not cause the events to happen. He becomes aware of what is coming by learning about the situation. He can't predict a kidnap victim will be found unless he knows about the kidnapping, and he learns about the nova after he reads about the sun. To be fair, it's not a supernova that is predicted, but a nova. Your point is still valid since the sun will not go nova either. One thing I've learned is that those who do try to write or create science fiction frequently don't know anything about science, so some things I can overlook and other things I can't. I can overlook how annoying the kid is at times. I like the episode for the drama--imagine the sudden realization that the Earth will end tomorrow. You mentioned that you never saw "Brenda". I like this episode a lot, but the very last scene is what makes the episode, so stay with it until the end. There are some people who hate the episode. "Silent Snow, Secret Snow" is excellent. I saw these when I was a kid, so episodes with troubled kids resonated with me more than most people, since I was a troubled kid. Anyway, thanks for doing these, and a big thumbs up from me.

You mentioned two episodes being a ripoff of the Twilight Zone but you never mentioned The Lone Survivor. It seemed like it was pale imitation to Judgement Night. Also, I have to disagree with you on The House being a good haunted house episode. In fact, I'm going to It say it was completely ridiculous. The ending was predictable at best and the main character was sort of stupid. Who the hell would be happy they just bought a haunted house?
Yeh, now that I think of it Lone Survivor is kind of a ripoff. You make a good point there. Another point that could be made for it is that after the ship he gets picked up by is revealed to be the Lusitania, it becomes obvious that he's telling the truth and we don't need to see him get picked up by the Andrea Doria. 'S very repetitive. Judgment Night is clearly the better story, it has a lot more atmosphere and a much cooler idea behind it.
As For The House, the point of the episode is to switch things up as far as the idea of a house being "haunted" goes. The basic premise is that Joanna Pettet telepathically projects herself onto the car and goes to knock on the door, and then her real self wakes up and goes to check, but her subconscious version has already driven away. It's a real mind-twister but that's what makes the episode so great, and upon repeat viewings you'll probably get it. It's Night Gallery at its finest, trying new things and messing with traditional story structure. I don't think the ending is predictable, Sir, in fact I'd argue it's one of the most unexpected twists Night Gallery ever offered. Joanna Pettet is a good actress and she certainly delivers. As for why she's happy to buy the haunted house, she knows on a subconscious level that it's just her haunting the house, so she doesn't need to worry. Like I said, it takes a little thinking, but the episode is solid screenwriting from front to back, and much better than a cookie-cutter haunted house episode like Fright Night or Something In The Woodwork. To the best of my knowledge the concept of a homeowner haunting the house themselves through astral projection hasn't been tried before or since, and that's what separates Night Gallery from its predecessor, it was willing to be experimental and take risks. Sometimes that pans out really well, and sometimes it doesn't, but when it does it's a very memorable viewing experience.

"Lindemann's Catch" works on young kids and was terrifying. Don't ask me how I know.
"The Caterpillar" works in the E.C. comic sort of way. Again, probably works better on a younger audience.
I wouldn't say E.C. Comics are inherently immature- given their prominence as the greatest horror comics ever made, I doubt they would stoop to the level of just having a bug go into a guy's ear. That's about as boring and lame as it's possible for horror to get when you consider all the fantastic ideas E.C. explored during its run. You might as well write a whole novel about a mosquito bite if your standards are that low
If you haven’t watched Brenda, DON’T, Little Lost Girl, just awful, Green Fingers just gets too wired at the end for me, but her when you do a top anything not everyone will agree. That’s why in doing a top anything I always say in my opinion.

Now about Brenda, it’s about a girl who has a terrible attitude on an island and no other kids like her, so she’s lonely, she find a strange looking grassy creature that chases her, she traps it in a large ditch, talks to it, (it doesn’t talk back), she comes back to help it get out and runs from it, only to let it in her house where the parents run it off with fire, they leave the island for a year and she comes back to find it in that same ditch, but it’s only a pile of rocks, she hugs the rocks and she says she loves him, so she is a lonely little girl with I guess an imaginary friend, it’s just goofy 🙃

The kid reading about super novas doesn't start a super nova. He can't predict anything he doesn't consciously know about. So, reading about super novas allows him to PREDICT the nova. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to predict it.
Whether or not the sun would have gone supernova if he had read about it is insignificant. What is significant is that the sun does not contain enough matter to go supernova.

My point was that the sun could only go nova due to supernatural elements such as psychic powers, and could not go supernova otherwise, and as such if the sun would have gone nova anyway, irrespective of Clint Howard's abilities, then the events of the episode are wholly inconsequential. None of that matters anyway, considering that the episode is relatively ambiguous as to whether or not he causes the sun to go supernova and nobody can gauge the poorly defined logic of the episode with 100% certainty one way or the other, as you've attempted to do.

If you watch the show carefully, he states that if he hadn't read about novas in his astronomy book, he'd only know something big was going to happen. He also says that if he hadn't known that girl was missing, he couldn't have predicted she would be found. Now stop being stubborn and admit you misinterpreted the episode.
@@DetectiveKemper What you're admitting, then, is that whether or not he knew about the supernova, the sun would have gone supernova, which is both scientifically inaccurate and means that the actions taken by the characters in the episode were entirely meaningless and had no stakes or purpose. It is a poorly written episode, whether or not Howard's powers cause the sun to explode. In fact, if they do not cause the sun to explode, it is arguably even worse.
I disagree with so much of what you have to say about Night Gallery that I quit listening. Night Gallery was broadcast on television before you were born. You don't understand the audience that watched the episodes. I don't think you should be negatively criticizing any work of film art. You should stop talking after saying you liked an episode or did not like an episode. When you make a film work as good as what you think is the worst of Night Gallery episodes then you will have room to criticize. When the resources that were available for making the Night Gallery are considered there are no bad episodes. Can't wait to see your production. I feel a little bad about my toned but you have insulted something I watched when it aired.
I watched Night Gallery on VHS when I was only a toddler. I have nothing but respect for the series, it's one of my favorite series and one of the first series I ever watched. it's shaped my views on the incredible potential of horror. I have nothing against Night Gallery.

@@juanramirez-wk8ty It's not fantasy. Night Gallery is horror, and The Caterpillar in particular is non-supernatural horror where the earwig is not given any magical powers. It's stated in the script that the earwig is a naturally occurring animal, and as such I expect it to follow standard biological laws. I can't be scared by a story that makes no sense and breaks its own set parameters. John Carpenter's "The Thing" Is a much better example of body horror done correctly, where everything about the monster makes sense within the established rules of its own universe
