There's no one else on this planet who could play this part like he did
@cocacolagrl100 there's 1000's of drill sergeants, and not 1 of them even comes close to R Lee Ermy
No, He wasn't a drill sergeant. The Army has those. Marines have Drill Instructors. @@cocacolagrl100
He adlib almost all the lines to the toughest director in the business changing that part of the picture to match the real Kore during Veit num and knowing people who did serve during that time they said he was spot on.
That hard ass never played anything... He was born mean AF
He wasnt playing LOL
R. Lee Ermey stole this entire movie.
i think my favourite story is that he'd only been hired as a technical consultant, and got cast after he did a demo of what the actor should do in the bootcamp scenes with a healthy dose of improvisation. He also did a heckof a lot supporting troops throughouthis post military career which, regardless of your opinions of the military, is an inspiring level of loyalty.
1000% True . The greatest quotes in movie history. I think he wrote most of them due to his experience as an actual drill sergeant
R LEE ERMEY IS THIS MOVIE
Becasue he did what he has done in the Marines. He made Marines on camera.
You know, the first half was great, but the second half was only so-so.
Still one of the greatest performances ever
R. Lee Ermey should have won an Oscar for playing Sgt. Hartman

The real deal
Well he was acting because he was playing the example of what he thought was a BAD drill SGT training marines the wrong way
@@THEHELLHOUND456 Um, no. All the DI's were like that, and they were doing it the right way. Tf are you even saying?
Yes, he was a real Marine Corps drill instructor who was “hired” as a military advisor to help with the actors who would play the roles of the drill instructors. He impressed the director so much, they said we already have drill instructor Hartman right here in front of us !! Great story and all true.
What always cracks me up is the absolutely unequivocal, deadpan, extremely blunt delivery of such outrageous statements.

Yeah. The guy who was supposed to play him, ended up playing the door gunner talking about the VC when dumping onto the civilians.
I can't remember if he was salty about it, but it was the best decision made for this movie.

@@ilovebadkitties dude, Full Metal Jacket is the penultimate Vietnam movie ever made. R. Lee Erme was an actual Marine Corps Drill Instructor . In 1972 I attended Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola , Florida . The top 5 % of Marine Corps Drill Instructors were the Drill Instructors who were charged with training the Naval Aviation Officer Candidates . Why in Gods name would they put potential naval aviators through that ooo-rah nonsense? Wouldn't they mostly want guys with good numbers memory, procedures memory, and accurate hand flying skills?
@@RaptorFromWeegeein the days of Vietnam especially, but just as relevant today, the aviators that fly over hostile territory often end up with a free parachute ride to said country. Hand flying skills only get you so far 🙏
@@RaptorFromWeegee All the memory and dexterity in the world is irrelevant if you're a coward or a quitter.
@@tanksoldier No coward or a quitter would ever seek out combat jet training in the first place. Learning to fly takes great persistence and work. Riding around in combat jets is an exercise in discomfort and sometimes misery.
Just climbing into one of those things for a ride along is quite dangerous, as they're made for performance, not safety.
As far as ground combat skills, theres not much a downed pilot can do with the side arm they give them. Their best bet for survival is to surrender ASAP.
Men who flew in combat in Southern Asia have told me that the real reason they got that side arm is for self cancelation if capture by the Taliban was ever imminent.
