Who is Fatima? Is she the daughter of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam?

Thank you for your inquiry. The village of Fatima, Portugal (where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three children in 1917 with an urgent message for all mankind) does indeed have a Muslim namesake, indirectly linked back to the daughter of Mohammed.
In the time of the Moorish occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, the Muslim sheikh or sultan who ruled Alcacer do Sal - the region where (centuries later) the apparitions of Our Lady would take place - had a daughter whom he named Fatima, after Mohammed’s daughter. When the Crusaders drove the Moors out of the region, the young princess Fatima chose to remain among her Christian captors, having fallen in love with one of the Crusaders, Don Goncalo Hermingues. She converted to the Catholic Faith, was baptized under the name Oureana (from which the village of Ourem took its name), and married Hermingues in the year 1158, but she died soon afterward. The heartbroken widower Don Goncalo left his position as Count of Ourem to become a Cistercian monk in the abbey of Alcobaca, about twenty miles distant. A short time later, the abbey founded a small priory in the mountains neighboring the region where Don Goncalo and Fatima had lived, to which Brother Goncalo was now sent. Goncalo had his dear bride's remains also translated to this priory. The region thus began to be called by her name, and it has retained the name of Fatima to this present day. God bless you.
