Beowulf, Overview and background

The great Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf is a curious text. The author's identity is unknown but he seems to have been a Christian writing about heroic figures in the pagan past. It is subtle in its portrait of good and evil that seems to have been unknown in the later Middle Ages.
In this preliminary lecture, I look at the main themes and feature of the epic.
