The Gion Hanamachi Art Museum
(Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture), a facility where you can experience the profound world of geisha and maiko, will open on Wednesday, May 15th, 2024.
The Gion geisha are said to have originated when women who entertained guests at teahouses in the Higashiyama area, which has been known as a famous spot for cherry blossom and moon viewing since ancient times, began to entertain guests with music, dance, and more in addition to alcohol and food in the Edo period. In 1872 (Meiji 5), the large-scale dance performance "Miyako Odori" featuring all geisha and maiko was founded, and the Gion Kaburenjo was built in 1913 (Taisho 2) as a venue exclusively for this performance, and now the Gion Hanamachi Art Museum has been established. In addition to the permanent exhibition that conveys the culture of the Hanamachi in an easy-to-understand way, the museum also offers the opportunity to take commemorative photos with geisha and maiko and watch them perform.
