Thank you for posting these! I am jumping in knowing nothing other than I want to try a tiny drum spinner, and your videos are some of the most helpful starting resources that I have found. Now I have some parts on the way and am looking forward to seeing where this goes. Hopefully I will see you in the ring soon! :)
Thankyou for helping begginers understand what is needed to begin to become a battle bot player!
I love all the interesting details you shared here. Looks like a really fun project.
Ben Brandt It is! I should be starting another one soon, but I need a bit more time. There's a competition in early October that I'm going to try and attend.
+Robert Cowan (Rowen Hobbies) Wait are you coming to MASSdestruction next weekend? That's a bit of a trek from Colorado.
+Adrian Kelly No. There WAS going to be a competition at NoCo Maker Faire on the 10th, but it was cancelled. I'll just wait until RoboGames next year probably.
Great stuff Robert. Just found your channel and am loving it. I should be doing my taxes right now but can't stop watching your videos.
Ha! Taxes are boring. Watch more videos ;-)
excellent work,amazing bot
Thanks for plugging your channel on your last SFE video :)
+Andy Plater Of course!
Thanks for the information 🤗
very cool Robert. when you have the 3d printer ready you can use it for these cars :)
I'm about to start building my first combat robot with my son--we found this tremendously helpful (if a bit daunting, given our lack of access to the amazing tools you have!)
Thanks.
Seems a little duanting at first but my team and I were able to do it with a dremel, drill, heat gun, soldering iron and basic hand tools.
Very cool. Do you have any pics or video?
Who?
You?
Wow, I bought some Garolite G10 plates, and that stuff is STRONG.
Can u send me a link where I can buy all the electronics please this would be my first robot and I loved the way u explained everything in all of ur videos for this series!
Robert, Is USA antweight 1lb or 150grams? I'm hearing reading conflicting information.
A US antweight is 1lb, period. Anyone that says otherwise is lying to you ;-)
thanks
excelentes vídeos pero ¿donde puedo conseguir los bloques de polietileno?
How big was the UHMW-PE or what specific size? plz help?
i really always want to build a combat bot but i wouldn't have a good budget and don't know a good website or a local hardware store to get some bot parts and weapons
And the motor "mounts" and armour plates
you were using microgear 460 rpm motor for powering your antweight robot. Then what motor do you prefer for a 120 pound robot?
what program did you use to make the design
Those Li-po 's back there are huge... o.o
i don't think they are for the robot XD
Great and informative video series. Any chance you might be willing to share some of those Solidworks files so I can machine a chassis like yours? Thanks!
Sure, send me a private message with your email.
Do you think yoy could send me the drawing and dimensions for thus robot as well?
is there anyway I can get the cut out of the body? since I don't have the tool u had? pls
Sorry, the chassis is not for sale.
Out of curiosity: why did you use the 9X with the OrangeRx receiver and the compatibility module, rather than just using a 9X receiver (or OrangeRx transmitter, I guess)? The HobbyKing page is also full of people complaining that there are major issues with the 9X and that module with binding. Did you have any problems?
+Thomas Chappelear - I haven't had any problems. I used that because of the tiny transmitter available for the orangeRX. there really isn't a small version for the turnigy.
When did you first start doing combat robotics?
can the 1lb combat combat robot be any side or does it has to be in the 4" square? for example can I be 6" × 6" × 2"
it depends on the competition. some have size restrictions, others do not. Generally, there aren't any size restrictions, just weight. It can be any size you want really, as long as it's under 1lb.
all right thank you!👍
love your videos. was wondering if you can use fan motors for wheel motors? i don't have any money to build something but i got a lot of junk to maybe use from
I'm not sure what you mean by fan motors. Any motor will technically work, you just need to make sure it spins slow enough. Most motors (without a gearhead) spin way too fast (10k - 30k RPM). You will need something with a gearhead. You can certainly use stuff you find in your junk drawer, but you might not be very competitive and it's not fun to lose in 30 seconds and then be out of the competition. Check ebay or amazon for cheap gear motors, you can usually find knock-offs of the ones I use for $5 or so. This would be a better solution because they would be in the right speed range and make the robot actually work ;-) that being said, if you have motors with a gearhead, they should be fine. If they don't have some sort of way to reduce the speed, they just won't work the way you want. They need significant reduction in speed.
by fan motors i mean the motors that spin the blades on a plug in box fan. cause i got plenty of broken fans laying around.
Ah, those are AC, so they won't work. You need a DC motor instead.
ok thanks. yea since i haven't been able to get a job after i graduated high school 7 years ago for what ever reason. i haven't the money to buy adequate equipment. i just try to build stuff with the junk my pops and i have laying around the yard. thanks again for the valuable input.
DON'T get into robotics, especially combat robotics without a steady income. It's VERY expensive, even with found parts. I'm being serious. You will still need to buy batteries, a receiver, etc. It can all get broken in a matter of seconds. It's an expensive hobby.
Manching Plastics i work in the Industries and i learnd the bad way
but Whitt time i have got exspera Whitt Plastics
scheep tools like HSS-steel
or the expensiv tools like polykristallin diamond bits
work the best .
When you bought the switch, did it come with the connectors or you welded it after?
It comes with the tabs, you need to solder or connect your own wires.
how much would i cost to build your robot
U should ask michanical ninjineer to enter his UA-camr battle bot compatition.
can you send me the desing ?? or the chassis dimensions?? please
What are the dimensions lxbxh ?
Hi, can you help me sending me your design? I've been struggling with solid works lately and this design is really well done.
Very cool. What mill are you using?
+Mark Moran It's a converted PM-30MVL. It's similar to the Grizzly G0704, but a couple sizes bigger. I'm working on a video series explaining CNC, the various types of machines available, and the pros and cons of each.
I'd like to get into the hobby and I was wondering, where do I find the rules and regulations? And what are the dimensional limits?
Good question, find the competition you want to attend first and look up the rules. A good place to look for rules is sparc.tools. The rules are pretty standardized.
Thank you
Could you please tell me what tool you used to shape the plastic block?
I used a CNC milling machine.
Also can u send me a video of how Sargent cuddles runs please
sorry But i havent a thing like that in The video to do The chassis of robot so were Can i Buy one ? thanks
+Luca Aloisi You can't buy them, but you can get creative and make your own. You can just sheet metal and bend it, or just use a dremel.
Where did you buy your parts from?
Where can i get that finished case? I dont have the tools to carve it.
This is custom made, you would need to make your own, I do not sell them. You can try 3d printing your own though.
Sorry I forgot, and the Drum
are you going to make a heavyweight robot?
Is there any way that you could send me the design? I know this version of Sgt Cuddles is retired now, but I am making something quite similar to it(larger, of course) and would like something to build off of... Thanks!
Here is a link to the files: drive.google.com/file/d/0B3wuc429rIOdelBRY3hDcU9PZ3c/view?usp=sharing
what are the screws that u use to mount the top and bottom plate.. do u have the dimension of the head for them?
They are just basic 4-40 machine screws, nothing special. I just under-drilled the holes for them, so they thread in pretty tightly.
and for the diameter of the head?
It's a button-head socket screw, 4-40, they have a standard head diameter, check google.
what is the size of the frame and did you make the wheels or buy them and where did get them from
+Kyle Stokes The chassis is roughly 111mm wide, 122mm deep, and 25mm tall. The wheels are made by Pololu, I got them from SparkFun: www.sparkfun.com/products/8901
+Robert Cowan (Rowen Hobbies) thanks
I really like the Chassis but don't have the materials and tools for it, is there a way i could buy one?
+BrainPain Sorry, but I don't plan on offering kits. Also, between the materials and time to make them, it would be pretty cost-prohibitive to sell.
ok, thanks
Robert,
Ive modeled a bot close to yours using the parts you provided and guessing the dinensions. I printed it out on my printer. Would it be ok with you if i used it in competitions.
Of course! I'm not into patenting or copyrighting designs...
Thanks!
+Stuff With Kirby honestly that's really cool. most builders are little jerks
+Alex Forman about their design
How did you get the Solid Works files for the motors?
I think I found them on 3dcontentcentral.com. either that or I just googled for them. I can't remember! If you need them, send me an email and I could send you the files I have.
Great! Thanks! I will see what I can find!
can you help me, senting me your desing please?? ; it is a great job
Sure, send me an email and I can send the files. You can find my email in the "about" section of my channel.
but its 4.5 right? it has to be 4 or less
not that I'm aware. The competition(s) I've gone to don't have size requirements, it's just weight. If you visit sparc.tools, they have the rules for the competitions I've been in.
+Robert Cowan (Rowen Hobbies) oh ok
robert can you releas the stl for sgt.cuddles
Send me an email, you can find my email address in the about section of my channel.
Hey I've been watching your videos and am very interested in your build if it was to much to ask but is there anyway for you to build one and give me a price range for it?
Thanks! Most of the fun is building your own design. I just sold Sgt. Cuddles and it went for $600. That would be the rough price range.
Robert Cowan thank you for a replie and I'm not very good with electronics so I can't bull them if there is anyway I could get one or buy one let me know if you could and the price range is a little rough
Robert Cowan also would you mind selling a robot?
Hey man, I’m seriously interested in that chassis. Do you mind emailing me with the design for it? I also have a few questions regarding construction if you wouldn’t mind to help out a rookie
Send me an email, you can find my email address in the "about' section of my channel.
what did you use to make the design sir
The design was done in Solidworks.
It's got fackin googly eyes on it.
What is the height of the chassis
It's about an inch.
can someon tell me the material or send me a link?
Check your email, I just sent you a link to the material and the name.
what is the thickness of the wall of your chassis?
It varies drastically, depending on where you measure.
ok but the smallest is what approximately? do u think 5mm is enough if i wanna build one
using uhmpw?
I think the thinnest is around 5mm or so. 5mm in UHMW is still pretty strong.
which software used to design it
Solidworks.
Hi bro, can you tell me the program name please?
It's Solidworks.
is there a program like SolidWorks that's free
Also if you could send a link to where u got your chassis material or to other materials that would work instead. It would be very helpful thanks.
Hi, Is solidworks free and easy to use?
M.P Gaming No and No
TML ProductionsTM Lol
What was the chassis made of?
+Thecalmcreeper 24 UHMW-PE - ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene.
@@RobertCowanDIY ok thank you
Also do you have the design of the chassis you could send me?
+BrainPain send me a message on UA-cam with your email and I can send it.
+Robert Cowan (Rowen Hobbies) thanks, i just sent you one
+Robert Cowan (Rowen Hobbies) I'm french and i am very interesting by your invention.I would like to know if it's possible that you send me the design of you chassis because i would like to build one.
500 rpm? everything I see online says 12000-14000 rpm.
Where did I say 500 RPM? what context?
@@RobertCowanDIY for the spindle speed
ua-cam.com/video/86EJ05kBksA/v-deo.html
@@SomethingFishy707 It depends on the machine really. You can certainly cut with a much higher RPM, but you have to increase the feedrate to compensate. On that mill, the max cutting speed is around 100 IPM, which is too slow for that fast of an RPM. But generally, plastics need a lower RPM and higher feedrate.
@@RobertCowanDIY oh ok thank you
can you sendme the desing ?? please...
Send me an email. You can find it in the 'about' section of my channel.
i sent you an email.
can you send me the desing ? I want to make this one by using 3D printer, but I dont know how to design. khangphantruong@gmail.com. thank you. sr for my bad English
Do you have the desing? You can send me? Please...
i mean how much would it cost to build your robot
+Vlogger Herd - total parts cost would maybe be $200 or so, no including tools.
thanks
because i really really love your robot
Where can I get that block?
Block of what?
The uhmw chassis please 😓
@@rev.nicholasboamah6588 Check mcmaster, eBay or your favorite plastics supplier.
Excellent design, you can share it to me please...???
Check your email!
Thank you very much you have saved my friend
200th like!
how big is sgt cuddles?
It's roughly 4.5" W x 5" D x 1" H.
+Robert Cowan (Rowen Hobbies) so he isny exactly a antweight robot?
It IS exactly an antweight :-) Antweight class robots are 1lb or less, which it is.
what site did you use for your uhmw
I get my UHMW from McMaster Carr or Amazon.
whats your opinion of recycled uhmw vs virgin uhmw because am making a beetleweight dual disc spinner similar to hypershock with 1piece chassis and can order the uhmw recycled in custom Cut blocks for about 50Cad and have minimal waste or buy a small sheet of uhmw get 1 or 2 chassis and have quite a bit of waste
how thick is srgt cuddles chassis?
EXTRA THICC!!!!
Robert Cowan the reason I'm asking is because as I've been told it's not too good of an idea to machine 2" thick uhmw and i was wondering how thick urs was
it is pronounced shasy
Obviously this isn't a hobby for beginners to get into. I don't have any of the machines you've shown.
It can be. You don't need the tools and machines I use. Also, outsourcing machining is VERY inexpensive these days.
can i get your email ?
You can find my email in the 'about' section of my channel.
