Thank you. This is a proper video to show how much water it thinks is enough. Some might say that’s a waste but that water is music to my ears. I would rather a high water bill and clean clothes. 👍🏽
Thank you so much for this amazingly detailed step-be-step! I just got one of these and thought the bloody thing was broken on the first day!
😂
We've never had an HE washer before and thought ours was broken during the sensing phase because of the sound it made. We thought it was stuck/broken and spent a good 2 hours looking for answers and restarting it. Only to find this video.. Thank you
@xlxrootxlx mine does
Doesn't it sound like a PIG.
R• 1 year ago: There are just many washers that naturally make pronounced sounds inherited in the design. At least you know it's working.
I'm sure glad there's still agitator washers that can fill up to the top.
I don't like mine at all but Lowes wouldn't exchange it. This is my Worse purchase so far.
Thank you. The way this one "chugs" compared to my old one's continuous sound made me think it was broken.
Me too, it sounds CRAZY! I'm so relieved. And this info was not easy to find! TY Kirk Rivas
Same. This video makes me feel so much better.
I just ordered this exact washer from Lowes on sale for $429.99 and I am glad that it will give a full tub of water. After using another HE top load washer that I purchased in 2007 that barely covered the clothes and always left some sort of residue. I'm glad I watched your video! TFS
When you put yours on deep water wash, does it fill to the top?
Anita Baker Not sure, because the top locks while its goes through the cycles and doesn’t unlock until it finishes. I can tell you that my clothes do come out very clean every time!
I have this very same machine. I just purchased it back in November. So far no issues. Seems to do the job well. I only wish it filled while the lid is open. Plus this one seems to take longer than my previous washer 🤷🏿♂️
@@annacarter3859 thanks for the reply. One last question, does it wash comforters well?
@@sharris3624 Yes, it does!
Really nice washer. My Amana washes like this Whirlpool washer. Only thing different is i push a button to start the washer.
This is the washer I have now and I really Love it it gets the clothes clean and it was my Christmas present last year and a very special one too
Hi Tracy Farmer !!!
May I please know, do you still have this washer and do you still like it ?
I agree....my older washer would have been washing by now and filled up....these new washers have really went down in function and quality and now its best to stick with older models that were built better and built to last!.
Agreed 100%
I hate mine!
Totally agree! If I would have known that I wouldn’t have wasted my money!
I got my Whirlpool washer today, just like this one. I am surprised at how little water it used for a medium load. Didn’t really get far up the agitator. However, it was just enough and the clothes came out nice and clean. In fact, cleaner than my moms front load Samsung cleans them. And the cycle ran around 30-40 minutes. For most light duty stuff auto sensing will work fine but if the clothes are very dirty (like my work uniforms) it’s probably better to use the deep fill. Haven’t had the chance to try it yet but I will soon.
19:31 Thank you for zooming out. Answers the question i had about the space between the drum and the outside.
Ty whirlpool for bringing the aggitator back!
This thing doesn't clean anywhere near as good as a front loader. Those agitate your clothes both better and gentler AND use less than half the water. This is old school tech that needs to die. I looked up this washer because it came with my house, and I hate it. This is not how auto water sensing is supposed to work!
@@victreebel170 Funny how the longest lasting, best washer is a top load agitator aka Speed Queen and outlasts and cleans better than any front loader. The new models with all the bells and whistles are so convuluted, they they are sure to break down within 5 years for the vast majority of those models.
@@ragingphoinix9144 They may last longer, but what makes you say they clean better? Every review outlet I've seen that actually tests stain removal in the SpeedQueen TC5 shows that it's *Severely* lacking in cleaning performance... I mean, it makes sense, SQ's are designed to be marketed to people who are not using the machine for their own laundry and only care about longevity and time between service. An apartment building manager could give two sh*ts whether the machine cleans well, it just needs to accept quarters, let a lot of water flow in, make a lot of noise for 30 minutes, and then spin (slowly). That's it.
We just bought the dryer that matches this unit. Didn't think to research the washer. When my 25 year old Whirlpool finally gets too costly to repair will probably look for something else. Would like to see the typical scenario of throwing one day's worth of work uniform, socks and undies. This is normally a extra small setting. This washer looks like it would be fine for people that always have full loads. If I had one of these available I would run it against my 25 year old machine and compare the total gallons used on the home's water meter. I would also measure how much energy is actually used. Would be an interesting comparison between a old machine that could be set to extra low vs auto sense. This auto sense appears to be pretty lame. I may just keep buying old cheap machines at auctions. My 10 year old whirlpool dryer got too costly to fix, paint wore off and is rusting. Oddly enough the 25 year old washer is still perfectly fine. They don't make them the same even though sometimes they try to make them look the same.
GarretsDaddio the new whirlpool washers are junk . Keep your old one running
Amen. My dad works in a recycling facility and they let him bring home an old washing machine. Because it was old he wanted to use it for his work clothes and just really dirty clothes (not to ruin our nicer washing machine). Turns out it runs 100% better than our new one and now my mom runs most of the clothes through the older one. I just moved out and am looking to get an older washer and dryer but they are sooo hard to come by. And even when they do, I am so ignorant as to how to tell whether I am getting a lemon or not.....
Just got this washer from Lowes I hope it last a long time .
I though the door locks while its running ?
I love this washer. I currently have a 3.2 cf Whirlpool, which has issues involving the tub bearing. I have made personal repairs myself replacing the agitator dogs and the water pump but the replacing of the tub bearing is more than I want to do. My washer is almost 15 years old and I will replace soon. Thank you so much for the demonstration.
Don't buy a new one, they suck!
@@JoyR528 I purchased a Maytag 7230 set and I am extremely happy with their performance. My clothing is so much cleaner. The washer's spin cycle removes the water beautifully and the clothes do not take long to dry.
Lowe's currently has this model on sale for $329. Came here to see how it works. Seems all these new auto sensing machines have the same issue: not enough or too much water. Honestly, I never wash less than a large load as I HATE doing laundry and want to get it over with. I think too much water is better than not enough. May go for this one.
This is one of my favorite models in this price category. Not a bad choice, keep the channel posted on how you like the machine. Thanks for your comment.
This one is being discontinued.
Thanks, No wonder the price is so low lol.
@@kirkrivas8172 If that is so, why is it still being sold today?
Somebody may have a stock pile of these units. As a dealer in Texas, Whirlpool is telling me that this model is discontinued. It's on my website but it shouldn't be, I guess there are some models still floating around in Whirlpool's warehouses.
I've had mine since may and love it. I think it's my detergent that doesn't get the clothes clean sometimes though. Those pods compared to regular tide make a difference in how clean your clothes get. Just have to make sure you keep your machine sensors clean.
Great to hear the good news with your Whirlpool. Super cool car by the way. When I get the funds, I would rather buy a car from the late 60"s to early 70's than something new. I don't know , I'm just dreaming.
Commercial laundry detergents contain chemicals that are so bad for your clothes and even worse for your health. Making your own detergent is so easy. Give it a try. I don't understand why others are complaining about the water level. Everyone I know who owns a so called efficient machine complains about the machine not having enough water to get the clothes clean and they have to run every load on the bulky items setting to get enough water to clean the clothes. My machine has somehow gotten off cycle where it starts agitating right away instead of waiting for it to fill. Back to searching videos to see if I can figure out how to reset it.
I'm not 100% sure but do the sheets cycle or bulky cycle and or with deep fill option selected. Post a link on the soap making stuff. Thanks for posting!
I teach classes how to do it but I haven't made any videos. There are tons of recipes out there so you have your choice of liquid or dry. In this case, Pintrest is your friend. I use essential oils in mine so my clothes smell fresh without all the harsh chemicals. The commercial of they guy smelling his wife's scarf or shirt or whatever it is and saying she washed it months ago is scary.
Watching these videos makes me want to take a 2x4 to the engineering team that designs these HE washers
TOTALLY AGREE
What happened to washing machines actually using water nowadays 😔
@@jessedean2435Frr I just got a washer today and it had an agitator and I thought that it would wash like the one I had before and it washes just like this one but Worse and the worse part it was 700 dollars 😢
Actually you need to take that 2x4 to our environmentalists.
Thanks. It confirms my experiments during the past 3 months, since I bought it brand new. With 1 small hand towell it fills the whole reservoir (i.e. no difference, it doesn't work, it is always the same volume).
Thanks for your comment, I hear other people saying that too about the water level, you are not the only one. This type of washer needs plenty of water to clean though.
Could you run the machine on both full loads and very empty? Don't run any other water in the house at all and compare the water usage for each run with the home's water meter? I am just curious what the result would be.
This machine senses how much water to fill by weight. If I put less than 3 pounds in the machine then whatever I have in there is treated like a big, bulky 2 pound comforter. I did a small, 4 pound load in the washer this morning, and the machine did just fine with the amount of water added...not a full tub of water but enough water to wet the clothes thoroughly. I have a video on my channel with that small load running in the machine plus another video detailing the ins-and-outs of this machine.
Does this washer wash a queen comforter good or is it too big
This machine doesn't sense anything. WhirlPoop put the HE branding on it and claimed it had auto sensing so they could continue to sell a 40 year old design without having to change anything or innovate. It's starting to backfire now though, and Whirlpoop is shipping as many as they can to as many dealers as will accept them - especially big box stores which evidently had between 20 and 40 - yes, FOURTY of these turds, inexplicably start showing up late last year... rumor has it, this huge influx of shoddy washers is to help prevent Whirlpoop from having to make a "Running change" and actually include the sensors and logic that would allow them to auto-sense... just like federal law required and Whirlpoop originally claimed. Shameful company peddling the nastiest tin cans I swear.
If I get an High Efficiency washer now, then I would get this one.
Set it on “Auto-Sensing” with this amount of clothing inside the tub, it looks like it will still fill the tub with almost the same amount of water as the older belt-drive/direct-drives did before only now, it will just take a little longer to complete a cycle (which is something I miss with the older direct-drives. These new belt-drives take at over an hour-and-a-half to complete a cycle/load whereas an older direct-drive can complete a cycle/load in just an half-an-hour).
And when these break down, do I need to call in a repairman and fix my machine? With an older direct-drive, I can pretty much repair my own machine in an hour at least, and I can expect for my machine to last 15-20 years.
It’s the quick aspect is what I miss most out of the older direct-drive machines.
Maybe now, this video here can change my mind and convert me over.
-Charles-
You would be making a BIG MISTAKE getting rid of a washer with direct drive!!! As you stated you can work on it yourself " if" you need to! I just waited forever for a washer to fill when the salesman push for it to sense the amount of water for 5 to 6 shirts ( medium load) and it filled extra large! The tub looks like it has alot of movement, too much!!! I think it should have a see through lid, do not like lids that lock for safety reasons!!! I'm keeping my Whirlpool washer direct drive!!!

Maybe try it with just like 3 shirts to see if it makes a difference? While this does seem to have a bit more water than necessary, these agitators were not designed for HE use anyway. It's nice that they brought them back but they can be harsh on clothes in low water levels. It's really the bottom fins that cause the most problem. The HE agitators have more rounded fins.
I agree completely
A small, simple washer that gets clothing clean. I've found larger capacity washers can get torn up by large unbalanced loads.
i have a WTW4816FW2 whirlpool washer and i want to see one in full action just the same kind of washer
How did you open the lid before it's rinsing, washing, draining and spinning?
That is how l like my close to wash they are moving
That’s pretty cool Kirk
If you are seeing this much water for a small load of clothes, try running the "clean washer" cycle with an empty drum. The sensor should recalibrate during this cycle.
Also, I do have the same washing machine. The first thing I did when I got the washer was run the "clean washer" cycle before doing laundry. I took a peek during the wash cycle, with my first load of laundry, and can confirm that the water level was about halfway up the tub on a "normal" cycle with a medium load. That said, the sensor appears to be doing its job. And FYI: the machine will fill deep, regardless of load size, on the "super wash" cycle.
Thanks Marie, very good information, this is one of the most popular machines I sell.
Kirk Rivas you're welcome
Thank you!!!
that seems like a lot of water for that size load .. it sensed that size load??
Just another variation of Whirlpool's vertical modular washer. They wash well, but do not last long term. Currently in the process of replacing my Roper branded version which has started shredding clothing - a common issue on these as they get a few years on them.
Thanks for the great informative video. I too just picked this washer up at Lowes. I want to deactivate the door lock, is it difficult to do so?
I'm sure glad Whirlpool put back the spray rinse before the start of the first spin.
How would I disable the door switch so when I open the door it still keeps filling? Thanks. Thinking of purchasing this unit.
Will like to know the answer to this question by Derek minor
shereen lalla no reliability for nubs but underneath where the door latches to the left is a lever smaller than your finger. Push towards you

Can you tell me how to override the lock on this specific washing machine lid so I can use it when the water is running? It’s extremely frustrating that it just locks automatically even while the water basin is initially filling up. Thank you!
Take the lid strike off the door and place it in the latch

How did you bypass the lock feature?
unbolt the two screw that hold the switch of the door and put the switch directly to the washer.

I just don’t know?? I really like the look of this washer it would look really nice in my laundry room. I just can’t decide whether to get rid of my 2003 model it’s still going strong. But shinny new toy? 🤩🤷🏻♀️
FYI got the 2003 second hand from mom when she purchased new ones. 2 sets later my washer dryer still going strong and hers gets repaired every 6 months.
@@ivonnebarrientos4685 I think you should go for it. It is a really nice washer! And like you said it will be really nice in my laundry room as well. I will be getting this washer.
Uses as much water as a direct drive (or more) depending on your load size

Kirk Rivas how your washer is doing it’s so cool
My washing machine I’m gonna get is a LG stackable front loader
I can't believe it works with the led open
How are you doing this demo with the lid actually open. Because I have one exactly like this but I must close it.
Man I’d love to know how to trick the sensor so I can do this every day!
The rinse cycle seemed like it was 8 minutes long. Maybe the timer is broken and has to be turned manually.
Rinse cycles: 35:53 46:30 I love rinse cycles
When and how do you put fabric softner in it?
can you make a video of a WTW4816FW2 Whirlpool washer (it's a request)
Can you do a quick wash cycle video with deep water wash please! I want to see how it washes on that cycle.
How reliable is this model? Has anyone experienced any issues with this washer? Thanks
nice pre turn over while it was filling before it started
Where’s all the water gping? It’s not filling up. Wow that took a long time to fill up
I bought one, had to return it. The sensor light came on at the beginning and flashed. I watched it and it flashed for 10 minutes before the washer turned off. It happened with both auto sense, and full tub setting. Oh well, there’s always lemons
Using this washer has been a frustrating experience!, when you set it for autosensing for a medium load the water level will be filled up almost to the top!! It's such a waste of water, soap, energy and time. And no, I'm not opening the lid during the sensing cycle, I check the water level when the washing starts and l can see all my clothes just swimming, they don't rub against each other so the wash is not effective. If someone knows how to trick it to get less water please let me know, thanks!
Why don't my led light 2 3 4 5 not lighting up...I just got this washer..I did everything according to the directions???
The problem I had was it didn't spin all the water out. Trudy Conley
I have the same exact machine and it doesn't do this. I hate it anyway because you can't open the lid while the water is running and it barely agitates and tje clothes dont smell clean. I'm glad I saved my old machine.
apisglider9 I guess you didn’t read the fucking instructions and the damn paper work!
The auto sensing took to long to determine how much water was needed for this load.. But overall the washing rollover action is good..
Actually what took a long time was the slow inlet valve.
How did you get pass the lid switch? I absolutely abhor that thing!
I like to add my clothes in after i fill the tub and evenly mix in the detergent. It wont let me.
An HE whirlpool washer that actually cleans clothes. Now i’ve seen everything.
Do you have a video on how to defeat lid lock.thank you
12:07 do the holes in the washer fill up and drain the wash basket?
How do you pre soak ?
Do you have one for the dryer
You use this on the maytag .the close dont go under the water .the orange thing stay on top the whole time
Does this clean clothes efficiently ?
I have the same washer, same noise too.
How Do You "Defeat" The Lid Switch???
This washer is good?
What's Rong when it doesn't shut off stays on have to unplug it after use ?
Is the tub supposed to fall about 6 inches when it’s washing ?
The tub is hanging on four suspension rods connected to the corners of the cabinet. A heavy load will pull the tub down, thus it is normal.

+Kirk Rivas Ok then. Hopefully you'll get more space then for some more Washer videos.

Does any cycle allow all hot water?
SecurityPro93 The only cycles that allow for true hot water are heavy duty, super wash, and bulky.
So mine washed now I can't get it to drain rinse or anything
The dry agitation of clothing is a turn of for me...I'd rather just have a load size selector. I see more stretched and ripped clothing in my future......might just stick to deep cycle wash
I recently bought this unit and I totally agree with you! A manual water selector is much better.
I hate all new washers with sensory water levels. I'm going to look at used appliances
Hey Kirk why is it filling so slowly
Probably with the full water in the washer
But the one I have it’s a Kenmore it’s a front loader and it’s side-by-side but all the sudden my dryer broke the fuse broke
What can i do to get my Whirlpool washing machine in that mood?
I have a Roper RTW4516FW2 washing machine that looks and sounds the same as this one
Mine won't fill up with that much water even with the "deep water wash" setting on. Local service guy says that's the way it's supposed to be for "conservation". This video says that's a lie. What is wrong with my machine?
Hmm totally disappointed in this, WAY too much water for this load. I've read that in reviews for these machines too, that they always fill too high on the auto sensing. Its too bad because I really like this machine.
I have A LOT of powder Sears Ultra Plus detergent, so I am glad there is a deep wash cycle.
Cooldude843
Cooldude84343 more water it better than a cup of water that most of these water sensing HE washers use. They use spray rinses that completely leave detergent residue behind it’s a shame what current day washers have become. Older washers use a spin spray rinse plus a deep fill.
Better to have a bit much water, than not enough to even wet the load!
Boooo
I just bought this unit and don't know how you by-passed the auto-lock? Personally, I hate the auto-lock mechanism and cannot figure out how you can have the water running while putting in my laundry detergent and then clothes? Right now, I have to put the laundry detergent in first, then the clothes and then close lid to start the washer. Afterwards, I have leftover soap in my detergent cap that I have to run to the bathroom to clean-out all because of this stupid auto-lock BS. Can you let me know what can be done (settings, rigging, etc.) to by-pass it? All these new units have that auto-lock mechanism and I absolutely hate it.
Large load so it makes sense that it filled up all the way but for small loads it doesn’t make sense. Or they did not put a water level sensor they just say that to advertise.
How to get it into deep water wash?
Im trying to learn how the soak function works? I don't have the manual I tried their website with no luck.
From the manual: Use this cycle to soak small spots of set in stains of fabrics. The washer will use intermittent agitation and soaking. after the time has expired, water will drain, but the washer "will not spin". Cycle is complete. if you wish To set a follow-up cycle, (open the lid then close first) , then select Drain & Spin. If you want the load spin dried (open and close the lid at the end of each cycle so it will clear and prepare for the next) then if desired add additional detergent , and select a cycle based on fabric type.
Hello can you give me some advice on the whirl pool model number WTW4955HW1? I recently moved in these apartments and the washer is literally new out the box. Although the Auto Sensing doesn't sense exactly. For example if I was to put a comforter in the washer it doesn't fill up all the way. Meaning only half of the comforter gets wet. I would actually have to get a pot or something to add extra water in the washer in order for the comforter to get entirely wet. Please help this is very annoying. Of course the washer is in the apartments name so I can't call a technician out.
Bought new. 4 months. Auto Sen zing has never worked. Get full load every wash. 4 face mask in to wash today. Full load water. I use more detergent and water with this machine. I despise the machine
Help! So I just got this washer installed today. It goes through the sensing cycle then it drains totally... then it goes to wash and does nothing... ideas?! Did I get a dud?
Hey Tarajo, I have this same machine, (purchased Nov. 2019) which cycle did you choose when it did that?
I have the exact same problem. I’ve spent all day trying to fix it and nothing.
Did you get figured out? I've wasted a while afternoon and can't get mine to fill.
Is the agitator just for show, I mean the whole time while washing I watched the yellow and white shirt, they never made the roll over to the bottom. Just looks like it swished them around. Wonder how well it cleans from people who own this.
The clothes were swimming due to too much water. Too much water for the load size, but the yellow shirt did do a couple of disappearing acts. It's a long sleeve shirt so it probably made a complete loop.
I guess I been watching way to many videos but it doesn't matter now for I decided to go with a Speed Queen set Nov, last month and love them.
Nice! Keep us posted on how it works for you. You don't have to watch this channel anymore, but recommend it to a friend :)
