This 11 year old video has a lot of useful information, very clearly explained! Thanks so much! I just replaced my 30 year old top loader. Even though my new machine is not the same brand and has some different features, this video answered so many questions about how this thing is operating. It even reassured me about sounds it makes.
This video is just what I was looking for. My husband and I just moved into an apartment with this type of washer. We were unsettled by many of the sounds it made as it washed our first load of clothes. We’re both totally blind so we couldn’t see the lights indicating which part of the cycle was going on. I love this video because it explains each stage of a cycle and each sound the unit makes. Thanks!
Thank You for this expertly explained detailed instruction of how to use a new HE Whirlpool Washer. This was the only Video that actually took me step by step and allowed me to visually see what the washer was doing inside because the lid had been removed. Perfect!!! I subscribed to your channel because of it. Thanks Again!!!
My Whirlpool is 48 years old and still going strong. It has had one minor repair that I did myself with a part from Amazon. I like the fact that the machine has a removable lint filter so my home's drain is less likely to be clogged with debris.
And here I am, on UA-cam, learning washing machine anatomy. 29 years old and using fabric softener for the very first time, had no idea that round thing in the middle was the dispenser. Thanks! (I guess)
I once bought a Whirlpool washer. During the third visit by the repairman in a span of 14 months, he told me that all these new HE washers were junk, and he gave me two options. He suggested I buy the extended warranty to help defer the cost of his future visits, or I could spend a little more and purchase a Speed Queen. I chose the Speed Queen and have not seen that man in years.
yeah just called appliance dealer and a speed queen costs $999 w/a 25 year warranty , I won't live another 25 years.... where as a GE 4,2 w/agitater costing $599 with delivery/hookup & removal of old washer, but has only a 1 year warranty, it's only me and I do 3 loads of laundry about every 2 weeks. My whirlpool duet front loader has last 10 yrs, but I think the bearings are going out. When Mom passed away, I wished I'd bought her old washer, we sold for $50 in an estate sale, it was still going strong after 20 years of use.
Does water come up from the bottom of the tub as well? If I put the liquid laundry detergent in first, then load my clothes, the detergent will just soak into the clothes at the bottom. How does the detergent get evenly distributed throughout the wash?
@Sharkie626 My 1986 Kenmore stopped draining and it would immediately start spinning instead of first draining then spinning. I still have it outside with a tarp over it just in case i needed it and i think im just going to bring that one back in and get it fixed unless its the motor or transmission.
I was wondering then at what stage do you put liquid deturget in if not over the clothes. If you put it at the start then add clothes it's going to make contact with the clothes anyway??? Also do you always have to add water to the fabric softener?

The water will then be slowly heated to the temperature selected, to aid in stain removal. Sincerely, Jennifer

One of the washers at my local laundromat is a Whirlpool, the agitator is black and straight with three fins, it senses the load like an HE machine would, and the machine dates to 2012.
Haha. First time I had to watch a washing machine instruction video too. I honestly thought my new washer was defective when I heard and saw it operate. The one I replaced was 25 year old Whirlpool and was loud, also slightly shook the walls and floors while on spin cycle.😂😂 Yes, it had passed its prime years ago but cleaned clothes like a mofo for over 2 decades. I just wanted to know if laundry detergent is actually supposed to be poured in or if you’re suppose to pour it in the top of the agitator lol tik tok has me questioning everything

I bought one of these in August. It never adds more than 5/6 inches of water in the wash cycle. I have to wash my king-size sheets one at a time. I am 100% dissatisfied with this washer. Note: I have found if I add a gallon or so of water on top of the load before I start the wash cycle it will add enough water of agitate the load. I wish I had my 30 year old Kenmore back.
I have an auto sensing Amana I absolutely hate it.. It's pretty bad when you have to have a bucket to add water to your washing machine just so just so the clothes are covered with water.. If they're not covered with water then they don't agitate and 8 and some of the clothes just sit there on top. Just waiting for a recall to get rid of this stupid thing.
Less water? It doesn't make much sense because if you try to wash a heavy load of clothes you still need a certain amount of water and there is no way to diminish it to do it right. You can use less water to flush a toilet, to wash your car but your clothes are different. They need to be submerged in order to get properly washed.
Lol so apparently I've loading my washer wrong. I always select my cycle settings and press start. The thing supposedly senses and begins filling with water while I'm putting my clothes in. Like another user has said, I don't have time for the machine to fiddle fart around. Just wash my damn clothes already!
When I pour the detergent in the wash basket it disappears down through the holes. Is that ok? Hope it doesn’t mean my clothes will get washed without detergent.
It doesn't mean the detergent is gone. The drum/inner tub is in an outer tub. When water enters the drum, it goes to the outer tub, therefore, the water mixes the detergent.
So, don’t put detergent on top of the clothes to prevent staining them, but put the detergent in first without any water, then put clothes on top of it? How’s that any better!?
@@August-uf4ojo does water come up through the bottom holes in the tub? If not, then you'd just end up getting all the detergent on the clothes at the bottom. Not any different.
No, it goes thru a fill and spin period to determine how much water to add. I've owned a Whirlpool Cabrio washer now for nearly 2 years. It is a great washer.
the out of balance occurs in all of these new top loaders... including the ones with the propeller... (no agitator) which damages the machine..either go with a front loader or stay with the old type agitator machine that spins about 700mph

Dear MrFreddy2189, We manufacture several different models with various features and designs in trying to provide washers that not only meet increasing government restrictions on energy usage but will be versatile in meeting the needs of most of our users while still providing the best performance in the industry. We regret if some operating characteristic or feature is unsatisfactory, and we apologize for any inconvenience this concern has caused you.
My parents bought a Kenmore in about 2010 that was this new belt drive style. After 2.5 years they had to spend over $300 including the service call to replace the mother board which lasted for about a year before dying again. This machine was at their summer home so was only used 6 months a year by two retired people. When it died the second time they loaded it up and took it to the dump then went to Home Depot and bought a Hotpoint with an electromechanical timer and no computer to die. My mother loves it, she hated the Kenmore almost from day one. Personally I'll stick with my 1978 Maytag .
Hi Helen. The washer will detect an unbalanced load before filling. Once the load is determined to be balanced, it will begin filling with water based on the cycle you have selected. If you are interested in a certain model, please let us know so that we may ensure it has the features you are interested in. Thank you, Amber
@kirbyyasha Some of our new washers do lock the lid down as a safety precaution. If you'd like to see it going through a spin cycle we'd recommend purchasing one with a transparent lid. Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.
no its not for safety !! its called money cos those goofy lock stubs break and so does the digital goofy buttons if u call buttons ! one little thing blows u gotta put it in the dump and buy another crappy one !!!!!! its called stock market !!! new to you and many others is it ?????
Does this agitation process really wash clothes properly? For a long time I have been washing with one of these but i never seen the way it actually washes. Today I saw it for the first time and I wondered if my machine was broken or what but I came here and saw that your machine does the same. It just makes me wonder if this really washes clothes properly or not
In the pursuit of saving water above all else, the EPA has imposed these standards on the newer consumer level laundry equipment. These newer machines in reality save nothing in environmental impact because of lack of reliability. Control boards failing is the number one reason these newer machines are thrown away before their time. Energy usage is higher overall because of longer run times to achieve the level of clean people expect as well. If you have one of these machines, make sure you plug it into a good surge protector to protect your investment.
I have a question how long does a cycle take? I have looked through my user guide and I can't get an answer. Sometimes a load will take two hours or more. We are calling a repair man out tomorrow. Do you think I should invest in a new washer. I hate these new computer washer mashines the old washer machines worked forever. This one has been a pain .
Buy a good old used Washer from a local dealer! It will last longer! And yes,a normal cycle time can be up to 1hour and 20 minutes plus with all the pausing and sensing!!
To anyone using any of these machines: Do not overload your washer. Overloading can cause poor cleaning. Avoid washing a single item unless it is a large bulky item as it may become unbalanced and the cycle not finish.
Great vid Whirlpool!! Love the new "belt-drive" washers!! Very much improved over the old direct drives! They are a joy to sell as well. Thankyou for such a AWESOME product!
Thank you. Just bought new top load washer, was not present at installation, so I was unsure of where the detergent goes. Annual was not helpful. This video helped alot.
I simply don't want a washer that functions like that....period! My current machine is 52 years old and still functioning well. I will keep it as long as possible and then buy on old, traditional top loader on Craigs List or elsewhere.
Thats what I am talking about, the old washers have motors built like a tank. I will NEVER fall into the Energy Efficient scam. Old school washers in the house!
Exactly! And remember, almost nothing goes wrong with those machines that can't be fixed by the homeowner. With simple care, you'll get 50 years or more of good service from yours as I did from mine.
@radha bhattu and me have the same washer because we are in the same house, our washer to be exact is from 1991 and has been working for 25 years (we had it since 1991)
Wow I've never known the difference between fabric softener and detergent until now. I've always put the detergent into the agitator part where the softener goes and not inside the actual basket where the clothes are.
Yes, Colored Detergent does the same thing . We have a centennial which is a newer model without an agitator. For a normal load it fills up with about four inches of water not enough to submerge or suspend the cloths. So any stains on them or detergent is not gonna get removed because they will not be circulated. Only the stuff that's in the water gets cleaned.
This is the exact washer in my new building I moved to and it just looked like a giant dinosaur I was so confused on how to use it even though I’ve washed my clothes with many other washers in the past lol thank you for the video
TheToploaderwasher, This particular machine is a belt driven machine. We do still manufacture some models that are direct drives though to answer your question. Please let me know if you have any other questions you may have regarding our washers. Sincerely, Kyle
@@pressure1682 I have a Whirlpool I bought new 20 years ago that still works perfectly. When it wears out I'll be buying a Speed Queen TC5 because they somehow managed to get away with producing it as an old school washer with agitator that fills completely and typically lasts about 25 years, just like the my old Whirlpool.
@@Rebel9668 see I have a ge washer right now, and it's really good, there's nothing really wrong with it besides the wash selector dial, the piece of plastic on the inside broke, I've had it for 8 years and have had no problems, it probably could last for around 5-10 more years
My mom gave me her 2003 whirlpool gold series set. 2 sets later and repaired every 6 month. Mine are still going strong. Sure hers look fancy. But mine are in pristine condition nothing broken. And they really scrub and get the dirt out. I don’t need anything to be gentle on dirt. Especially on my kids clothes.
@@pressure1682 Happy for you, however that isn't the typical story I get from most folks I've talked to that have had HE washers. Aunt's, Cousin's that have them all say they don't get their clothes clean, they stink, don't use enough water, take forever to wash a load. You may be saving a little water, but if the machine has to run for over an hour to do a load of laundry vs my old washer that can do the same load AND get it clean in less than half an hour how is that new one using more electricity by running so much longer "high efficiency"? Last I checked where I live water is a lot cheaper than electricity. I'll go ahead and stick with my original plan.
I know this video is old but my household also has a Whirlpool HE top-load washing machine. Unlike this one, however, mine uses an impeller instead of an agitator. In addition, mine has a built-in detergent dispensing tray which the user pours the detergent into before starting the load. The advantage to the detergent dispensing tray when compared to the machine in this video is that inexperienced users don't have to worry about ruining their clothes by not adding detergent properly since the detergent dispenser on those kinds of machines are clearly marked. Also, because the clothes and detergent are loaded in separate sections of the machine before starting the cycle, loading my washer in general is a less messy process. Many HE impeller top load washing machines and HE front load washing machines of all brands come with build in detergent dispensing trays to add detergent to as far as I remember so I could never really understand why companies would design their high efficiency machines without the detergent tray as in this video. Clearly, Whirlpool's high-efficiency top load washers have improved since this video was first posted on UA-cam. That's only from my experience with the better technology though as I still had a traditional water-guzzling agitator washer (that was the previous washer that I had before my current one btw) back then and by the time my traditional agitator washer did stop working and I had to replace it, Whirlpool's improved versions were pretty much already out there for the most part. I can't speak on behalf of other people's experience.
I bought a Whirlpool washer, Model # 1CWTW4740YQ 8 cycle 2 speed top load washer that also has this start and stop button. Got all the necessary pipes attached and plugged it in. It does absolutely nothing! i hear the lid lock and 'fill' light is lit and it just sits there. after fiddling for a couple hours, it finally started filling with water. the different lights lit up showing that it was supposed to be washing, however it did not agitate or spin, the water just eventually drained out!
I've used every setting on this washer from normal all away around to deep water wash and it only fills water not even close to half way and I've recalibrated and did the lid up and down 6 times and it still does the same thing oh well to the dump it goes
"Combined action of the agitator and basket help make stronger action" You mean we're too cheap to include a tub brake so we make it sound like something cool.
Another benefit about the detergent dispenser is that when water enters it, it dilutes the detergent before adding it to the clothes while the basket rotates to cover all the clothes, which coats the clothes more evenly than just adding it directly to the tub without diluting it first as with an old fashioned agitator washer. Again, that's just my experience and I can't speak for everyone else.
@bennettjr461 It's not normal. I'm from Europe/Germany and our washers wash with very little water, but the rinse cycle is more generous with water and leaves after 2 cycles clean clothes
My new Whirlpool works just fine. However I did disconnect that stupid lid lock. As long as you put the heaviest items at the bottom of the tub and the lightest ones on the top and dont over load it it will do its thing. I never put detergent in the tub before starting the machine....I push the start button and it fills immediately. Then I let the stream from the fill disolve the detergent then shut the lid and walk away. I does take ten min longer but all in all I am happy with my machine.
All these new washers are a POS, they clog, overfill, and break all the time. I got a 1995 washer, only thing I have changed is the agitator dogs, easy to work, no torx screws, easy accessible to work and repair. I repeat, dont get ripped off, buy used old washers, the less fancy it is, the better.
@@eyescreamcake Nahhh, you can buy a new traditional style washer with an agitator that will fill completely still. Check out a Maytag Commercial washer, or a Speed Queen model TC5000WN. They're both built like tanks and the speed queen has a 5 year warranty with an expected lifespan of about 25 years.
@MrFreddy2189 I really don't know who these "many other people" are, but all of the ones I have sold these washers too love how they clean and plus there are many reviews out there by people who say these washer do a very effective job at cleaning.
I have the Amana version of this. I notice Whirlpool isn't offering a traditional style too load washer no longer. Why ? Those wash plate washers are an absolute joke and the ones with a fake dual action agitator. Whirlpool needs to keep making classic washers . Don't mess with what always worked .
You'll notice that the manufacturers do not post any videos of the new machines actually working. The clothing movement is so inferior to the old Direct Drive units from twenty or thirty years ago. There are videos of those STILL WORKING! The Agitation function of the new machines is only demonstrated by animations on the promotional videos.
@@pipingdogtooth I have many videos of my Amana and it's wash action. They aren't bad for what they are. I had a few direct drives over the years and they were great machines. I have to say though I do like the longer slower stroke of these new machines and they do need the dual action agitator for the best turnover.
So here again, you can see or learn of decreased quality with their machines. After spin cycle the tub takes up to two minutes to stop spinning. (Frown) Say What? Their older washers stopped spinning almost immediately cause they had brakes. Also they got rid of direct drive cause it's more expensive to produce and too reliable. I recommend that anyone in the market for a new washer, do thorough research, cause things have changed dramatically across the board.
right on the money !!! if u can get a good working vintage machine grab it !!!! grab 2 if u have the room and live comfortably for a while cos the new machines gouge your pockets and quality sucks !!!!!!!!!!
yh old TL,S use the agiter to swish the clothes around and the high water level damps the clothes down so they can be swished and washed, the new ones use barely any water so they dont damp down and the agitater just rips the clothes
Kyle, why couldn't Whirlpool leave the direct drive machine alone? Why did they have to replace it with this machine? I love Whirlpool products. I'd hate to see them go belly up. I hate GE. exept for whirlpool, they're the only american appliance company left. I'd hate to see GE be the only one left. I bought my mom a Whirlpool solid state washer. It depends on the softener. Some are so concentrated that you need to dilute them while some are just ok and don't need to dilute
All it needs is a more servere agitador, like the old Kenmore washers from the 70's-90's.

Ya, think of how that hardly used machine clogged up the land fill. Is that a plus for the environment? NOT!

tallboyyyy If you have a 78 Maytag, but up some spare parts while you can, especially the tub bearing and stem seal kits!
you could of saved the agitator for me on that kenmore
I remember the Hotpoint was replaced with a 2001 Whirlpool Direct Drive machine. The Whirlpool unit is way better than the Kenmore and the Hotpoint.
Hi Helen. The washer will detect an unbalanced load before filling. Once the load is determined to be balanced, it will begin filling with water based on the cycle you have selected. If you are interested in a certain model, please let us know so that we may ensure it has the features you are interested in. Thank you, Amber
@kirbyyasha
Some of our new washers do lock the lid down as a safety precaution.
This is a pretty good video considering it was uploaded almost a decade ago
It's helpful this video 🖤💕
When using fabric softener, you will also need to select the Fabric Softener switch to ensure dispensing
Does this agitation process really wash clothes properly? For a long time I have been washing with one of these but i never seen the way it actually washes. Today I saw it for the first time and I wondered if my machine was broken or what but I came here and saw that your machine does the same. It just makes me wonder if this really washes clothes properly or not
How can I make my washing machine wash with a lead open?
Look on craigslist for a used older washer. You can also find a dealer who sells used machines, which are refurbished and resold.
Buy a good old used Washer from a local dealer! It will last longer! And yes,a normal cycle time can be up to 1hour and 20 minutes plus with all the pausing and sensing!!
Go get a washer from the 90’s on craigslist
To anyone using any of these machines: Do not overload your washer. Overloading can cause poor cleaning. Avoid washing a single item unless it is a large bulky item as it may become unbalanced and the cycle not finish.
and this washer was way overloaded
@@DanWebster That's why I'm careful loading a washer. If I put too much laundry in there, I'll take some out, and save it for the next load.
Great vid Whirlpool!! Love the new "belt-drive" washers!! Very much improved over the old direct drives! They are a joy to sell as well. Thankyou for such a AWESOME product!
I wish they were more durable and reliable though
Old school washers in the house!
wholeNwon
Your 52 year old wash is better for the landfills.
I have a excellent 1990's Kenmore Elite washer, I would NEVER give it up for this dumbass HE washer
🤣🤣🤣
Does putting the detergent on top of the clothes really stain them?
Yes, Colored Detergent does the same thing . We have a centennial which is a newer model without an agitator. For a normal load it fills up with about four inches of water not enough to submerge or suspend the cloths. So any stains on them or detergent is not gonna get removed because they will not be circulated. Only the stuff that's in the water gets cleaned.
Boomer: New washers are just as sensitive as the new generation lol
Lmao 😂 beat comment ive read
Does that mean they come wrapped in cotton wool? Haha 😂
@@lmal8207 I'm gad to make your day!

thank you for this video. all I needed to know : )
This is the exact washer in my new building I moved to and it just looked like a giant dinosaur I was so confused on how to use it even though I’ve washed my clothes with many other washers in the past lol thank you for the video
@radha bhattu and me have a 1990s kenmore elite washer, which is better an HE washer or our washer?
TheToploaderwasher,
This particular machine is a belt driven machine. We do still manufacture some models that are direct drives though to answer your question. Please let me know if you have any other questions you may have regarding our washers.
Sincerely,
Kyle
this is a maytag? thats weird, Maytag washers dont usually have these kind of agitators in drums in them
That's because whirlpool bought maytag in 2006
I never used this type of agitator before. How do they perform when compared to normal ones?
+Tristris 389 my 1991 kenmore elite direct drive is better than these he washers
THANK YOU lol i use to put fabric softner on top of my cloths and really messed all of them up
Will only buy a Speed Queen or a used washer made before 2000.
nice information video! thanks!
Thanks For Helping & Showing Us How To Do It!
i ahve a whirlpool washer and dryer for 3 yrs they have been very good
Lmao me buying a 1970s whirlpool and having it last longer than my moms “HE” washer. BTW I bought mine before her
See I currently have an he washer, and it still works perfectly coming up on ten years, the only problem is a tiny little plastic piece that broke 😂
This washer is McMansion grade quality.
Whirlpool machine! Nice!
When did the liquid detergent used? It wasn’t used till drain cycle but all were gone before rinse…
Do you manufacture machines with see through lids?
So.. what happened to the Fabric Softner?? It just Vanished
Thank you for this video 🙏🏿
and the water temperature appropriate for the items in the load.
How long will it pause before rinse?
In the background, I hear beeps of the other washer
I think the consensus is that the new washing technology SUCKS!
"Combined action of the agitator and basket help make stronger action"
You mean we're too cheap to include a tub brake so we make it sound like something cool.
At first I thought the same, but believe it or not it's true
@@ERMD_TWL no it’s not
They're too cheap! It's all about money!
What is the name of that washer?
@EmersonCollie Cool deal, the video is titled Whirlpool DIrect Drive vs. New Belt Drive.
If you wish to use fabric softener, add the measured amount into the fabric softener dispenser
Welcome to capitalism! Enjoy your stay...
@@eyescreamcake Nahhh, you can buy a new traditional style washer with an agitator that will fill completely still. Check out a Maytag Commercial washer, or a Speed Queen model TC5000WN. They're both built like tanks and the speed queen has a 5 year warranty with an expected lifespan of about 25 years.
im proud of my kenmore 80 series from 1999
i never even had to replace it
70 series Kenmore and same no isssues dryer works fine also.... GO TEAM OLD SCHOOL !!
why do i find this entertaining
@MrFreddy2189 I really don't know who these "many other people" are, but all of the ones I have sold these washers too love how they clean and plus there are many reviews out there by people who say these washer do a very effective job at cleaning.
As much as I loved the dd washers these have better wash action as far as I'm concerned .
Took almost 24 hours to lock the doors?
Thank God for my twin tub 🙃
So clothes stay in the same position how is that cleanning anything?
The biggest mistake in washer history was born.
What is bad?
@@katitobyt The load sensor and these things don't last.
Always set the water level to "large" or your clothes will come out dirty and ripped to shreds. "He" low water is just a shovel with a rope handle.
yh old TL,S use the agiter to swish the clothes around and the high water level damps the clothes down so they can be swished and washed, the new ones use barely any water so they dont damp down and the agitater just rips the clothes
These junkers don't give you a agitated deep rinse OR Spin spray rinse either!
You never added detergent.
She had it for 15 years and only needed a drive coupler replaced. My aunt's Profile? Motor, clutch and pump motor in 10 years.
If mine actually moved the clothes like it claims it might work. Overloading and my clothes still never change positions
how to connect it to water supply and waste?
What is the little hole at the top side?!
Softener
It is important to understand that each cycle has been designed to optimally clean specific load types
That’s true
